그단스크의 유럽연대센터

[아츠앤컬쳐] 그단스크는 역사적 사건들을 비롯하여 수많은 비밀을 지니고 있는 도시다. 도시에는 옛 정취와 당대의 분위기를 직접적으로 느낄 수 있는 멋진 장소들이 많다.

그단스크는 20세기 유럽인들에게 가장 큰 2대 비극적 사건이 일어난 장소로 의미가 깊다. 1939년에 제2차세계대전이 바로 이 곳에서 발발했으며, 비로소 50 년 후에야 공산주의 탄압에 대한 해체 움직임이 일어났다. 동유럽의 시민들은 그단스크 레닌조선소 폴란드노동조합에서 만들어진 노동연대운동(Solidarność)을 통해 공산주의의 걸림돌에서 벗어날 수 있었다. 폴란드노동조합은 폴란드에서 민주화운동을 시작했으며, 이는 곧 전 세계의 민주화 운동을 주도하는 계기가 되었다.

1939년 9월 고립된 폴란드는 독일 나치와 충돌했고 폴란드의 서부 동맹국들은 “그단스크에서 죽을 가치가 없다”라고 언급했었다. 1980년 8월, 그단스크 노동자들은 공산주의 및 전체주의 독재 정권 하에서 통제를 받던 모든 사람들에게 존엄성과 자유를 주장하며 “우리 모두의 자유를 위해”라는 좌우명을 내세웠다. 당시만 해도 잘 알려지지 않았던 젊은 엔지니어 레흐 바웬사가 1980년 8월 그단스크 조선소의 벽을 넘어 파업에 동참하지 않았다면, 1989년 가을 베를린 장벽은 무너지지 못했을 것이다.

유럽연대센터는 폴란드 노동연대운동의 승리를 기념하고 보존하며, 현대인의 필요에 따라 ‘연대’라는 단어에 대하여 새로운 의미를 부여함과 동시에 재해석하는 현대문화기관이다. 수백만 관광객들이 상설 전시회를 찾고 감동에 상기된 얼굴로 나오는 것은 유럽연대센터와 같은 장소가 여전히 필요하며 가치 있는 곳임을 증명하고 있다.

많은 사람들에게 유럽연대센터 건물은 처녀 항해를 준비 중인 조선대(造船臺)의 배처럼 보일 수도 있다. 유럽연대센터 건물은 2014년에 개관하여 불과 2년 후에 유럽 박물관 상을 받았다. 이는 폴란드 박물관 역사상 40년 만에 첫 수상 사례이다. 심사위원단에 따르면 유럽연대센터는 “자유와 연대의 의미를 증진시키는 문화 기관의 좋은 사례”라며, “유럽연대 센터가 품고 있는 여러 사건들은 현대 유럽 토론의 장이 되게끔 한다”라고도 거론된다. 최근 2018년 말까지 약 3백만 명의 관광객들이 유럽연대센터를 찾았다.

상설 전시회: 어린이뿐만 아니라 모든 가족을 위한 볼거리가 다양한 멀티미디어 전시회로 오디오 가이드가 제공된다. 상설 전시회는 자유를 향한 폴란드의 발자취 그리고 유럽에서의 변화 과정에 대한 이야기를 풀어내고 있다. 1980년 8월의 베테랑이 안내하는 그룹 투어, 큐레이팅 투어에 참여해 보기 바란다.

영화 및 도서 홍보실: 유럽연대센터에는 매일 다양한 체험거리를 제공한다. 영화 상영부터 토론, 작가와의 만남, 콘서트, 회의, 축제뿐만 아니라 상설 전시회까지 많은 것을 체험할 수 있다. 방문하면 도서, 또는 미디어 자료실도 제한 없이 이용 가능하다.

어린이들을 위한 볼거리: 유럽연대센터는 가족 테마파크이기도 하다. 교육 목적의 워크샵이 매일 진행되며 어린이와 보호자가 함께 참여할 수 있다.

조선소 풍경과 함께하는 케이크 한 조각: 빌딩의 내부는 겨울정원의 모습을 표현하고 있다. 이 곳에서 여러분은 휴식을 취하며 조각 케이크를 맛볼 수 있다. 또한 바와 레스토랑도 이용할 수 있으며, 유럽연대센터 6층의 꼭대기에서는 옛 조선소의 풍경과 함께 그단스크 구시가지를 전망할 수 있다.

European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk 

Gdańsk hides many secrets and the evidence that it witnessed incredible historicalevents. There are many fantastic places worth visiting to stand face to face with the spirit of the past and feel the mood of that time.
 

It is unique in the world that it is in the city of Gdańsk that the clips of two great tragedies that affected Europeans in the 20th century are fastened. In 1939 the Second World War began here, and it was here, 50 years later, that the dismantling of communist oppression began. The citizens of Eastern Europe were freed from the shackle of communism by the Solidarność / Solidarity movement, born in the Gdańsk Lenin Shipyard Polish trade union that peacefully initiated democratic changes in Poland and, behind it, in the whole of Europe.
 

In September 1939, an isolated Poland fell afoul of Nazi Germany, western allies of Poland said that “it’s not worth dying for Gdansk”. In August 1980, Gdańsk workers claimed dignity and freedom not only for themselves but also for all of those who lived under the dictatorship of the communist totalitarianism. They introduced a Polish motto: “For our freedom and yours”. If, the then unknown young electrician Lech Wałęsa hadn’t jumped over the Gdańsk Shipyard wall in August 1980 to join the strike, the Berlin Wall wouldn’t have fallen in Autumn 1989.
 

The European Solidarity Centre is a modern cultural institution created to commemorate and preserve the memory of the Solidarność / Solidarity movement victory, and also to build a new identity for, and reinterpret, the word ‘solidarity’ according to the needs of the modern individual and of the world. Hundreds of thousands of passionately engaged visitors and the excitement that they are packed with at the end of their tour of the permanent exhibition prove that such a place is necessary, and that the ideals of solidarity, whether spelt with a capital S or not, remain valid and up-to-date.
 

To many, the ECS building looks like a ship on a slipway getting ready for its maiden voyage. The ECS building opened in 2014. Just two years later, the ECS received the COUNCIL OF EUROPE MUSEUM PRIZE. This was the first time for a Polish museum to receive the prize in its 40-year history. According to the judging panel, the ECS is "a fascinating example of a culture institution working to promote freedom and solidarity", while “the events it recounts and its programme make it a forum for contemporary Europe". By the end of 2018, it had been visited by 3 million guests.
 

THE PERMANENT EXHIBITION | A real hit! An exciting multimedia exhibition, with its audio-guide family path, is also an attraction for families with children. CHILDREN’S ATTRACTIONS | The ECS has a family Play Department. Every day, there are educational workshops for school groups and workshops for children and their parents/guardians.
