헝가리 와인

[아츠앤컬쳐] 100년 전 헝가리는 유럽에서 가장 유명한 와인 생산국 중 하나였다. 유럽 왕실들은 귀중한 황금빛 토카이 어수(Tokaji Aszú) 와인으로 가득 찬 잔을 들고 축배를 들었으며, 다른 헝가리산 화이트와인과 레드와인도 유럽 전역에서 찬사를 받았다.

그렇다면 오늘날 왜 헝가리 와인을 많이 볼 수 없는 걸까? 헝가리는 로마 제국 시절부터 이어져 온 유서 깊은 와인 생산국 중 하나다. 그러나 오랜 와인 생산 전통에도 불구하고, 헝가리는 여전히 독특한 위치에 있다고 할 수 있다. 사회주의 체제가 붕괴된 이후 현대 헝가리 와인 산업의 부활이 시작되었고, 다행히 헝가리는 다시금 세계 와인 지도에서 자리를 되찾기 시작했다.

인구가 1,000만 명이 채 되지 않는 헝가리는 빈티지에 따라 매년 250만~300만 헥토리터의 와인을 생산하는 중요한 와인 생산국으로, 세계 15위의 와인 생산국이다. 헝가리는 22개의 와인 지구에 6개의 와인 지역을 자랑하며, 114종의 백포도와 45종의 적포도 품종을 재배하고 있으며, 냉랭한 기후의 품종부터 지중해 스타일의 와인까지 화이트, 로제, 레드, 스위트, 스파클링 와인 등 다양한 와인을 생산한다.

헝가리의 와인 지역 중 가장 유명한 곳은 단연 토카이로, 수세기 동안 인기를 끌어온 곳이다. 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정된 이 지역은 부다페스트에서 차로 두 시간 반 거리의 헝가리 북동부에 있다. 토카이는 세계에서 가장 오래된 스위트 와인 중 하나인 토카이 어수의 발상지로, 현지 포도 품종으로 생산되며 매우 농축된 와인으로 자연스러운 단맛과 산미가 뛰어나며 복합적인 풍미를 자랑한다. 이 와인의 생산은 ‘귀부’로도 알려진 보트리티스가 발달한 포도 수확에서 시작되었다. 이 명망 높은 와인은 설탕에 절인 귤과 살구, 계피, 정향의 향이 특징이며 꿀에 가까운 단맛을 가지고 있다. 밝은 산도는 높은 당도를 상쇄하여, 푸아그라, 크림치즈, 레몬 타르트와 같은 음식과 잘 어울리며 그 자체로도 훌륭하게 즐길 수 있다.

헝가리 와인 세계를 처음 접하기 시작하는 분들에게는 와이너리 방문과 와인 축제 방문이 즐거운 여행이 될 수 있다. 시음을 통해 다양한 품종과 스타일을 비교해보면서 자신의 취향에 맞는 와인을 선택할 수 있다.

가을에는 헝가리 전역에서 열리는 수많은 야외 미식 축제에서 방문객들은 맛있는 현지 요리와 함께 훌륭한 헝가리 와인을 맛볼 수 있다. 이 축제들은 부다페스트의 상징인 부다성부터 남부 다뉴브 및 판논 지역, 발라톤 및 판논 북부 중앙 지역, 그리고 북동부의 토카이 및 헝가리 북부 지역에 이르기까지 전국 각지에서 열린다. 올가을 헝가리를 방문한다면 꼭 이 축제에 참여해 보기 바란다!

Harvest Time in Hungary: Exploring Hungarian Wine

A century ago, Hungary was among the most prominent wine producers in Europe. Royal courts across the continent toasted with glasses filled with precious gold Tokaji Aszú wine, while other rich Hungarian white and red wines were praised and savored throughout Europe.

So why don’t we see more Hungarian wine today? Hungary is one of Europe’s most fascinating and historic wine-producing countries dating back to the Roman Empire. Despite its long winemaking tradition, Hungary is in a unique position; it is still in the process of reintroducing its wines to the world — after the fall of the socialist system, the rebirth of the modern Hungarian wine industry began and, thankfully, Hungary has started regaining its due place on the global wine map.

With a population of just under 10 million, Hungary is a significant global wine producer, yielding approximately 2.5-3 million hectoliters of wine annually, depending on the vintage. This makes Hungary the 15th largest wine producer in the world. The country boasts six wine regions divided into 22 wine districts, cultivating 114 white grape varieties and 45 red ones. Hungary offers a diverse range of wines, from cool-climate varietals to Mediterranean-style wines, including white, rosé, red, sweet, and sparkling options.

Among Hungary's wine regions, Tokaj stands out as the most renowned and has been popular for centuries. The region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is situated in northeastern Hungary, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Budapest. Tokaj is the birthplace of Tokaji Aszú, one of the world’s oldest sweet wines, produced from local grape varieties is an exceptionally concentrated wine, notable for its natural sweetness and acidity, offering a complex array of flavors. Its production begins with the harvest of grapes that have developed botrytis, also known as "noble rot." This esteemed wine often features notes of candied tangerines and apricots, cinnamon, and cloves, with a sweetness akin to honey and nectar. The bright acidity counterbalances the high sugar content, making it a versatile pairing with foods like foie gras, creamy cheeses, lemon tarts, or simply enjoyed on its own.

For those beginning to explore the world of Hungarian wines, visiting wineries and wine festivals can be an enjoyable activity. Tasting samples and comparing different varieties and styles can guide you to select the right bottle for your preference.

In the autumn, Hungary hosts numerous open-air gastronomical events that welcome visitors to sample fine Hungarian wines while devouring delicious local culinary specialties. These festivals take place in diverse locations in the whole country, from the iconic Buda Castle in Budapest to the southern regions of Danube and Pannon, as well as the central regions of Balaton and Upper Pannon, and the northeastern regions of Tokaj and Upper Hungary Wine Region.
