[아츠앤컬쳐] 보보바(Bobowa)는 마워폴스카주 중심부, 그림 같은 치엥슈코비체 산기슭의 완만한 언덕들로 둘러싸인 곳에 자리한 작은 마을이다. 지도에서는 폴란드의 그저 조용한 마을처럼 보일지 모르지만, 예술 수공예품 애호가들에게 보보바는 유럽에서 유일무이한 문화유산인 보빈 레이스의 수도로 잘 알려져 있다. 수 세기에 걸쳐 정밀함과 섬세함, 그리고 거의 수학적 완벽함에 가까운 아름다움으로 사람들을 매료시켜 온 이 레이스는 보보바가 간직한 가장 큰 보물이다.

보빈 레이스는 엄청난 인내심뿐 아니라 뛰어난 입체적 감각을 필요로 하는 특별한 기법으로 만들어낸다. 일반적으로 하나의 코바늘이나 한 쌍의 바늘로 작업하는 전통적인 수공예와 달리, 보보바에서는 나무로 만든 여러 개의 보빈(실패)에 리넨, 면, 또는 비단실을 사용한다.

Magic of the Bobbin Lace from Bobowa

In the heart of the Małopolska, among the picturesque hills of the Ciężkowice Foothills, lies the small town of Bobowa. Although it may not appear on the national map as nothing more than a quiet town, to connoisseurs of artistic craftsmanship it is known as the European capital of a unique cultural heritage — bobbin lace. It is from here that Bobowa’s greatest treasure originates, a craft that for centuries has captivated with its precision, delicacy, and almost mathematical perfection.

Bobbin lace is an extraordinary technique, requiring not only immense patience but also a keen sense of spatial imagination. Unlike traditional handicrafts made with a single crochet hook or a pair of knitting needles, in Bobowa the tools of the trade are sets of wooden bobbins, onto which linen, cotton, or silk threads are wound. Masters of this craft are able to manipulate dozens—sometimes even hundreds—of such bobbins simultaneously, all pinned to a special cushion bearing the pattern. The result is an openwork masterpiece reminiscent of spiderwebs, ice crystals, or intricate floral motifs—works that, despite their apparent fragility, are remarkably durable.

The lace-making tradition in Bobowa likely dates back to the 16th century, when the technique arrived in Poland from Italy or Flanders.  A pivotal moment was the founding of the National Lace-Making School in 1899. The institution not only systematized professional training but also helped establish Bobowa as a recognizable brand at international exhibitions, earning medals in cities such as San Francisco and Paris.

Today, this tradition remains very much alive. Contemporary Bobowa is a place where age-old patterns meet modern design. Each year, the town hosts the International Bobbin Lace Festival, bringing together artists from across the continent and serving as a platform for exchanging experiences and showcasing the latest trends in the field.

In an era of mass, machine-based production, Bobowa’s lace serves as a reminder of the authentic value of human craftsmanship. Bobbin lace is an art that does not tolerate haste—creating a single large doily or tablecloth can take an artist hundreds of hours of intense concentration. The inclusion of Bobowa’s bobbin lace-making craftsmanship on Poland’s National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage is a testament to its exceptional value.
