알레시아 스카르소

[아츠앤컬쳐] 지난 8월 17일, 영화 <이탈로>를 관람하고 알레시아 스카르소(Alessia Scarso) 영화감독을 한남동 이탈리아문화원에서 만나 인터뷰를 했다. 인터뷰가 끝나고 언젠가 TV로 봤던 모디카 초콜릿 얘기를 꺼냈더니 가방에서 초콜릿을 꺼내서 맛보라고 하면서 모디카 초콜릿의 원조는 멕시코의 아즈텍이고 시칠리아 모디카까지 왔다고 설명해줬다. 하얀 설탕 알갱이가 씹히는 특별한 맛이었는데 달콤한 초콜릿을 끝으로 인터뷰를 마쳤다.

Q. 영화 연출을 언제 시작했나요?
A. 저는 편집자로서 후반 작업에서 영화 촬영법을 훈련하고 첫 발을 내디뎠습니다. 단편 영화 <사랑을 제거하다, Disinstallare un amore>로 처음으로 소심하게 연출에 도전했습니다. 그 작품이 여기 한국을 포함해 전 세계 100개가 넘는 영화제에서 선정되었기 때문에 기반이 되었고, 장편 영화에 도전하는 데 필요한 용기를 주었습니다. 그리고 영화 <이탈로>를 만들었습니다. 감독이 되기 전에는 주로 편집을 했고 영화와 TV, 포스트 프로덕션에 협력하는 일을 담당했습니다.

Q. 영화 <이탈로>의 시나리오는 누가 썼나요? 그리고 영화 음악이 좋았는데 음악감독이 누군가요?
A. 영화의 주제를 정하는 것은 저와 Coralla Ciccolini가 관여했습니다. 코랄라는 당시 시나리오를 업그레이드시키고 Isabella Aguilar가 스토리 편집자로 기여했습니다. 음악은 이 영화의 눈에 보이지 않는 내레이터이며, 사운드트랙은 저와 모든 작품에서 함께 작업한 작곡가 마에스트로 Marco Cascone이 작곡했습니다. 우리는 말을 하지 않아도 서로를 이해합니다.

Q. 혹시 한국에서 <이탈로>를 상영할 계획이 있나요?
A. Italo는 거의 10년 전에 만들어진 영화이지만 여전히 이탈리아 국영 TV에서 정기적으로 방송되고 있습니다. 아직 끝날 기미가 보이지 않네요. 한국에서도 상영된다면 정말 좋겠습니다. 시대를 초월하는 특성을 지닌 이야기 중 하나이기 때문입니다.

Q. 개에 대한 얘기가 언제부터 시작되었나요?
A. 2006년, 떠돌이 개들이 쉬클리에서 한 아이를 공격한 사건이 있었습니다. 아이는 죽었고 그 때부터 유기견들을 제거하기 시작했습니다. 길을 잃은 개 Italo는 사람들의 불신을 극복하고 두려움을 없앴고 인간과 동물 사이의 평화를 회복했습니다. 이탈로는 2011년에 세상을 떠났고 시칠리아의 Villa Penna에 명판을 설치해서 기억하고 있습니다. 지금도 Italo의 무덤을 깨끗하게 유지하기 위해 매년 소액을 기부하는 사람들이 있습니다.

Q. 알레시아의 고향 ‘모디카’를 소개해주세요.
A. 시인 제수알도 부팔리노(Gesualdo Bufalino)는 “모디카는 쪼개진 석류 모양의 마을로, 바다와 가깝지만 시골입니다.”라고 말했습니다. 발 디 노토(Val di Noto)의 유네스코 유적지 안에 있으며 역사와 전통이 살아있는 후기 바로크 시대의 도시입니다. 제가 맹목적으로 이 도시를 사랑하기 때문에 합리적인 이야기를 하는 것이 쉽지 않습니다. 그러나 Modica는 의심할 여지없이 아름다운 곳입니다. 그것은 영혼을 위한 비전입니다. 늘 감동을 받습니다. 하지만, 살기 좋다고 영원히 살 수는 없습니다. 기분이 좋을 때는 예술과 창의성의 메커니즘이 작동하지 않기 때문입니다.

Q. 천체 사진가로도 활동한다고 알고 있습니다.
A. 저는 항상 밤에 해변에서 낚시를 하는데 별이 빛나는 하늘과 많은 시간을 지냈습니다. 어느 순간 하늘이 저를 불렀습니다. 한편으로는 밤의 고요함을 좋아하기도 하지만 제 몸이 새벽까지 잠들지 않기 때문입니다. 지난 몇 년 동안 천천히 하늘, 달, 별들과의 관계를 쌓아 왔는데, 그것은 저의 움직임이 아니라 밤의 고요함 속에서만 들을 수 있는 미묘하고 속삭이는 그들의 부름입니다.

Q. 앞으로 준비하고 있는 프로젝트가 있나요?
A. 2021년 감독이자 천체 사진가로서의 활동은 “Ad Sidera”라는 멀티미디어 및 다중 감각 전시 프로젝트였습니다. 이 프로젝트는 Modica 시에서 매우 성공적이었습니다. 그 전시회에서 가상 몰입의 이야기를 통해 여행을 계속하자는 아이디어가 나왔고 지금 작업하고 있습니다. 한편 저는 18년 동안 작업해 온 다큐멘터리를 마무리하고 있습니다. 이민으로 인해 헤어진 두 가족이 이탈리아와 호주를 오가며 소통하는 이야기입니다.

[Arts&Culture] On August 17th, I watched the movie <Italo> and met and interviewed film director Alessia Scarso at the Italian Cultural Center in Hannam-dong. After the interview, she brought up the story of Modica chocolate, which she had seen on TV one day. She took out some chocolate from her bag and asked me to taste it. She explained that the origins of Modica chocolate were from the Aztecs in Mexico and that they came all the way to Modica, Sicily. She ended the interview with sweet chocolate, which had a special taste of chewy white sugar granules.

Q. When did you start directing movies? 

A. I trained in cinematography and took my first steps in post-production as an editor. I timidly attempted directing for the first time with the short film Disinstallare un amore. That work was selected at over 100 film festivals around the world, including here in Korea, so it laid the foundation and gave me the courage I needed to take on the challenge of making a feature film. And I made the movie <Italo>. Before becoming a director, I mainly edited and collaborated on film, television and post-production.

Q. Who wrote the screenplay for the movie <Italo>? And the movie music was good. Who is the music director? 

A. Coralla Ciccolini and I were involved in deciding the theme of the film. Corala upgraded the screenplay at the time and Isabella Aguilar contributed as story editor. Music is the invisible narrator of this film, and the soundtrack was composed by composer maestro Marco Cascone, with whom I have collaborated on all of my productions. We understand each other even without speaking.

Q. When did the story about dogs start? 

A. In 2006, there was an incident where stray dogs attacked a child in Shikli. The child died and from then on they started getting rid of stray dogs. Italo, a stray dog, overcame people's distrust, removed their fears and restored peace between humans and animals. Italo passed away in 2011 and is remembered by a plaque installed at Villa Penna in Sicily. Even now, there are people who donate small amounts every year to keep Italo's tomb clean.

Q. Please introduce Alessia’s hometown ‘Modica’. 

A. Poet Gesualdo Bufalino said, “Modica is a town shaped like a split pomegranate, close to the sea but rural.” Located within the UNESCO site of Val di Noto, it is a late Baroque city alive with history and tradition. It's not easy to talk rationally because I blindly love this city. But Modica is undoubtedly a beautiful place. It is a vision for the soul. I am always moved. However, you cannot live forever just because you want to. Because when you are in a good mood, the mechanisms of art and creativity do not work.

Q. I understand that you also work as an astrophotographer. 

A. I always go fishing on the beach at night and spend a lot of time with the starry sky. At some point, the sky called me. On the one hand, I like the silence of the night, but it's also because my body doesn't fall asleep until dawn. Over the past few years, I have slowly built a relationship with the sky, the moon, and the stars, not my movements, but their subtle, whispering calls that can only be heard in the silence of the night.

Q. Are there any projects you are preparing for the future? 

A. My work as a director and astrophotographer in 2021 was a multimedia and multi-sensory exhibition project called “Ad Sidera”. This project has been very successful in the city of Modica. From that exhibition came the idea of ​​continuing the journey through the story of virtual immersion, which we are now working on. Meanwhile, I'm finishing a documentary I've been working on for 18 years. It is the story of two families separated by immigration and communicating between Italy and Australia.
