마리아 스크워도프스카 퀴리 박물관

[아츠앤컬쳐] 마리아 스크워도프스카-퀴리 박물관은 노벨상을 2회 수상한 마리아 퀴리의 생가에 위치한다. 박물관은 마리아 퀴리의 어머니가 여학교를 운영했던 프레타거리 16번지의 18세기 아파트에 지었으며, 노벨상 수상자에게 헌정된 세계 유일의 전기 박물관이다.

이곳에서는 마리아 퀴리의 메모, 편지, 사진, 문서, 과학자의 개인물품과 가족 물건 등을 상설 전시하고 있다. 전시품에는 루드비카 니츠쇼바, 조피아 볼스카 그리고 알폰스 카르니와 같은 유명한 폴란드 예술가의 조각품들도 포함되어 있다. 전시실의 한 부분은 파리의 퀴리 실험실처럼 만들고 피에르 퀴리가 디자인한 측정기가 전시 중이며 노벨상 수상자를 기념하는 우표, 메달 그리고 지폐 등도 전시되어 있다.

마리아 스크워도프스카-퀴리의 개인 기념품 중 가장 특별한 관심을 받고 있는 것은 미국 폴란드여성협회에서 1921년에 그녀에게 수여한 가죽 핸드백이다. 협회 멤버들은 바르샤바의 방사선 실험실 과학자들을 위해 천 달러를 기부하기도 하였다. 노벨상 수상자의 개인 물품 외에도 상설 전시실에는 공문서와 브와디스와프 스크워도프스키의 금회중시계, 시집, 공책과 같은 가족 기념품들이 있다.

또한 마리아의 어머니인 마리안나 브로니스와바 스크워도프스카의 공책이 있는데, 여기에는 러시아의 폴란드 분할 시기에 독본의 하나인 니엠체비츠의 “역사의 노래”가 손으로 쓰여 있다. 방문객들이 가장 큰 관심을 보이는 것은 마리아 스크워도프스카-퀴리가 1929년 백악관을 방문했을 때 미국 대통령 허버트 후버로부터 받은 코끼리다. 당시 그녀가 방문한 주 목적은 바르샤바의 라듐 연구소를 위해 라듐 1g의 구매에 필요한 5만 달러를 모으기 위함이었다.

마리아 스크워도프스카-퀴리 박물관은 수도 바르샤바에서 문화 기관으로서 역할을 하고 있다. 이 박물관 건립 및 전시의 목적은 퀴리의 일생과 과학적 업적과 활동을 현대적으로 해석하고 전파함으로써 노벨상 수상자를 기념하고자 한다.

박물관은 과학자 퀴리와 그 가족에 관련하여 교육적이고 문화적인 프로젝트를 시행하고 있으며 수년 동안 ‘국제박물관의 밤’에 참여한 바 있다. 박물관은 문서 기록들을 보관하고 있을 뿐만 아니라 단기 전시회와 강좌를 기획하고, 저자와의 만남이나 예술 이벤트를 진행하고 있다. 또한 마리아 스크워도프스카-퀴리에 관련된 서적을 출판하고 기념품도 판매 중에 있다.

과학자 및 과학, 문화 분야에서 활동하는 여성을 위한 다양한 움직임이 박물관의 후원 하에 이루어졌다. 박물관은 현재까지도 마리아 스크워도프스카-퀴리의 친척들과 연락을 갖고 그들의 참여 하에 많은 모임을 개최하고 있다.

Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum in Warsaw

The Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum in Warsaw is located at the birthplace of two-time Nobel laureate. It is housed in the 18th-century tenement house at 16 Freta Street, where Maria's mother ran a girls' school.

It is the only biographical museum in the world devoted to the Nobel laureate. The permanent exhibition consists of a collection of notes and letters by Maria Skłodowska-Curie, as well as photographs, documents and personal items of the scientist and her family. The exhibits include sculptures by famous Polish artists, such as Ludwika Nitschowa, Zofia Wolska and Alfons Karny. A fragment of the exhibition was arranged as the Curies’ laboratory in Paris, where measuring instruments designed by Pierre Curie are presented.

Part of the exhibition commemorates Nobel Prize winners on stamps, medals and banknotes. Among the Maria Skłodowska-Curie's personal souvenirs collected at the Museum, a special attention deserves a leather handbag, offered to her in 1921 by the Association of Polish Women in America. Members of the association also donated a thousand dollars to the scientist for the Radiological Laboratory in Warsaw.

In addition to the personal items of the Nobel laureate, the permanent exhibition also presents archives and family souvenirs, such as Władysław Skłodowski's gold pocket watch or a notebook with his poems. The Museum's collection also includes the notebook of Maria's mother, Marianna Bronisława Skłodowska, with handwritten "Historical Songs" by J. U. Niemcewicz - a kind of Polish primer during the Russian Partition. An exhibit of great interest to visitors is an elephant from the President of the United States Herbert Hoover, which Maria Skłodowska-Curie received as a souvenir of her visit to the White House in 1929.

The main purpose of this visit was to collect money - $ 50,000 - for the purchase of a gram of radium for the emerging then the Radium Institute in Warsaw. The Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum in Warsaw is a cultural institution of the Capital City of Warsaw. Its mission is to commemorate the Nobel laureate by disseminating knowledge about her life, scientific activity and achievements in a friendly and modern way. The institution implements educational and cultural projects related to the scientist and her family.

For many years it has been a participant in the international Museum Night. It collects archival resources, organizes temporary exhibitions, lectures, meetings with authors and artistic events. The museum also publishes and sells books and souvenirs related to Maria Skłodowska-Curie. Various ventures dedicated to the scientist as well as to other women in science and culture are organized under the auspices of the museum. It maintains contact with relatives of Maria Skłodowska-Curie and organizes meetings with their participation.
