[아츠앤컬쳐] 크로아티아의 수도인 자그레브 중심에 위치한 즈린예바츠 zrinjevac 공원을 따라 산책하면서 필자는 그간 건축도로서 꿈꿔왔던 19 세기 중반 유럽 도시계획 개념을 직접 경험하는 기회를 가지게 되었다.

자그레브는 10세기에 처음으로 도시로 언급되었고 1242년에 왕립 자유도시 지위를 얻었으며, 현대적인 발전은 1880년 강력한 지진 피해를 입은 이후 시작되었다. 이 커다란 재앙으로 오히려 자그레브는 도시 재건의 기회를 얻게 되었다. 우선 밀라노 레누치 Milano Lenuci가 디자인한 말굽 형태를 기반으로 8개의 공원을 도시 광장을 중심으로 연결하고 이를 네오르네상스와 아르누보 건축물들이 둘러싸도록 계획하였다. 또한 분수와 기념물, 꽃과 조각 정원들로 꾸며진 긴 산책로가 도시 중심부를 관통하여 시민들에게 휴식처를 제공하도록 하였다.

140년 후인 2020년 3월에 자그레브는 강력한 지진으로 다시 타격을 입었다. 대부분의 도시 박물관과 갤러리들이 파손되었으며 크로아티아 과학예술아카데미의 웅장한 건물도 피해를 입었다. 과학, 예술 및 문학의 아이콘으로 꼽히는 이 기관은 당시의 위대한 지식인이었던 요십 유라이 스트로스마이어 Josip Juraj Strossmayer 주교가 1861년에 설립하였다. 그는 “교육을 통한 자유”를 모토로 삼아 교육, 과학, 문화 및 예술을 증진하기 위해 평생을 헌신한 위대한 인본주의자이자 비전가였다.

2019년 크로아티아 과학예술아카데미의 회장인 벨리미르 네이드하르트 Dr. Velimir Neidhardt 박사를 만났는데, 우리 한국문화사절단이 그의 회장 임기에서 첫 번째 외국인 손님이 되어 환대를 받았던 기억이 난다. 그의 박학다식함과 양국간의 교류에 대한 열정에 우리 사절단은 큰 감동을 받았다. 그 또한 자그레브 공항을 비롯해 수많은 건축물을 디자인한 유명한 건축가로서 3월에 이은 12월의 두 번째 지진으로 이 아카데미의 아름다운 네오르네상스 건물과 자그레브시가 입은 피해에 얼마나 슬퍼했을지 가히 짐작이 간다. 한국 건축사협회 및 한국 건축 관련 전문가들도 크로아티아 지진에 관하여 관심을 가지고 함께 협력을 구축하고자 노력해주어 감사함을 표하고 싶다.

2019년 여름, 자그레브 한달 살기를 하며 사람과 자연 중심으로 이루어진 유럽도시가 얼마나 정감있는지 새삼 느끼게 되었다. 지금은 고인이 되었지만 유럽에서 도시계획을 공부하고 알칸소 주 수도 리틀락 다운타운을 미국 전형의 할렘가에서 인간 중심 타운으로 개발하여 인간의 삶의 가치를 추구하고자 노력했던 나의 남편 릭 Rick Redden의 도시건축 환경 이념과도 일맥상통한 것이었다. 그가 개발한 다운타운과 리틀락의 명소 클린턴도서관은 함께 어우러져 릭의 건축철학의 휼륭한 예로 명시되곤 한다.

어쩌면 나는 자연과 기술의 조화와 아름다움을 기반으로 한 인간 중심의 도시로 정의되는 유토피아적 몽상가일지도 모른다. 그러나 나와 뜻을 함께 나눌 수 있는 분들이 있다면 자그레브를 방문해 다양성과 개방성이 인정되는 이 친인간형 도시에서 잊지 못할 경험을 할 수 있기를 권유한다.

Zagreb An urban-planning masterpiece

Strolling around Zrinjevac Park in the very center of Zagreb, I marveled at the architectural urban masterpiece of Croatia’s capital city, a unique concept of mid-19th century design of an elegant and human-centric city.

Central Zagreb is a horseshoe-shaped urban area with beautiful parks and squares designed by Milan Lenuci. This unique human-oriented urban planning and landscape
architecture has profiled Zagreb as one of the most attractive cities in Europe.

Zagreb was first mentioned as a city in the 10th century, and in 1242 the city received the Royal Free City status. However, it’s modern development actually started after a devastating earthquake in 1880. The tragedy initiated the new urban planning that resulted in the eight connected parks and city squares filled with fountains and gardens, exclusive promenades stretching throughout the center of the city, and circled by neo-renaissance and art-nouveau architecture palaces.

In late March of last year, Zagreb was once again hit by a devastating earthquake and majority of the city museums and galleries were among the damaged buildings. Croatian Academy of Science and Arts, the icon of science, arts and literature was founded in 1861 by the bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer. His main motto was: To freedom through education, and he dedicated his life to promoting education, science, culture, and the arts. He was indeed an apostle of peace, ecumenist for tolerance and cooperation.

Zagreb’s last two earthquakes, one in late March and one in late December of last year, have devastated many 19th century architectural masterpieces in Zagreb, the beautiful neo-renaissance palace of the Croatian Academy of Science and Arts being only one of the many unfortunate buildings.

I recently met the President of the Croatian Academy of Science and Arts, Dr. Velimir Neidhart, who kindly received the Korean cultural delegation as the first foreign guests in his presidential mandate and he has impressed all of us with his encyclopaedic knowledge and his enthusiasm for a Croatian-Korean cooperation. He is a famous architect with a number of masterpieces designed in the city of Zagreb and I can only imagine how sad he must have been witnessing the destruction that befell his beautiful, but wounded city after the recent earthquake in late December.

My sincerest hope is that the Korean Architect Society and culture-and-arts-minded people in Korea recognize this moment to help Croatian colleagues and establish a partnership and cooperation.

Looking at this really human-centred city, I reflected on how architecture and urban planning today has sadly become predominantly determined by commercial and profit-making drive. However, as an architect myself, it was always my main motto to focus on centering designs around people and their experiences.

I have absorbed this human-urban ideology from my late husband Rick, the recognized American architect of the human-faced urban development in his native city of Little Rock in Arkansas, the famous Clinton Library in Little Rock being an excellent example of this architecture philosophy.

Maybe I am just a dreamer of urban utopianism – defined by human-centric
urban areas but for those like-minded individuals who share in this wistful
dreaming, I urge you to visit Zagreb for an unforgettable experience in a city that
just fits this philosophy.
