자다르, 웅장한 중세 건축물의 살아있는 교과서

[아츠앤컬쳐] 도시 자다르는 내가 가장 좋아하는 크로아티아 도시 중 하나로 수도 자그레브에서 차로 3시간 거리에 있다. 자다르시는 기원전 8세기부터 1세기 로마가 정복할 때까지 리부르니아 부족이 살았던 구 일리리아 정착지 이다사에 세워졌다. 로마인들은 아우구스투스 황제 시대에 전형적인 로마 도시를 건설했는데, 주요 광장에 포럼이 있고 견고한 요새로 둘러싸여 있다. 베네치아가 4세기 동안 통치했으며 중세시대에 자다르는 아드리아해 동쪽의 가장 강력한 요새였다.

로마 제국의 몰락과 르네상스의 시작 사이 중세 시대 교회들은 놀랍게도 지금까지 완벽히 보존되어 있다. 마을의 중심에는 로마의 전형적인 포럼이 있으며 초기 중세 성례식 건축 양식으로 9세기에 지어진 성 도나투스 교회에서는 클래식 음악 콘서트와 전시회가 열린다.

포럼에서 몇 걸음 떨어진 곳에 또 다른 아름다운 성 크리소고누스 성당은(크로아티아어로 Sv Krsevan)는 12세기에 로마 대성당으로 지어졌다. 세인트 메리 성당과 자다르 베네딕토회 수녀원은 1105년에 지어진 종탑과 함께 또 다른 유명한 성례전의 걸작으로 손꼽힌다.

마지막으로, 고딕 양식의 교회에서 고대 로마 시대까지 이어지는 독특한 건축 양식으로 12세기와 13세기에 지어진 성 아나스타샤의 자다르 대성당이 있다.

그러나 건축 애호가에게는 이 도시가 오래된 교회뿐만 아니라 고대 도시 형태를 볼 수 있는 특별한 기회가 된다. 자다르는 평평한 정사각형 땅이 바다 쪽으로 튀어나와 있으며 요새벽에 의해 둘러싸여 있고 주변의 여러 섬으로 보호되는 형식으로 아주 탁월한 위치에 건설되었다.

중세 거리의 연결망은 기하학적 대칭에 놓여 독특한 르네상스 광장으로 이어지는데 다섯 개의 우물 광장과 세 개의 우물 광장이 이 마을을 더욱 매력적으로 만든다. 우물은 1574년 오스만 제국의 빈번한 공격 중 자다르의 수비수에게 식수 공급 저수지로 건설되었다. 오늘날은 많은 연인들이 영원한 사랑과 행복을 기리며 마시는 상징적인 물로 낭만적인 곳으로 인기가 있다.

오늘날 관광객들은 우물 대신에 로컬 타베르나, 커피바 또는 펍으로 가니 자다르 역시 저녁 엔터테인먼트를 즐기도록 개발이 되어있다. 전통적인 클래식 음악을 좋아한다면 매일 저녁 도나터스 성당이나 로마 포럼에서 세계적으로 유명한 국제 음악가들의 공연을 즐길 수 있다. 포럼 주변 테라스에서 팝이나 록 음악을 위한 라이브 공연이 있고 수많은 고대 도시 지하에 아늑한 로컬 클럽들에서도 새로운 경험을 할 수 있을 것이다.

나는 나이트 클럽과 밤의 축제를 놓치긴 했지만, 건축가로서 자다르가 훌륭한 도보 건축 교과서이자 역사를 사랑하는 사람들을 위한 명장소라는 것을 확신한다. 자다르에 머무는 며칠 동안 나는 이 멋진 도시를 기억하기 위해 나만의 건축 스케치를 그리는 행복을 누릴 수 있었다.

Zadar, A walk through the living textbook with magnificent medieval architecture

Just three hours by car from the capital city of Zagreb is one of my favorite Croatian cities – Zadar. City of Zadar is founded at the former Illyrian settlement Idassa where the tribe Liburnians lived since the 8th century BC until the Roman conquest in the 1st century. Romans, during the time of emperor Augustus built a typical Roman town, with the Forum at the main square and encircled with the firm fortifications. During the Middle Ages, Zadar had an important role and Venice has ruled the city for four centuries and built the most powerful fortress on the Eastern side of Adriatic.

It is amazing to see so many completely preserved churches from the period of the Middle Ages, between the fall of the Roman Empire and the beginning of Renaissance. In the very center oft he town, there is the Roman antique Forum, and perfectly preserved Church of St Donatus built in the 9th Century in an early medieval sacral architectural style. Today, the church is a place of the classical music concerts and exhibitions.

There is another beautiful church just a few steps from the Forum – St Chrysogonus (Sv Krsevan in Croatian), built in 12th century as a large Romanic Basilica. St Mary Church and monastery of the Zadar Benedictine nuns are other distinguished sacral masterpieces, with the bell tower built in 1105. Finally, the Zadar Cathedral of St Anastasia, built in 12th and 13th Century with unique architecture style, drawn from Gothic churches to the Byzantine.

But architecture-lovers can easily find in Zadar much more than old churches. Zadar has excellent position at the flat squared peninsula, surrendered by fortification walls and protected from the sea by a range of close islands. A network of tiny cobblestone streets lies in a geometrical symmetry and lead to a unique renaissance square. – The Five-well Square and the Threewell square made this town additionally attractive. The wells were built in 1574 as a drinking water supply reservoirs to the defenders of Zadar, during the frequent attacks by the Ottomans. Today, the squares are well known place with more popular romantic dimension, with symbolic water that love couples drink together to assure that they love will live happily ever after .

Today, instead to the wells, people go to the excellent tavernas, coffee-bars, and local pubs. Zadar is an excellent place for the evening entertainment. If you like the traditional, classical music there is a wonderful choice of the world-renowned international musicians every evening at the St Donatus Church or at the Roman Forum. For those who prefer the pop or rock music, there are numerous terraces with live performances, or local cozy clubs located in the ancient town cellars.

I have to admit that I missed the challenge of the night clubs and evening funs, but as the architect myself, I found Zadar as the excellent walking architecture-textbook and really a place for history lovers. In the few days of my stay in Zadar, I made my own, architectural way of sketches to remember this wonderful town.
