한국에서 만나는 헝가리 발레

[아츠앤컬쳐] 예술성과 체력을 겸비한 발레는 오랫동안 문화적, 지리적 경계를 넘어 세계인의 사랑을 받아왔다. 이 시대를 초월한 예술은 헝가리에서도 오랜 세월 동안 풍부한 문화 전통과 역사적 사건들 속에서 꽃피워 왔다. 발레 공연은 18세기에 헝가리에서 처음 등장했으며, 종종 귀족 저택 내의 사설 극장에서 무대에 올려졌다. 시간이 흐르면서 전문 발레단이 설립되어 헝가리 국내외에서 활발히 활동하였다.

헝가리 발레 역사에서 중요한 전환점은 1884년 헝가리 국립 오페라하우스의 개관과 함께 찾아왔다. 이는 오늘날 헝가리 국립 발레단으로 알려진 국립 발레단의 설립을 위한 토대를 마련한 것이었다. 이 유서 깊은 기관 외에도, 현재 헝가리에는 세계적으로 인정받고 국가의 지원을 받는 여러 무용단이 있으며, 그 중에서도 특히 주목할 만한 단체에 바로 세게드 현대발레단이 있다.

1987년 헝가리 남동부 세게드에서 창단된 이 발레단은 오늘날 헝가리를 대표하는 현대무용단으로 성장했다. 원래는 클래식 발레를 중심으로 활동했으나, 1990년대 예술감독 터마시 유로니치의 예술적 리더십 아래 놀라운 변화를 겪게 된다. 그는 현대무용, 극적 서사, 강렬한 시각적 표현을 결합한 새로운 방향성을 제시하며, 무용단의 정체성을 대담하게 재정립했다.

현재 세게드 현대발레단은 고전 발레의 테크닉과 현대무용의 아크로바틱한 움직임, 연극적 요소, 강렬한 이미지가 어우러진 독창적인 무대를 만들고 있다. 이들은 표트르 차이콥스키, 이고르 스트라빈스키, 카를 오르프, 페테르 외트뵈시 등 전설적인 작곡가의 작품을 자신들만의 감각으로 재해석하며, 전통적인 관객과 현대적인 감성을 지닌 관객 모두에게 깊은 울림과 시각적 감동을 선사하고 있다.

그 가운데서도 가장 널리 알려진 대표작은 카를 오르프의 1937년 칸타타에 기반한 <카르미나 부라나>이다. 이 작품은 헝가리 현대무용의 정체성을 상징하는 대표적인 공연으로, 세게드 현대발레단의 예술적 개성과 철학을 응축한 걸작이다. 원작의 가사나 이야기 구조를 직역하기보다는, 운명과 열정, 관능, 삶의 순환이라는 음악 속 주제를 시각적으로 풀어낸다. 무대는 몰입감 넘치고 감정적으로도 강렬한 여정으로 관객을 초대하며, 유로니치의 안무는 억제와 해방 사이의 긴장감을 섬세하게 표현한다. 카를 오르프의 타악 중심의 역동적인 음악과 결합된 이 무대는 시각적으로도 강렬하고 정서적으로도 깊은 공명을 자아낸다.

작년의 성공적인 공연에 이어, 헝가리는 올해도 제21회 부산국제무용제의 주빈국으로 다시 초청받았다. 주한리스트헝가리문화원은 BIDF와의 협력을 통해 세게드 현대발레단을 한국에 초청하게 되어 큰 영광으로 생각한다. 이번 제21회 부산국제무용제에서 세게드 현대발레단은 대표작 카르미나 부라나를 선보일 예정이며, 이는 한국 관객들에게 헝가리 현대무용의 진수를 경험할 수 있는 특별한 기회가 될 것이다.

Hungarian Ballet in Korea

Ballet, a compelling blend of artistry and athleticism, has long transcended cultural and geographical boundaries. In Hungary, this timeless art form has flourished over the centuries, shaped by the country’s rich cultural traditions and historical milestones. Ballet performances first appeared in Hungary in the 18th century, often staged in private theatres within aristocratic estates. Over time, professional ballet companies were established, performing across the country and abroad.

A pivotal moment in Hungarian ballet history came with the opening of the Hungarian State Opera House in 1884, which laid the foundation for the creation of a national ballet company—today known as the Hungarian National Ballet. Alongside this esteemed institution, Hungary is now home to several internationally acclaimed and state-supported dance companies, among them the innovative and dynamic Szeged Contemporary Ballet.

Founded in 1987 and based in the southeastern city of Szeged, the Szeged Contemporary Ballet has become Hungary’s foremost contemporary dance company. Originally established as a classical ballet troupe, the company underwent a remarkable transformation in the 1990s under the artistic leadership of Tamás Juronics, who redefined its identity through a bold new vision rooted in contemporary dance, theatrical storytelling, and striking visual expression.

Today, the company is known for its distinctive artistic language—a sophisticated fusion of classical ballet technique and modern dance, infused with acrobatic movements, theatrical elements and powerful visions performed in the highest technical and artistic quality. Their repertoire includes interpretations of works by legendary composers such as Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Igor Stravinsky, Carl Orff, and Péter Eötvös, with each performance delivering emotional depth and visual impact that resonate with both traditional and contemporary audiences.

Among the company’s most celebrated productions is Carmina Burana, based on Carl Orff’s 1937 cantata. This signature work is a cornerstone of Hungarian contemporary dance and a powerful testament to the company's artistic identity. Rather than offering a literal adaptation of the original texts, Szeged Contemporary Ballet’s Carmina Burana presents a visually immersive and emotionally charged journey through the music’s themes—fate, passion, sensuality, and the cyclical rhythms of life. Juronics’s choreography masterfully navigates the tension between control and release, pairing expressive movement with Orff’s percussive and dramatic score to create a performance that is as visually arresting as it is emotionally resonant.

Following last year’s successful performance Hungary has again been selected as a guest of honor for this year’s Busan International Dance Festival. Liszt Institute – Hungarian Cultural Center Seoul is honored to partner with BIDF to bring Szeged Contemporary Ballet to Korea. The company will present its iconic Carmina Burana at the 21st Busan International Dance Festival, offering Korean audiences a rare opportunity to experience one of Hungary’s most compelling contemporary dance works.
