아뇨네와 몰리세 주 북부

[아츠앤컬쳐] 이탈리아 중남부의 가운데에 위치한 몰리세 주는 역사, 예술, 자연의 아름다움이 가득한 보고(寶庫)로, 오랜 전통의 매력이 숨 막힐 듯 아름다운 풍경과 완벽하게 어우러져 있다. 그 중 아뇨네는 수세기 동안 이어져 온 장인 정신과 문화, 오염되지 않은 자연으로 매혹적인 여행지다.

아뇨네는 오래된 종 주물공장 중 하나로 서기 약 1000년경에 설립된 ‘마리넬리 교황청 종 주조소’가 있다. 이 주조소는 세계에서 세 번째로 오래된 가족 경영 기업이라는 명성을 자랑한다. 이탈리아에서 가장 권위 있는 종교 건축물들을 장식하는 종 제작을 전문으로 하며, 세계에서 가장 큰 수도원인 몬테카시노 수도원을 비롯한 상징적인 대성당의 종들을 제작한 것으로 유명하다.

최근에는 프란체스코 교황에게 전달될 공식 ‘2025 주빌레오 종’ 프로젝트를 맡아, 무게가200킬로그램에 전체를 청동으로 만들고 주빌레오 상징을 비롯한 정교한 무늬를 새겼다. 여기에 숨은 예술성과 문화유산을 탐구하고자 하는 사람들을 위해 주조소는 대중에 개방된 박물관을 운영하고 있다. 박물관을 방문하면 이탈리아의 수많은 뛰어난 장인 정신 중 하나인 금속 주조 전통에 대해 좀더 자세히 알 수 있다.

아뇨네의 유명한 금속공예 전통은 “불의 도시”라는 별칭과 깊은 관련이 있다. 이 마을의 불을 다루는 기술과 독특한 지역 의식을 반영하는 이름이다. 아뇨네는 크리스마스 시즌 동안 거행되는 특별한 전통 의식, ‘은도차타(Ndocciata)’로 그 역사를 기린다. 남자들은 가문비나무와 마른 빗자루로 만든 횃불을 들고 거리를 행진하며 마을의 주요 구역을 따뜻하게 비추는 불의 강을 만든다. 장관을 이루는 이 퍼레이드는 마을에서 가장 큰 종이 울린 뒤 시작되며, 아뇨네의 불꽃 같은 정신과 고대 전통을 생생하게 보여준다.

전통의 향기가 그윽한 마을의 구도심을 탐방하는 동안, 풍미 가득한 현지 음식으로 얇고 흰 성찬 빵 사이에 아몬드, 호두, 꿀을 버무려 넣은 단순하고도 맛있는 간식, 오스티에 디 아뇨네(Ostie di Agnone)를 맛볼 수 있다. 보통 크리스마스 디저트로 먹지만 연중 내내 즐기며, 마을의 불의 상징과도 연결되어 있다. 또한, 전통음식 푼나뗄리에(Funnateglie)는 달걀, 토마토 페이스트, 소시지를 섞어 만들며 간단하면서도 든든한 점심 식사로 손색이 없다.

Agnone and Northern Molise

Hidden in the heart of central-southern Italy, the region of Molise is a treasure of history, art, and natural beauty, where the charm of time-honored traditions blends seamlessly with breathtaking landscapes. Agnone is home to one of the oldest bell foundries in the world: the Marinelli Pontifical Foundry. Established as far back as 1000 A.D., it holds the distinction of being the third oldest family-run business in the world. Specializing in bells that adorn Italy's most prestigious religious buildings, the foundry has produced masterpieces commissioned by iconic cathedrals, including the Montecassino Abbey, the biggest monastery in the world.

Recently, the foundry took on a monumental project, crafting the official 2025 Giubileo Bell to be presented to Pope Francis. Weighing 200 kilograms and entirely made of bronze, this bell features intricate designs, including the Giubileo symbol. For those seeking to explore the artistry and heritage behind these creations, the foundry offers a museum open to the public, where you can witness the skill and passion that has been passed down through generations. And, by visiting the museum you get to learn more about the metal founding tradition, another one of the many Italian craftsmanship excellences.

The town's renowned metalworking tradition is deeply intertwined with its title as the 'City of Fire,' a name that reflects both its fiery craft and its distinctive local rituals. Agnone celebrates its history with a unique tradition called ‘Ndocciata’, a ritual that takes place during the Christmas holidays. Men carrying torches made from spruce wood and dried brooms march through the streets, creating a river of flames that warms the town’s main districts. This captivating spectacle, which follows the ringing of the town’s largest bell, is a living testament to Agnone's fiery spirit and ancient traditions.

The town’s historical center is a living museum of its own, where medieval churches dating back to the 1300s, elegant palaces, and Venetian workshops transport you to a bygone era. Wandering through its cobbled streets, you’ll be immersed in the timeless atmosphere of this charming Italian borough, which feels like a true time machine.

An extra special mention about the area goes to its local flavors. As you explore the town’s historic center, where the air is filled with the scent of tradition, you can have a bite of a delightful treat known as the”Ostie di Agnone”, a simple yet delicious snack made from white communion wafer thin layers filled with almonds, walnuts, and honey. Normally a Christmas desert, it can be enjoyed all year-round and it is too connected to the town’s fire symbolism. Moreover, the whole area offers many traditional meals, like the funnateglie, a mix of eggs, tomato paste and sausages, that can make for a great quick lunch.

Beyond Agnone, Northern Molise is a region of extraordinary natural beauty. The area, which borders Southern Abruzzo, is home to some of Italy’s most stunning landscapes. A highlight is the Rio Verde Waterfalls, the highest natural waterfalls in the Apennines, nestled in a WWF-protected oasis and regional nature reserve.
