니에지차 지역의 두나예츠 성

[아츠앤컬쳐] 전원지대로 둘러싸인 니에지차 지역의 성은 폴란드의 가장 아름다운 명소 중 한 곳이며 타트라 산기슭의 고산 풍경을 특징으로 한다. 중세 시대 두나예츠강 유역에 지어져 지금은 스피시 지역의 일부이기도 한 이 성은, 과거 수세기 동안이나 헝가리 왕국의 스피시 주에 속해 있었다. 헝가리 두나예츠 성은 제1차 세계대전이 끝나고 1920년이 되어서야 주요 연합국 대사 회의의 결정에 따라 폴란드로 귀속되었다.

성은 그 역사도 파란만장하여 14세기부터 지금껏 소유자가 여러 번 바뀌어왔다. 수차례에 걸쳐 재건되고 확장되었을 뿐 아니라 반복적으로 파괴되고 약탈당하기도 했다. 하지만 완전히 폐허가 된 적은 없었다. 성 전체가 보다 균일한 외관을 갖출 수 있도록 해주는 현대화나 재건 과정 역시 일절 거치지 않았다.

성의 성벽은 수 세기에 걸쳐 점차적으로 높아지면서 독특하고 그림 같은 모습을 형성하게 되었다. 오늘날 성의 외관은 중세의 요새, 초기 근대 거물들의 거처, 귀족들의 여름 별장 등의 과정들을 거쳐오며 그로부터 영향받아 완성된 것이다.

니에지차 성 내 박물관은 1963년에 개관했다. 가장 높은 성과 중간 높이의 성은 내부 배치와 건물이 가진 건축학적 특징들을 그대로 보존한 채 박물관으로 개조되었다. 일반 역사실에서는 성 내부에서 고고학 작업을 하던 중에 발굴된 유적들을 선별하여 전시하고 있다.

니에지차 성이 특별한 곳이라는 사실에는 의심할 여지가 없다. 이는 매년 성을 방문하는 관광객들만의 의견이 아니다. ‘게니우스 로키’, 즉 유서 깊은 거주지의 수호 정신을 알게 되었던 과거 성의 거주자들도 이곳을 특별하게 여겼다. 또한 성 내 단지에는 두나예츠 성과 수목 관리인들의 산장, 마차 보관소가 있으며 성으로 가는 길 반대편에는 곡물 저장고와 세관이 있다.

The Dunajec Castle in Niedzica

The castle in Niedzica, with its surrounding countryside, is one of the most beautiful places in Poland and now a distinctive feature of the alpine landscape in the Polish Tatra foothills. Built in the Middle Ages on the banks of the Dunajec river, today it is part of Spisz, but in the past it belonged to Szepes County, a historical region, which for centuries was closely associated with the Kingdom of Hungary. It was not until the end of the First World War that the Hungarian Dunajec Castle became part of Poland, by virtue of a decision of the Conference of Ambassadors of the Principal Allied and Associated Powers of 1920.

The castle changed hands many times in its chequered history, which stretches back to the 14th century. It was rebuilt and extended on several occasions and was also repeatedly destroyed and plundered, but never fell into total ruin. Nor did it undergo complete reconstruction and modernization, which would have given the building a more uniform overall appearance.

The castle’s walls rose gradually over the centuries, creating an unique and picturesque whole. The mediaeval stronghold, the early modern seat of magnates, and an aristocratic summer residence, all these stages of its history left their mark on the appearance it has today.

The museum at Niedzica Castle opened in 1963. The interiors of the High and Middle Castles were adapted for use as a museum while preserving the historical layout and architectural character of the building. In the modest historic rooms, it was decided to display a selection of objects found during archaeological works carried out at the castle.

Without doubt, Niedzica Castle is a very special place. This is not only the opinion of the crowds of tourists who visit each year, but also that of the selected few who lived there and had the opportunity of becoming acquainted with the „genius loci” – or protective spirit – of this exceptional historic residence. The Niedzica Castle Complex consists of Dunajec Castle, the nearby Foresters’ Lodge, the Coach House, together with the Granary and the Customs’ House which are located on the other side of the road leading to the castle.
