The Viennese Coffee House Culture: An Insight into a Unique Tradition

Vienna’s coffee houses are more than just places to drink coffee. They are spaces that represent the lifestyle and culture of the Viennese people, and they are an important part of the city’s identity. In 2011, the Vienna coffee house culture was listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and attracts numerous visitors every year.

The origins of Vienna’s coffee houses date back to the late 17th century. It is said that after the second Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683, coffee sacks left behind by the retreating Ottoman army became the impetus for the creation of coffee houses. According to historical records, the first official coffee house in Vienna was opened in 1685 by the Armenian merchant Johannes Theodat, which marked the beginning of Vienna’s coffee house culture.

This is because people value spending time drinking coffee in a leisurely and comfortable atmosphere, promoting creativity and conversation. Stefan Zweig described this place as a “democratic club,” and many literary works were born here, and even today, readings and piano recitals are held.

When the weather gets warmer, outdoor seating is provided. This tradition, called “Schänigarten,” began in the garden where Johann Strauss played in the 18th century. Even today, concerts on summer Sundays in Vienna and the countryside remain an important part of the coffeehouse.
