몬탈치노와 발도르치아 Montalcino and Val d’Orcia

이탈리아의 9월은 포도 수확의 달이다. 포도로부터 생산되는 공식 이탈리아 와인 품종은 무려 350여 종이나 된다. 그 중에서도 이른바 ‘천국의 와인’이라 불리는 ‘브루넬로 디 몬탈치노’는 토스카나 주의 몬탈치노 마을의 작품이다. 보통 이탈리아 방문의 최적기는 여름이지만 특별히 방문하는 곳이 토스카나라면 가을을 추천한다. 가을은 모든 나라에서 가장 일반적인 식량과 음료가 많이 생산되는 수확기다. 그 중 포도 수확의 정확한 날짜를 맞추기란 불가능한데, 그것은 수확이 전년도의 날씨에 영향을 받기 때문이며, 대략 9월~10월 중순 사이에 이루어진다.

몬탈치노는 이탈리아 중부 시에나 남쪽의 언덕 꼭대기에 중세의 성과 요새로 둘러싸인 전형적인 동화 마을로, 숨 막히게 아름다운 발도르치아 자연공원 안에 자리하며, 귀중한 브루넬로 적포도주의 생산지로 전 세계에 명성이 높다.

발도르치아는 이탈리아 내에서도 절대적인 아름다운 풍광으로 매우 독특하다. 중세의 성, 구부러진 협곡, 고대의 마을, 멋진 농장, 외딴 농지, 편백나무가 늘어선 길, 엄청난 포도원과 올리브 숲, 곡식과 해바라기로 뒤덮인 황금 들판!

그러나 이것은 발도르치아의 환상적이고 조화로운 풍경의 일부에 지나지 않는다. 오르치아강의 이름을 딴 이 풍요로운 푸른 계곡은 시에나와 그로쎄토 사이로 뻗은 남부 토스카나 지역으로 전체가 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정되어 있다.

몬탈치노는 매우 긴 역사를 가지고 있다. 몬탈치노 언덕은 고대 에트루리아 시대 이래로 정착촌이었다. 마을 이름은 한때 이곳을 뒤덮었던 다양한 참나무에서 유래한다. 몬탈치노에는 단순히 와인뿐만 아니라 보물급 예술품이 아주 많다. 역사적 중심지는 요새인데 시에나의 지배하에 몬탈치노의 통행을 기념하기 위해 1361년에 강력하고 당당한 외양으로 건설되었다. 요새의 성벽에서 바라보면 아미아타산을 향해 크레타를 건너 시에나로, 발도르치아와 마렘마 언덕을 가로지르며 장관이 펼쳐진다.

요새 외에도 미술과 박물관 역사에 매우 중요한 교회들이 있다. 돌로 포장된 몬탈치노의 거리는 정말 환상적이며, 매혹적인 예술 공예품 가게, 카페, 레스토랑, 와인바로 이루어진 미로는 거닐기에도 좋다. 요새 안에는 ‘에노테카 라 포르테자’(와인가게와 와인바)가 있는데, 몬탈치노를 전 세계적으로 유명하게 만든 DOCG 와인 브루넬로의 빈티지 잔을 음미하기에 이상적이다. 이 외에도 전형적인 맛을 느껴볼 수 있는 수많은 와인바와 레스토랑이 있다. 수확기에는 맛집마다 새로 수확한 식재료임을 강조하며 특선 요리를 내놓는다.

유명한 요리로 포르치니 리조또, 호박 라비올리, 파스타 알 타르투포와 멧돼지 요리 또는 판차넬라 발도르치아 여름 샐러드가 있다. 또한, 특별히 추천할 만한 별미에 파스타 피치가 있는데, 원래는 농가에서 단순히 올리브유, 소금, 밀가루만으로 만드는 것이다. 손으로 말아 두툼한 스파게티처럼 투박해 보이는데, 수렵육, 라구 소스, 버섯 소스, 치즈 소스 등과 같이 먹는다.

Montalcino and Val d’Orcia, culture, food and wine paradise

Now is September, in Italy is the month of grape harvest. Wine comes from grapes and in Italy are about 350 official Italian wine varieties. Today we speak about one special area Montalcino and its area, in Tuscany, the city of Brunello wine, a paardise of wine.

Summer is traditionally the most popular time to visit Italy, but we’re here to make an argument in favor of autumn in Tuscany. Autumn means harvest time when many of the country’s most popular food and drinks are produced for the rest of the year. It’s
not possible to state an exact date for the vendemmia, the harvest; it depends on what the weather has been for the previous year. But, generally, the grape harvest in Tuscany takes place between September to mid October.

Montalcino is a hill town in the province of Siena Tuscany central Italy. To the south of Siena is a classic fairytale hilltop town, set within a full circle of fortified walls and watched over by a mighty castle of medieval perfection. Montalcino, is a beautiful village immersed in the breathtaking Val d’Orcia Natural Park, renowned all over the world for the production of its precious Brunello red wine. Val d’Orcia is unique in Italy. The beautiful landscape is the absolute protagonist. Medieval castles, sinuous gills, ancient villages, gorgeous farmhouses, isolated homesteads, roads lined with cypress trees, fabulous vineyards and olive groves and golden fields of grain and sunflowers: these are just some of the elements that form the fantastic and harmonious landscapes of the Val d'Orcia. This rich green valley, which encompasses the Orcia river and where it derives its name, is in southern Tuscany, stretching between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto. The entire area is protected as a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

Montalcino has very long history. The hill upon which Montalcinosits has probably been settled since Etruscan times. The town takes its name from a variety of oak tree that once covered the terrain. Montalcino is not just wine, it is also very rich in artistic treasures. The historical center is dominated by the mighty and imposing Rocca or fortress built in 1361 to mark the passage of Montalcino under the domination of Siena. The views from its ramparts are spectacular, stretching towards Monte Amiata, across the Crete to Siena, and across all of the Valdorcia and the hills of Maremma. Beside the Rocca we can visit also few churches very important for the history of art and the museum.

The streets of Montalcino with their stone pavements are truly enchanting and the village is a wonderful place to stroll around among the labyrinth of charming arts and crafts shops, cafes, restaurants and wine bars. Inside the Rocca there is also the Enoteca la Fortezza (wine shop and wine bar), which is ideal for savoring glasses of Brunellso ’vintage, the DOCG wine that has made Montalcino popular throughout the world. In the Montalcino area are numerous wine bars and restaurants where you can taste the typical products. During the harvest season, restaurants will offer specialties that highlight the newly harvested foods. A few famous plates we’d recommend: porcini risotto, pumpkin ravioli, pasta al tartufo (truffle) and dishes with wild boar or Panzanella typical Val D’orcia summer salad.

 A special food is Pici a variety of Italian pasta made with wheat flour and water. Originally, it was prepared by farmers whose pantries were often filled only with olive oil, salt, and wheat flour. The pasta is rolled by hand and looks robust, like thick spaghetti. It is recommended to pair pici with game meat, ragus, mushroom sauces, or cheese sauces.
