산 지미냐노

[아츠앤컬쳐] 아름다운 시에나 지방에는 꿈결 같은 토스카나 풍경의 정수가 고스란히 보존되어 있는 작은 마을이 있다. 그곳은 바로 1990년 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재된 산지미냐노다. 참으로 가히 그렇게 일컬을 만하다.

San Gimignano

In the beautiful Siena province, lies a fine town where the true essence of the Tuscanian dreamy landscape is preserved in all of its glory: San Gimignano, which was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1990. And very rightfully so.

Surrounded by high walls, like in a true Medieval fortress, as you walk through Porta San Giovanni, the most ancient of the doors that open up to the historical center, be sure that you will feel star-struck by the beauty of the homonymous street, full of craftsmen shops, where you can get all of sorts of unique and handmade souvenirs: from ceramic to perfumes, everyone can get the perfect souvenir to keep as a memory of the town’s beauty. Adorned by plenty of terrific viewpoints, from which you can admire the romantic country fields that surround the area, Via San Giovanni ends in Piazza della Cisterna, which is called after the ancient water tank that stands in the middle of the square and right in front the majestic towers from which San Gimignano has acquired its nickname of “the beautiful towers’ town” or the “Manhattan of the Middle Ages”.

Don’t be deceived by its compact size: San Gimignano offers a wealth of activities, all set in a charming, less-crowded atmosphere that invites you to explore all of its beauty at your own pace. You can visit the most important tourist sites with an all-day pass, which will allow you to access the town’s most distinctive attractions: the town’s main Cathedral and, right beside it, the Holy Art Museum, in which you can immerse yourself in the wonderful Medieval paintings as well as enjoy the exposition of ornaments that embellished older Catholic churches or even dresses made for Bishops and Cardinals to wear on very special occasions. But the beauty of San Gimignano does not lie only in its Medieval sceneries, as, included in the all day-pass there is also the Modern and Contemporary art gallery, set in a majestic Neoclassical building, in which one can admire later paintings and sculptures as well as up-to-date temporary exhibitions.
