전쟁을 바라보는 또 다른 방식

[아츠앤컬쳐] 우크라이나를 떠올리면 우리는 종종 과거를 먼저 생각하게 된다. 오래된 역사나 공동체, 혹은 문학 속 이야기들이다. 하지만 어떤 나라는 현재를 통해 더 또렷하게 드러나기도 한다. 기록된 과거보다, 지금 지나가고 있는 시간이 더 많은 것을 말해주기 때문일까.

지난 2월, 서초구청에서 열린 한 전시는 그런 시간을 마주하게 하는 계기였다. 전시에는 전쟁의 시작부터 지금까지, 서로 다른 시기에 만들어진 작품들이 놓여 있었고 그것은 하나의 이야기라기보다는, 각자의 순간이 흩어져 있는 장면들에 가까웠다.

어떤 작품은 전쟁이 시작된 날을 담고 있었다. 폭발과 함께 하루가 시작되고, 익숙했던 도시의 풍경이 순식간에 달라지는 순간이다. 또 다른 작품에서는 한 사람이 자신의 삶을 차 한 대에 싣고 떠나는 장면이 등장한다. 그 안에는 물건보다 더 많은 것들이 담겨 있었을 것이다.

시간이 흐르면서, 그림 속 장면들도 조금씩 달라진다. 도시의 건물이 무너지고, 사람들이 몸을 숨기던 공간이 더 이상 안전하지 않게 되는 순간들이 이어진다. 동시에, 일상의 감각이 바뀌는 장면들도 등장한다. 하늘을 나는 드론이 새처럼 보이거나, 언제든 무언가가 떨어질 수 있다는 불안이 자연스러운 감각이 되는 모습이다.

그럼에도 불구하고, 전시 속 이미지들은 한 가지 방향으로만 흐르지 않는다. 아이들이 여전히 살아가고, 누군가는 무언가를 지키고, 또 다른 누군가는 아주 사소한 방식으로 일상을 이어간다. 어떤 장면은 특별할 것 없이 평범해 보이지만, 오히려 그 평범함이 더 낯설게 느껴진다.

이 전시가 인상적이었던 이유는 전쟁을 하나의 사건으로 보여주지 않는다는 점이다. 대신 서로 다른 시간과 감각들이 나란히 놓여 있어 시작의 순간, 떠나는 사람들, 무너진 공간, 그리고 여전히 이어지는 삶까지…그것들을 하나의 결론으로 정리하지 않고, 계속 이어지는 시간처럼 흐르고 있었다.

우리는 전쟁을 흔히 사건으로 기억한다. 그러나 그 안에 있는 사람들에게 전쟁은 하나의 긴 시간에 가깝다. 끝이 보이지 않은 채 계속 이어지는 시간, 그리고 그 안에서 각자의 방식으로 살아가는 순간들이다.

그래서 이 전시는 무엇을 보여주기보다, 어떤 시간을 느끼게 한다. 그리고 그 시간은 단순히 과거가 아니라, 여전히 진행 중인 현재로 남아 있다.

결국 남는 것은 거대한 이야기보다, 그 안에서 이어지고 있는 삶의 방식일지도 모르겠다. 전쟁은 많은 것을 바꾸지만, 삶 자체를 멈추게 하지는 않는다. 다만 그것은 이전과는 다른 속도와 방식으로 계속 이어지는 것이 아닐까.

Another Way of Looking at War

When we think of Ukraine, we often begin with the past—its long history, its communities, or stories preserved in literature. But some places reveal themselves more clearly through the present. Perhaps it is because the time we are living through now says more than what has already been recorded.

Last February, an exhibition held at the Seocho District Office became an occasion to encounter that kind of time. The works on view spanned from the beginning of the war to the present. Rather than forming a single narrative, they felt more like scattered moments, each standing on its own.

Some works captured the very first day of the war. A morning that began with explosions, as a familiar city changed in an instant. Others showed a person packing their entire life into a single car and leaving. What they carried must have been more than just belongings.

As time passes, the scenes begin to shift. Buildings collapse, and places once used for shelter no longer feel safe. At the same time, the sense of everyday life starts to change. Drones in the sky resemble birds, and the possibility of something falling at any moment becomes a natural feeling.

And yet, the images do not move in a single direction. Children continue to grow, someone protects something, and others carry on with small, ordinary routines. Some scenes appear almost uneventful, but that very ordinariness feels unfamiliar in a different way.

What made the exhibition memorable was that it did not present war as a single event. Instead, different moments and sensations were placed side by side—the beginning, those who left, collapsing spaces, and lives that continue. Without being drawn into a conclusion, they remain as a flow of time that goes on.

We often remember war as an event. But for those living within it, war becomes a stretch of time—one that continues without a clear end, shaped by countless individual moments.

That is why the exhibition does not simply show something; it allows us to feel a certain kind of time. And that time is not only in the past—it remains in the present, still unfolding. 

In the end, what lingers may not be the scale of the event, but the ways in which life continues within it. War changes many things, but it does not stop life itself. It simply carries on, in a different rhythm, in a different way.
