헝가리의 겨울왕국

[아츠앤컬쳐] 헝가리는 계절마다 놀랍도록 다른 모습을 보여주기 때문에 보통 사계절을 다 가보지 않았다면 헝가리를 보지 못한 거나 다름없다고 말한다. 부다페스트도 마찬가지로 겨울에 크리스마스 마켓, 겨울 스포츠, 부다 언덕의 동화같은 눈 덮인 풍경이 있는 원더랜드로 변하기 때문에 적어도 두 번은 방문해야 한다.

헝가리에서 완벽한 대림절 주말을 계획해 보자. 부다페스트는 매력적인 크리스마스 마켓으로도 유명한데, 크리스마스 시즌의 축제 분위기는 크리스마스 후에도 그 열기가 식지 않는다.

우선, 도심 곳곳의 광장을 돌아다니며 다양한 크리스마스 마켓을 경험할 수 있다. 작은 시장부터 유명한 성 슈테판 대성당의 크리스마스 마켓까지 여러 시장의 가판대에는 뱅쇼, 크리스마스 슈트루델, 전통 요리와 헝가리 예술품 및 공예품이 즐비하다.

부다페스트의 대성당 대림절은 여행 포털 유럽 최고의 여행지에서 21개 다른 유럽 도시와 경쟁하여 최고의 축제로 선정되었다. 최근 2020년과 2022년에도 유럽 최고로 “크리스마스 박람회의 스타”라는 타이틀을 얻었으니 놀랄 일도 아니다.

만약 이미 배가 부르고 스포츠 활동이 필요하다면 트램을 타고 도시에서 가장 가까운 스케이트장을 찾아가 보자. 스케이트장이 너무 많아서 선택이 쉽지 않지만, 도심에 머물고 싶지 않다면 1896년부터 운행하는 유럽에서 가장 오래된 지하철 노선 중 하나를 타고 19세기부터 겨울 스포츠 애호가들에게 개방된 시티 파크 아이스링크를 추천한다.

이곳은 스케이트를 신고, 따뜻한 차를 들고서 사람들을 만나고 버이더후냐드성과 유명한 영웅 광장을 감상하기에 완벽한 장소다. 추운 겨울날의 끝자락에 아이스링크에서 몇 발자국 걸어가면 따뜻한 온천탕이 있으니, 이보다 더 좋은 것이 있을까? 세체니 스파는 부다페스트에서 가장 큰 노천탕으로 100년 이상 된 곳이다. 혹시 500년 동안 운영되는 휴식처를 경험하고 싶다면 오래된 터키식 온천 네 곳 중 한 곳을 선택해도 좋다.

다음 날, 부다페스트의 유명한 커피숍에서 헝가리식 아침 식사를 한 후 도시를 떠나 헝가리의 숨겨진 보석 같은 역사적 명소에서 대림절 분위기를 누리기 위해 센텐드레, 에스테르곰, 바츠 또는 에게르와 같은 주변의 작은 마을을 추천한다. 혹은 자연에서 하루를 보내고 싶다면 부다페스트의 랜드마크가 보이는 부다 언덕 노르마파에서 썰매를 타 보자. 언덕으로 가려면 150년 된 톱니궤도 철도를 타고 수백 명의 사람들과 함께 썰매를 탈 것인지, 독특한 명소인 어린이 철도에서 겨울 숲을 감상할 것인지 결정해야 한다.

이 철도는 여느 철도와 마찬가지로 매표소, 디젤 기관차, 신호기, 스위치, 시간표가 있지만 어린이들이 운영하며, 그 노선은 부다 언덕 사이로 뻗어 전망대, 숲속 놀이터, 순례지 등의 명소가 역 가까이에 있고, 여럿이 또는 혼자 여행할 경우에도 반나절 여행의 이상적인 출발점이 된다.

대림절은 일 년 중 가장 훈훈하고 기대에 찬 시기이므로 여러분과 함께 축하할 수 있기를 바란다. 작년 명동 축제와 홍대에서처럼 이번에도 대형 LED 스크린을 통해 헝가리의 겨울 정취를 만끽할 수 있도록 보여드릴 예정이다.

Winter Wonderland in Hungary

People who have visited Hungary usually say that you haven't seen the country if you haven't been there in all four seasons, because each season reveals a surprisingly different face. The same goes for Budapest, which you should visit at least twice, because in winter it turns into a winter wonderland with its Christmas markets, winter sports and fairytale snow-covered landscapes in the Buda hills.

Let's plan a perfect Advent weekend in Hungary. Budapest is also known for its charming Christmas markets, which add a festive atmosphere to the city during the holiday season, and doesn't end right after Christmas. Throughout the city center you can hop from square to square experiencing different Advent markets. Mulled wine, Christmas strudel and traditional dishes along with Hungarian arts and crafts line the stalls of several markets, from the smaller ones to the famous St. Stephen's Basilica Christmas Market. Budapest's Advent Basilica was chosen as the best festive event by the travel portal European Best Destination, competing with events in 21 other European cities. We are not surprised, as it was also voted the best Christmas market in Europe in 2020 and 2022, earning the title of "Standing Star of Christmas Fairs".

If you are already full and feel the need for some sports activity, all you have to do is take the Christmas tram and look for the nearest skating rink in the city. It's not easy to choose, as there are many, but if you don't want to stay in the city center, take one of Europe's oldest metro lines, which has been operating since 1896, and try the City Park Ice Rink, which has been open to winter sports lovers since the 19th century. With skates on your feet and hot tea in your hand, this is the perfect place to meet people and admire the Vajdahunyad Castle and the famous Heroes' Square. The location is also perfect. At the end of a cold winter's day, what could be better than relaxing in a hot bath, which is also just a short walk away from the ice rink? The Széchenyi Bath is the largest open-air bath in Budapest and has been open to visitors for more than 100 years, but you can also choose one of the four old Turkish baths if you want to experience what a 500-year-old, still-operating relaxation spot is like.

The next day, after you had your Hungarian breakfast in one of the famous coffeehouses of Budapest, we recommend you to leave the city and go to the surrounding smaller towns like Szentendre, Esztergom, Vác or Eger to experience the Advent atmosphere of the historical hidden gems of Hungary. If you prefer to spend your day in nature, head to the Buda Hills and experience the sledding life of Normafa with a view of the landmarks of Budapest.

To get to the hills, you need to take the 150-year-old cog railway and decide whether you prefer to sled with hundreds of other people or admire the winter forest from the Children's Railway, one of Budapest's most unique attractions. Like any other railroad, it has ticket offices, diesel locomotives, signals, switches, and a timetable. But unlike other railways, this one is run by children. The line stretches among the Buda hills and lookout towers, forest playgrounds, places of pilgrimage, and other attractions lie close to the stations, making the Children’s Railway the ideal jumping-off point for a half-day trip even for families, friends, groups, or lone travelers.

Advent is one of the warmest and most anticipated times of the year for us, so we invite everyone to celebrate with us.
