살아 움직이는 도시, 바르샤바

[아츠앤컬쳐] 바르샤바는 현재 제2의 전성기를 맞고 있다. 역동적이며 풍부한 문화를간직한 폴란드의 수도로서 매우 활기찬 대도시이며 꼭 가봐야 할 도시 중 하나이다. 바르샤바는 전통과 현대가 독특한 조화를 이루고 풍부한 문화유산, 다양한 야간 유흥 시설, 최고의 레스토랑을 비롯하여 자연까지 모든 것이 갖춰져 있기 때문에 싱글, 커플 또는 가족 단위 등 모든 관광객을 매료시키고 누구나 즐기며 만족할 만한 곳이다.

며칠간 왕실 구경을 해보는 것도 더할 나위 없이 좋을 것이다. 비록 폴란드 왕의 시대는 지난 역사의 한 부분이지만, 도시에는 여전히 그 유산이 많이 남아 있다. 왕들의 발자취를 따라가 보기에 가장 좋은 코스는 캐슬 광장에 있는 지그문트 기둥과 바로 근처에 있는 로얄캐슬부터 둘러보는 것이다.

로얄캐슬은 왕궁과 마지막 폴란드 왕이 세운 가장 아름다운 여름 정원으로 유명한 와지엔키 공원, 그리고 빌라누프 궁전을 잇는 중심지이다. 비엔나 전투에서 투르크인들을 정복한 왕 얀 소비에스키 3세는 바로 이곳 빌라누프 궁전에서 사랑하는 아내 마리시엔카와 함께 살았었다.

다음으로는 유네스코 세계유산에 오른 올드타운의 낭만적인 거리를 산책해 보자. 올드타운의 마켓 광장(Old Town Market Square) 한가운데에는 도시의 수호자이자 상징물인 바르샤바 인어 동상이 있다. 바르샤바는 건축적인 면에서 폴란드 유대인 박물관, 그리고 세계적 수준의 바르샤바 봉기 박물관이 유명하다. 이 두 곳을 방문하면 바르샤바가 겪은 불안하고 격동적인 시기를 잘 이해할 수 있다.

또한 고대부터 현재까지 무려 83만 점이 넘는 전시물을 보유한 국립 박물관은 미술 애호가들이 찾기에도 좋은 공간이다. 이곳은 폴란드와 더불어 전 세계의 미술 걸작품이 여러 테마로 나눠진 갤러리에 전시되어 있다.

프레데릭 쇼팽 박물관을 방문하는 것도 잊지 말자. 이 박물관은 작곡가 쇼팽이 바르샤바에서 20년을 보낸 사실을 도시가 기억하고 있음을 보여준다. 이곳은 유럽에서 가장 현대적인 전기(傳記) 박물관으로 쇼팽과 관련하여 가장 많은 전시품을 보유하고 있다.

관광에 지치는가? 그렇다면 이제 식도락으로 넘어가 보자. 바르샤바에는 수많은 레스토랑과 바들이 밀집해 있다. 가정 특별식으로는 까다로운 입맛을 지닌 관광객까지도 만족시키는 양파, 호밀 수프, 그리고 만두를 넣은 청어가 있다. 디저트로는 바르샤바의 달콤한 상징 중 하나로 크림 케이크인 부제트카, 베델의 핫초콜릿 또는 블리클레의 푹신한 도넛이 있다.

저녁에는 아름답게 리모델링된 대로를 따라 강가를 걷는 것이 가장 좋다. 비스와강은 자연 그대로의 모습을 유지하며 바르샤바를 아주 새로운 모습으로 보일 수 있게끔 만드는 곳이다. 새로 단장한 카페, 바, 야외 콘서트와 더불어 모래사장이 도시의 중심부에 위치하는 동시에 자연과도 매우 가깝다.

자연을 느끼고 싶은 관광객은 도시의 4분의 1을 차지하는 수많은 공원 중 한 곳에서 휴식을 취할 수 있다. 좀 더 활동적인 관광을 선호한다면 자전거 베투릴로를 대여하여 강둑을 따라 달려보는 것도 나쁘지 않다.

바르샤바는 엔터테이닝적인 요소뿐만 아니라 문화를 경험할 수 있는 훌륭한 곳이다. 와지엔키 공원에서는 매주 일요일 12시와 오후 4시에 쇼팽 콘서트가 열리며 올드타운에서는 재즈 애호가를 위하여 7, 8월에 재즈페스티벌이 열린다. 또한 수많은 작품으로 채워진 다양한 전시회가 기다릴 것이다. 끝으로, 분수 공원에서는 봄부터 가을까지 매주 물과 빛을 이용한 아름다운 분수 공연이 열린다.

지금 가방을 싸고 바르샤바로 간다해도 결코 후회하지 않을 것이다.

Warsaw the city that vibrates

Warsaw is a city that is living its second youth. Dynamic, boosting with culture, the capital of Poland is a lively metropolis and a new must see on a tourist map of Europe. There is nothing better than spending a few days in a royal company. Although the times of Polish kings belong to history, one can still find their traces in the city. Start with the Royal Castle, located near the King Sigismund’s Column in the Castle Square. This is the best place to begin a walk along the Royal Route. It is a representative artery connecting royal residences, which leads to the Royal Łazienki – a beautiful summer park of the last Polish king - and then to the Palace in Wilanów. That is where King Jan III Sobieski, the conqueror of Turks in the battle of Vienna resided together with his beloved wife Marysieńka.

Then you can stroll through the narrow and romantic streets of the Old Town, inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the middle of the Old Town Market Square stands a statue of the Warsaw Mermaid, the emblem and guardian of the city.The city is praised for its two famous places: an architectural pearl – Museum of the Polish Jews and interactive, world-class Museum of Warsaw Uprising.

Visiting these places will definitely help you understand the city’s uneasy and turbulent history. Warsaw has something for fine art lovers too: the National Museum with an excellent collection of over 830,000 exhibits from all periods, from antiquity to the present. Masterpieces of Polish and world art are presented in themed galleries.

Do not forget to visit Fryderyk Chopin’s Museum – the composer spent over 20 years of his life in Warsaw and the city remembers it. The museum has the largest collection of memorabilia connected with the composer and is proud to be the most modern biographical museum in Europe.

Tired of sightseeing? Come over and have something to eat. Warsaw offers an enormous choice of restaurants and bars. House specials are herring with onion, rye soup and dumplings which will satisfy even the most demanding palates. For dessert, it is a must to try one of the sweet symbols of Warsaw: a “wuzetka” – a cream cake, a hot chocolate from Wedel, or a fluffy doughnut from Blikle.

In the evening it is best to walk on the riverside along beautifully renovated boulevards. The Vistula river, still wild and natural in many places, gives Warsaw a new face. Cafes, bars, concerts in the open air and real sandy beaches – you will find them all in the heart of the city and yet close to nature.

Those who want to go green can take a rest in one of the numerous parks which cover almost one fourth of the city’s surface. And if you prefer active tourism, there is nothing easier than renting a city bike Veturilo and going on a ride along paths at the river banks.

The capital offers not only excellent entertainment but is also a great place to experience culture. Chopin concerts in Łazienki take place every Sunday at noon and 4 pm all summer long and for jazz lovers there is “Jazz in the Old Town” festival in July and August. Numerous art exhibitions fill in the picture completely. And last but not least: water-light-sound show in the Fountain Park, a spectacular performance happening every weekend from spring till autumn.

So get your suitcase ready and catch the nearest flight to Warsaw. You will not regret.
