[아츠앤컬쳐] 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등재된 라트비아의 작지만 매력적인 마을 쿨디가에는 독특한 피아노 제조사 ‘클라빈스 피아노’가 있다. 독일-라트비아 출신의 피아노 제작자 데이비드 클라빈스가 설립한 이 회사는 독특한 피아노를 전문적으로 제작한다.

일례로 450i 버티컬 콘서트 그랜드피아노가 있다. 이 피아노는 더욱 풍부한 저음을 위해 기존의 그랜드피아노보다 베이스 현이 더 길고 수직으로 세워져 있다. 최근 450i 모델은 상업용 피아노로는 세계에서 가장 큰 피아노라는 영예를 안았다. 하지만 데이비드 클라빈스는 크기로 기록을 깨는 것이 중요한 것이 아니라 모든 연주자와 청중에게 상상할 수 있는 최고의 사운드를 전달하는 것이 목표라고 말한다. 그는 항상 화두가 되는 크기와 사운드 사이의 딜레마에 대해 언급한다. 이런 효율적인 버티컬 그랜드피아노가 한국 가정에도 등장할 수 있을지 지켜보는 것도 흥미로울 것이다.

이 글의 필자는 벤츠필스의 콘서트홀 ‘라트비야’가 개관하기도 전에 이보다 더 큰 맞춤형 버티컬 콘서트 그랜드피아노 470i 모델을 연주할 수 있는 행운이 있었다. 이 피아노는 콘서트홀의 거의 꼭대기에 설치되어 연주자와 청중 모두에게 완전히 새로운 느낌을 선사한다. 전 세계적으로 피아노는 거의 비슷하기 때문에 이 점은 큰 차별점이었고, 그 이후로 많은 피아노 연주자들이 이 독특한 악기를 연주해 보기 위해 벤츠필스를 방문했다.

새로운 기술과 아이디어의 최전선에 있는 ‘클라빈스 피아노’는 여전히 혁신에 열정을 쏟고 있는 세계 유일의 피아노 제조업체 중 하나다. ‘클라빈스 피아노’는 혁신을 촉진하기 위해 라트비아 투자개발청(LIAA) 비즈니스 인큐베이터의 지원을 활용했다. 처음에 헝가리에서 피아노를 제조하던 데이비드 클라빈스는 코로나 바이러스로 인해 라트비아에 더 오래 머물러야 했다. 라트비아에 머무는 동안 그는 다시 한번 라트비아와 쿨디가와 사랑에 빠졌고, 같은 생각을 가진 기업가와 음악가들을 만났다. 그는 수년간의 해외 생활을 청산하고 자신의 출생지인 라트비아로 다시 돌아왔다.

흥미로운 점은 쿨디가는 아마도 유럽에서 가장 작은 마을일지도 모르는데, 서울에도 쿨디가라는 서점이 있다는 것이다. 이 서점은 다양한 행사를 개최하는 등 매우 활발한 활동을 한다. 예를 들어 주한 라트비아 대사관과 공동으로 살롱 콘서트를 정기적으로 개최하고 있다. 유럽과 한국 관객들에게 라트비아와 한국 음악을 소개하는 것을 목표로, 첫 번째 콘서트에서는 작가 Jānis Mediņš와 Raimonds Pauls의 현대음악과 고전음악을 모두 선보였다.

이 모든 것이 라트비아와 한국 사이에 특별한 유대감을 형성하며, 문화 교류를 통해 사람들을 하나로 묶어 비슷한 영혼의 언어를 구사하게 할 수 있기 때문에, 앞으로 더욱 더 발전하여 많은 분야에 영향을 미칠 수 있기를 바란다.

Klavins Piano – World’s largest piano, showcasing innovation and ambition in musical engineering, made in Kuldīga, Latvia.

Kuldīga, a little but charming town in Latvia, part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, is home to a unique piano manufacturer called Klavins Piano. Founded by the German-Latvian piano maker David Klavins, they specialize in developing un manufacturing unique pianos.

Some examples include 450i Vertical Concert Grand Piano. For a richer bass experience ,this piano has even longer bass strings as a conventional grand piano, and is turned upright. Recently, the 450i model was given the honour as being World’s largest piano for commercial purposes. However, David Klavins mentions that the point is not to break any size records, rather to the goal is to deliver the finest sound imaginable to all performers and listeners alike. He mentions the always topical dilemma between size and sound. It would be interesting to see whether these kinds of more efficient vertical grand pianos could make way in Korean homes as well.

The author of this article had the luck to inspect the Concerthall “Latvija” in Ventspils before it was even opened, where he played the even larger custom-made 470i model of the Vertical Concert Grand Piano. This piano is mounted almost at the top of the concert hall, giving a completely new feeling for both the performer and listener. As pianos are fairly similar across the world, this was a huge difference and since then many piano players have traveled to Ventspils just to try out this unique instrument.

Being at the very forefront of of new technology and ideas, Klavins Piano is one of the only piano manufacturers in the world who still are passionate about innovation. Klavins Piano is an example of company using the LIAA (Investment and Development Agency of Latvia) Business Incubator’s support to foster innovation. After initially manufacturing the pianos in Hungary, David Kļaviņš had to stay in Latvia for a longer while, because of Corona Virus. During his time in Latvia, he fell in love with Kuldīga and Latvia once again and found like-minded entrepreneurs and musicians. After many years abroad, this made him relocate back to Latvia, his birthplace.

What is interesting, there’s even a bookshop in Seoul, called Kuldiga (쿨디가). Kuldīga might be smallest European Town that has a bookshop named after it It is an independent book shop, which is very active with hosting events. For example, the Embassy of Latvia in Korea regularly hosts salon concerts in collaboration with it. The goal is to introduce both European and Korean audiences with Latvian and Korean music. The first concert had both contemporary and classic pieces of music, for example from the author Jānis Mediņš and Raimonds Pauls.

All of this creates a unique bond between Latvia and Korea and we hope that it will be developed more and more in the future, touching many areas, as cultural exchange can unite people and make them speak a similar soul language.
