트레비소

[아츠앤컬쳐] 이탈리아 북동지역에 위치한 트레비소(Treviso)는 북쪽으로는 알프스 산맥과 남쪽으로는 베네치아 운하 사이에 자리 잡은 도시이다. 근처에 위치한 베네치아만큼 유명한 관광지는 아니지만 트레비소는 아름다운 주변 경관과 중세의 매력적인 정취 덕분에 최근 많은 관광객들의 이목을 끌고 있다.

트레비소는 기원전 1세기에 건설됐지만 도시의 발전과 확장은 기원후 11세기가 되어서야 이루어졌고, 이후 14세기에 베네치아 공화국 관할이 되며 전성기를 맞이했다.

트레비소의 많은 유적과 고대 건축물은 도시의 유구한 역사를 보여준다. 4세기에 지어진 성벽과 ‘비아 카노니케’(Via Canoniche)길을 장식하고 있는, 보존이 잘 된 모자이크는 로마 제국의 영향력을 여실히 드러낸다. 이후 트레비소는 점차 발전하였고 중세에 들어서면서 주요 건축물들이 세워졌다.

이 시기에 도시 성벽이 강화되고 확장되었고 트레비소의 상징이 된 ‘피아짜 데이 시뇨리’(Piazza dei Signori) 광장도 지어졌다. ‘피아짜 데이 시뇨리’ 광장에 자리 잡은 ‘팔라쪼 포데스타’(Palazzo Podesta)와 ‘팔라쪼 트레첸토’(Palazzo Trecento)는 중세기부터 현재까지 지방 정부 청사로 사용되고 있다.

트레비소를 대표하는 건축물 중 하나인 성 베드로 대성당은 로마의 고전주의 형식으로 6세기에 지어졌다가 18세기에 신고전주의 양식으로 복원되었다. 고전주의와 신고전주의가 조화를 이루는 대성당 내부에는 베네치아 출신 화가 ‘티치아노’(Tiziano)의 작품들을 감상할 수 있다.

트레비소의 정취를 가장 잘 느낄 수 있는 곳은 바로 수산시장으로, 도시 중심을 가로질러 흐르는 ‘카냔’(Cagnan)강의 작은 섬 ‘이솔로또 델 마르카토’(Isolotto del Mercato)에 자리잡고 있다. 아름다운 운하로 둘러싸여 있어 베네치아의 분위기를 느낄 수 있을 뿐 아니라 다수의 박물관과 카페가 수산시장 주변에 밀집해 있어 트레비소에서 가장 활발한 지역이기도 하다.

트레비소 중심부를 벗어나면 건축의 거장 ‘팔라디오’(Palladio)가 설계하고 ‘파올로 베로네제’(Paolo Veronese)의 프레스코화로 장식된 ‘빌라 마세르’(Villa Maser)를 만날 수 있다. 예술 애호가라면 꼭 한 번 방문해야 하는 명소로 1996년에 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재되기도 하였다. ‘안토니오 카노바’(Antonio Canova) 박물관도 방문해볼 만한 곳 중 한 곳으로 카노바의 석고상들이 전시되어 있다.

트레비소의 대표적인 식재료인 ‘라디키오’(Radicchio)는 붉은색을 띠고 치커리보다 쓴맛이 나는 붉은 상추로, 샐러드, 리조토, 라자냐를 요리할 때 다양하게 쓰인다. 전 세계적으로 가장 사랑받는 이탈리아 디저트 중 하나인 티라미수의 원조를 두고 트레비소와 베네치아가 서로 경쟁구도를 펼치고 있기도 하다. 트레비소는 또한 아페르티보나 식전주로 많이 마시는 ‘프로세코’(Prosecco) 스파클링 와인의 주요 생산지이다.

베네토 지방 여행을 계획 중이라면 아름다운 트레비소도 방문하는 것을 추천한다.

Treviso

Nestled between the Alps to the north and the Venetian lagoon to the south, Treviso has recently captured the interest of tourists, despite being overshadowed by Venice, thanks to its picturesque surroundings and medieval ambiance. Although the city traces its origins back to the first century BC, its true flourishing began in the eleventh century with the expansion of the city and the construction of major landmarks. It wasn't until the end of the 14th century, after enduring multiple conquests, that Treviso finally found stability under the rule of the Republic of Venice.

The city's rich history is evident in its numerous historical sites and artworks. The ancient walls surrounding Treviso and the well-preserved mosaics in Via Canoniche from the fourth century reflect the influence of the Roman Empire, while most monuments date back to the Middle Ages. The "Piazza dei Signori," the central square, along with notable medieval architectural marvels like "Podesta's Palace" and "Trecento Palace," which have served as local government offices since the thirteenth century, adorn the city's landscape.

The Cathedral of Saint Peter, initially constructed in the sixth century and later remodeled in the neoclassical style in the eighteenth century, showcases a blend of classical and neoclassical architecture, adorned with exquisite paintings by the renowned Venetian artist Tiziano.

For an authentic Treviso experience, visitors can explore the vibrant fish market situated on the "Isolotto del Mercato" on the Cagnan River, evoking the charm of Venice with its picturesque water channels. Outside the city, art enthusiasts should not miss "Villa Maser," designed by the architect Palladio and adorned with frescoes by Paolo Veronese, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Additionally, a visit to the Museum Gipsoteca Antonio Canova provides an opportunity to admire Canova's gypsum models.

Treviso is also renowned for its culinary delights, including radicchio, red and bitter chicory used in various dishes like salads, risotto, and lasagna. As for desserts, Treviso lays claim to being the birthplace of tiramisù, a globally beloved Italian treat. Lastly, Treviso's fame extends to its Prosecco, a sparkling wine perfect for an aperitif or celebration.
