크롤레베츠는 우크라이나 수미 지역의 작은 마을로, 이 마을의 직조자인 류드밀라 민투스 씨는 매우 독특한 수건을 제작한다. 하얀 바탕 위에 빽빽한 붉은 줄무늬 사이로 물, 땅, 하늘, 불 등 온 세상의 요소들을 상징적인 기호로 표현하여 장식을 꾸미고 있으며, 그녀의 손을 거쳐 간 수건의 길이는 수천 킬로미터에 달한다. 거의 반세기 동안 그녀는 국립 직업 교육 기관인 ‘크롤레베츠 고등 직업 학교’의 교사로서, 후손을 위해 크롤레베츠의 브랜드를 보존할 가치가 있다고 말하며 젊은이들에게 자신의 지식을 전수해 왔다.

크롤레베츠의 수건은 항상 긍정적인 에너지를 담고 있다. 이 민속 예술 작품은 믿음, 희망, 사랑으로 가득 차 있으며, 선한 의미를 담고 있다. 2006년부터 우크라이나 민속 예술가 협회의 수미 지부 회원인 류드밀라 민투스 씨는 2021년에 우크라이나의 무형 문화유산 ‘크롤레베츠 복합 직조’의 전수자로 인증받았으며, 2023년 세계 마스터 협회의 세계 마스터 위원회(예술 부문 - 손 복합 직조)로부터 ‘세계 마스터 2023’ 상을 수상했다.

크롤레베츠 직조의 전통을 이어가며, 이를 전 세계에 알리고 홍보하는 그녀는 많은 예술 행사와 학술 실무 회의, 전국 세미나 워크숍, 페스티벌 등에서 적극적으로 활동하며 전통 문화를 널리 알리고 있다. 또한 그녀는 다양한 행사에서 마스터 클래스를 지속적으로 진행하며, 믿을 수 없을 정도로 창의성을 발휘하는 헌신적인 열성가이기도 하다. 학생들과 함께 폴란드를 방문하였을 때에도 직조기에서 작업하는 모습으로 모두에게 깊은 인상을 남기고, 폴란드인들의 마음을 사로잡았다.

류드밀라 씨의 작품은 전 세계 여러 나라, 박물관, 사원, 개인 소장품 등에 소중히 보존되어 있다. 그녀의 작품 ‘나와 내 권리’는 스위스에 본부를 둔 분쟁 지역 문화유산 보호를 위한 국제 연합(ALIPH)의 유엔 본부를 장식하고 있으며, 폴란드와 에스토니아 등지에서는 개인 소장품으로도 널리 퍼져 있다. 그녀의 창작 작품은 수 차례 전국적으로부터 지역, 시 전시회 및 축제에 전시되어 항상 시민과 미술 평론가로부터 찬사를 받아왔다.

끊임없이 지속되는 그녀의 수공예. 그 안의 철학은 무엇일까? 그녀의 수공예 철학에 대한 대답은 단순하고 명료하다. 세상에 더 많은 선을 가져오고, 사람들이 평화와 사랑이 가득한 곳에서 살 수 있도록 하는 것. 그녀는 수건을 통해 아름다운 목소리로 세상에 외치고 있는 것이다.

The Legacy of Krolevets

: Spreading Goodness through the Art of Weaving

It is difficult to find a nation that shows such deep affection and respect for a towel that accompanies us throughout our lives, from birth to the last moment. The Krolevets towel is a symbol of Ukraine, like an anthem that resonates eternally. The Krolevets towel is one of the five main traditional artifacts of Ukraine protected by the EU, meaning it cannot be produced or replicated anywhere else but Krolevets.

Krolevets is a small village in the Sumy region of Ukraine, and Liudmyla Myntus, a weaver from this village, creates very unique towels. On a white background with dense red stripes, ornaments representing elements of the world such as water, land, sky, and fire are woven with symbolic signs. The length of the towels that have passed through her hands spans thousands of kilometers.

For nearly half a century, she has been passing on her knowledge to young people as a teacher at the State Vocational Education Institution "Krolevets Higher Vocational School," emphasizing that weaving is the brand of Krolevets and worth preserving for future generations.

The Krolevets towel always carries positive energy. This piece of folk art is filled with faith, hope, and love, and is created with good intentions. Since 2006, Liudmyla Myntus has been a member of the Sumy Regional Branch of the National Union of Folk Art Masters of Ukraine. From 2021, she has held a certificate confirming that she is a bearer of the intangible cultural heritage "Krolevets complex weaving" of Ukraine, and in 2023, she was recognized by the World Masters Association and received the "World Master 2023" award from the World Masters Committee (Art Departments - Hand Complex Weaving).

She continues the tradition of Krolevets weaving, promoting it worldwide. She actively participates in many artistic events, academic conferences, national seminars, workshops, and festivals, spreading traditional culture. Furthermore, she is a dedicated enthusiast who constantly conducts master classes at various events, taking incredibly creative steps. For example, during her stay with students in Poland, her work at the loom left a deep impression on everyone and captivated the hearts of the Poles.

Liudmyla's works are cherished in various countries around the world, in museums, temples, and private collections. Her work titled "Me and My Rights" decorates the UN headquarters of the International Alliance for the Protection of Cultural Heritage in Conflict Areas (ALIPH), based in Switzerland, and can also be found in private collections in Poland and Estonia. Her creative works have been exhibited multiple times at national, regional, and city exhibitions and festivals, always receiving positive feedback from citizens and art critics alike.

What is the philosophy within her enduring handicrafts? Her answer to the philosophy of her handicrafts is simple and clear: to bring more good into the world, and for people to live in peace and love. Through her towels, she is shouting out to the world with a beautiful voice.
