세계적인 호박의 수도, 그다인스크

[아츠앤컬쳐] 그다인스크(Gdańsk)는 모든 호박 교역로의 중심으로, 호박 공예의 유서 깊은 전통이 도시의 독특한 경관과 문화의 일부로서 명성을 이어가고 있는 도시다. 구시가지 중심의 호박박물관에서는 최고(最古)로 고고학적 의미를 지닌 호박 표본과경이로운 호박 공예품, 천연 호박, 그리고 전 세계 주요 보석 예술가들의 작품들을 만나볼 수 있다.

가장 놀라운 전시품 중에는 이 지역 해변에서 발견된 것으로 호박 속에 선사시대 도마뱀이 보존된 것이 있다. 마리아츠카 거리에는 많은 가게와 갤러리, 현대 호박 예술가들의 스튜디오가 있고, 도시 전역에 발트해산 호박을 닮은 독특한 축구 경기장을 비롯하여 호박 문화를 모티브로 삼은 것들이 많다.

또한 세계적으로 유명한 발트해 산(産) 호박보석박람회인 그다인스크국제호박박람회 <엠버리프AMBERIF>가 개최된다. 일 년에 두 차례, 3월과 8~9월에 전시회를 준비하는 회사와 바이어들이 전 세계에서 모여들어 독특한 장신구의 좋은 품질과 양을 확보하기 위해 경쟁한다.

이 박람회는 또한 비즈니스, 과학, 예술 분야의 전문가들의 회의와 심포지엄을 위한 장소이며, 국제호박예술경연대회 <엠버리프 디자인 어워드>가 열리는 문화의 장으로, 2022년에는 스페인의 예술가 엠마 카라우 부에노가 대상을 탔다.

앰버리프 셀렉션은 박람회 출품자들을 대상으로 하는 디자인 대회이며, 독특한 디자인과 더불어 장인정신이 묻어나는 최상급 품질의 장신구를 가려내는 것을 목표로 한다. 올해에 우승한 S&A 쥬얼리 디자인은 호박 장신구와 조각품들에 꾸준한 인기가 있는 아시아에 잘 알려진 업체다.

예로부터 발트해 산(産) 호박은 북유럽에서 귀중한 원자재를 찾기 위해 호박 교역로를 만든 고대 로마인들이 귀하게 여기던 보석이었다. 호박은 그리스 신화를 포함하여 많은 전설과 문헌에서 언급된다. 18세기 바로크 시대는 호박 공예의 발전에 중요한시기였는데, 장신구뿐만이 아니라 금고, 가구, 접시, 개인 액세서리와 건축 재료에까지 호박이 쓰였다. 많은 사람들이 호박에 미신적이거나 의학적인 효과가 있다고 믿으며, 특히나 중국에서는 종종 호박이 부적으로 여겨진다. 호박이 정전기를 일으키는 특성이 있어 그렇게 여겨진 것이라 생각된다.

심지어 호박의 고대 그리스어 이름은 ‘Elektronos’이다. 호박을 직물에 문지르면 호박 원석이 정전기를 일으켜 작은 종이 조각들을 끌어당긴다. 호박을 가열하면 아로마 향이 나며, 공기를 이온화하는 이로운 효과도 있다. 호박은 4천만 년 전의 선사시대 침엽수의 송진이 천연 화석이 된 것이기 때문이다.

호박에 대한 이 짧은 기사와 호박의 상징성, 유구한 역사가 초대장이 되어 호박의 트렌드가 탄생하고 있는 그다인스크를 방문해 보시길 바란다. 호박의 가치를 감상하고 그 경이로움을 체험할 수 있는 최고의 장소는 국제 호박-액세서리 박람회인 <엠버리프>로, 올해는 9월 1일~3일에, 그리고 이듬해에는 3월 22일~25일에 개최된다.

Gdańsk is the World Capital of Amber!

It is in Gdańsk that all amber roads intersect, it is also here the historical tradition of amber crafting continues as part of the unique atmosphere of the city and its material culture. The heart of Gdańsk’s Old Town proudly features the Museum of Amber with the oldest examples of archaeological finds, spectacular artefacts of amber craft, natural inclusions and a thorough selection of works by leading jewellery artists from around the world.

One of the most stunning exhibits is a prehistoric lizard, embedded in amber and found on one of the local beaches. Nearby Mariacka (St Mary’s) Street has many stores, galleries and studios of contemporary amber artists and, all over the city, there are multiple references to its amber heritage, including a unique football stadium that looks like a piece of Baltic amber.

AMBERIF, the world’s principal Baltic amber jewellery fair, is held here as well. Twice a year, in March and in late August/early September, exhibitors and buyers from all over the world meet at Gdańsk’s state-of-the-art Amber Expo exhibition centre to look for unique jewellery, which is available only then in such a massive selection and in top quality. This specialised trade show is also an annual opportunity for influential meetings among experts from many areas of business, science and art, a venue for conferences, symposia and cultural events, with AMBERIF DESIGN AWARD—the international jewellery art competition—standing out in particular.

In 2022, the Spanish artist Emma Carrau Bueno won the prestigious ADA Grand Prize. AMBERIF SELECTION is a parallel design competition addressed to AMBERIF exhibitors. Its purpose is to select jewellery products of exceptional design and supreme quality of workmanship. This year’s winner, S&A Jewellery Design, is renowned in Asia, where amber jewellery and sculptural items made of this material continuously enjoy great popularity.

Baltic amber was already treasured by ancient Romans, who marked out amber roads in search of this valuable raw material in northern Europe. Amber is mentioned in many legends and literary sources, including Greek mythology. The 18th century Baroque era was an important period in the development of amber art, when not only amber jewellery was made but also amber coffers, furniture, dishes, personal accessories and even architectural details. Many people believe amber to have magical and medicinal properties and it is often regarded, especially in China, as an amulet and a personal talisman.

Perhaps this is influenced by its unique feature, namely its electrostatic properties (amber’s ancient Greek name is elektronos). When rubbed against a fabric, raw amber charges up and attracts small pieces of paper; when heated, it gives off an aromatic scent and ionises the air with beneficial effect—after all, it is a natural fossilised resin of prehistoric conifers from forty million years ago.
