이탈리아의 여름 해변 라이프스타일

[아츠앤컬쳐] 봄이 끝나갈 무렵 이탈리아 사람들이 여름 주말 계획으로 가장 먼저 떠올리는 것은 가족이나 친구들과 같이 또는 혼자 해변에서 시간을 보내는 것이다. “해변으로 가자!”는 말은 듣는 이의 얼굴과 마음에 미소를 짓게 한다.

여름 해변에서 ‘반뇨’ 자리를 빌리는 것은 오랜 전통이다. 많은 이탈리아 사람들은 가족이나 친구들과 함께 몇 주씩 바닷가에서 여름을 보내며 자라왔기에, 해변에 얽힌 정서적 유대감이 깊다. 매년 같은 반뇨를 찾는 것은 일종의 추억이자, 사람들과의 재회를 의미한다. 반뇨는 단순히 햇볕을 즐기고 수영하는 장소를 넘어, 사교의 중심지다. 서로 인접한 반뇨의 사람들, 직원들은 단골 손님과 우정을 쌓고, 아이들은 해마다 같은 친구들과 모래밭에서 뛰놀며 자라난다.

'반뇨’는 원래 ‘목욕’이나 ‘욕실’을 뜻하지만, 해변에서는 일반적으로 파라솔과 선베드 대여, 탈의실, 샤워실, 화장실 등 다양한 서비스를 제공하는 사설 비치 클럽이나 해변 공공 시설을 말한다. 반뇨는 대부분 사설로 선베드나 파라솔 이용에 요금을 내지만 공공 구역은 개인 비치 세트를 가져가 무료로 즐길 수 있다. 반뇨에는 레스토랑이나 트라토리아가 있어 신선한 해산물에 리소 프레도, 카프레제 샐러드 등 전형적인 여름 음식을 맛볼 수 있다. 아침 식사나 아페리티보(식전주)를 즐길 수 있는 카페나 바에서 커피, 스낵, 젤라토 등을 판매한다. 일부 반뇨는 어린이 놀이터와 수상 스포츠 장비도 갖추고 있다.

일반적인 해변의 하루는 아침 바에서 커피나 카푸치노, 그리고 크루아상으로 시작해, 예약해 둔 선베드로 가서 책을 읽거나 수영 또는 햇볕을 쬐며 휴식을 취한다. 점심은 클럽에서 가벼운 식사와 시원한 음료를 마시고, 오후에는 파라솔 그늘에서 낮잠을 청하기도 한다. 해질 무렵에는 간단한 안주로 아페리티보를 즐기며 하루를 마무리한다. 로마, 밀라노, 피렌체 등 대도시의 가족들은 매년 같은 해변, 같은 반뇨를 찾고, 몇 년 전부터 미리 예약해둔 파라솔 자리에서 여름을 보낸다. 바닷가 근처에 살거나 별장이 있는 사람들은 여름 내내 선베드를 통째로 예약해 두는 경우도 흔하다.

이탈리아에는 매력적인 해안 경관을 자랑하는 여름 휴가지가 많다. 토스카나 지방의 비아레조, 포르테 데이 마르미, 리도 디 카마이오레 같은 도시는 잘 정비된 반뇨와 활기찬 쇼핑가로 유명하다. 에밀리아-로마냐 지방의 리미니, 리치오네, 체르비아 등도 로마냐 해안의 인기 해변 도시다. 사르데냐 섬의 코스타 스메랄다는 포르토 체르보, 포르토 로톤도를 중심으로 아름다운 자연 해변을 자랑한다. 또한 캄파니아 지방의 아말피 해안은 포지타노처럼 화려한 색감의 마을들이 모여 있는 절경이다.

이탈리아인에게 여름철 해변은 제2의 집이다. 반뇨는 단순한 해수욕장이 아니라 여름 한 철을 보내는 클럽으로, 사람들은 여기서 바닷바람을 쐬고, 일광욕을 하며 책을 읽고 대화를 나누며 교류하고, 음악을 들으며 맛있는 음식을 먹고, 해질녘의 황홀한 노을을 함께 즐긴다. 사랑하는 사람들과 보내는 그 시간은 삶의 기쁨이다. 이탈리아 사람들은 말한다. “Senza mare, non è estate.” ― “바다가 없으면, 여름이 아니다.”

Italian Summer Beach Lifestyle

Since the last month of the spring season in Italy, the first plan that comes to mind for most Italians to spend most weekends would be enjoying the beach with family and friends, or even going solo.  Andiamo in spiaggia, let’s go to the beach, an invitation that would bring a smile to the face and to the heart.

In Italy, going to the beach for vacation and renting space at a bagno is a summer lifestyle tradition. Many Italians grew up spending summers at the coast for some weeks with parents, grandparents, children, cousins, friends, creating strong emotional attachments.  Returning to the same bagno becomes a big event, a reunion of memories and people. A bagno is more than a place to enjoy the sun and swim, it’s a social hub. People form friendships with neighboring bagno families, staff of the club, and other regular customers. Children grow up playing with the same beach friends each year. 

The term bagno, or bagni in plural form, meaning “bath” or “bathroom” is commonly used to refer to public beach establishments along the coast. These are private beach clubs or bathing facilities that offer services such as: sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, changing rooms, showers, and restrooms.

There are many bagni nearshores, privately owned and to be able to access the services, sunbed and umbrella areas, people are required to pay.  However, there are public areas which are free, and people should bring their own beach set. The bagno also provides food service, a restaurant or trattoria offering fresh seafood, pasta, pizza, and other typical summer food, for instance, riso freddo with frutti di mare, seafood salad or caprese salad. There is also a café or bar for breakfast and aperitivo providing coffee, snacks, and gelato. Some clubs include playgrounds for children and water sports equipment.

The routine of a typical day at the beach includes having a morning coffee or cappuccino and a cornetto at the bagno bar.  Going to the reserved sunbed, reading, swimming, or lying down under the sun to get tanned, then back to the club to have a light lunch and some fresh drinks. After lunch, going back to have an afternoon nap under the umbrella, then have an aperitivo time at sunset with some spritz and snacks.

Many families, especially from cities like Rome, Milan, and Florence, return to the same beach and the same bagno every summer, often renting the same umbrella spot, usually close to the water front that they have reserved years before. It’s common to reserve a sunbed for the entire summer season, especially for people who live around the beach area or those who have summer homes (seconda casa).

There are some popular regions for beach destinations and charming coastal scenery, e.g. in Tuscany, some popular cities like Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi, and Lido di Camaiore, offering many organized beach clubs, and lively shopping promenade. In Emiglina-Romana, towns along the Romagna Riviera, namely Rimini, Riccione, and Cervia. In Sardinia, the coastal area, Costa Smeralda, with towns like Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo, providing stunning natural beaches. The Amalfi Coast, part of Campania Region, consists of stunning seaside towns, including the colorful Positano.

For Italians, in Summer, la spiaggia (the beach) becomes an extension of the home, and the bagno becomes a summer “club” where people cherish the leisure of inhaling iodine air, sun bathing to get perfect tanned skin, reading books, having good conversation to create social connection, listening some music, having good food, enjoying sunset, and being together with loved ones. “Senza mare, non è estate.” “Without the sea, it’s not summer.”
