[아츠앤컬쳐] 중부 유럽의 유일한 고산 지대인 타트라산맥의 절경은 우리로 하여금 넋을 잃게 한다. 하지만 폴란드에서 가장 매력적인 타트라의 꼭대기에 오르는 것을 떠올리기 전에 우리는 이곳으로 어떻게 갈지 먼저 생각해야 한다. 타트라산맥의 바로 아래에 있는 자코파네에 가기 위해서는 근방의 가장 큰 도시 중 하나로 옛 수도인 크라쿠프(Kraków)에 가야 한다. 자코파네에서 약 100km 정도 떨어진 곳에 위치한 크라쿠프는 포드할레(Podhale) 지역으로 가는 대중교통 수단을 제공한다(대략 2시간 30분 소요).

간혹 자코파네를 단순히 보는 즐거움을 위해서만 가는 곳이라 생각할 수 있으나 몇몇 사람들은 자코파네에서 예술에 대한 지식과 영감을 찾기도 한다. 꽤 많은 사람들이 이곳에서 레크리에이션을 비롯하여 각종 스포츠로 자신의 한계를 시험해보곤 하는데, 자코파네는 고산 지대 사람들로부터 시작하여 약 100년간에 걸쳐 폭발적 인기를 얻어왔다. 이는 자코파네가 의사들과 예술가들의 노력으로 의료 리조트로서뿐만 아니라 문화의 중심지로 성장한 덕분이다.

그러나 사실상 자코파네 인기의 진정한 비결은 물밀듯 들어오는 이주민들을 위한 1899년도의 철도 건설에 있다. 이 시점으로부터 자코파네는 매년 전 세계 수백만 명의 관광객을 끌어들이게 되었다. 자코파네는 관광객에게 여름, 겨울 할 것 없이 사계절에 맞는 볼거리와 액티비티를 제공하고 있다. 그런데 왜 이런 인구의 유입이 있었을까? 유명한 리조트들이 전 세계에 많은데도 불구하고 자코파네가 유독 인기가 많은 것일까?

자코파네는 산에 인접하여 좋은 경관도 있지만 독특한 분위기가 매우 두드러진다. 포드할레의 거의 전 지역이 이런 독특한 분위기를 풍기는데, 구체적으로 목조 건축,디자인, 전통 의상 면에서 특징적이다. 자코파네는 사실상 하나의 추세를 넘어 ‘영혼(spirit)’을 내포하고 있다고 할 수 있다.

고산 지대인들의 민속 문화는 특징이 너무 강하기 때문에 거의 모든 일상생활에서 독특한 점을 엿볼 수 있는데, 예를 들어 자코파네에서는 고산 지대 의상을 걸친 기사가 택시 유형의 마차를 운전한다. ‘자코파네 스타일’의 독특한 건축물과 디자인은 술집뿐만 아니라 다수의 박물관, 상점, 유명 관광지와 더불어 기타 건물들에서도 심심치 않게 찾아볼 수 있다.

또한 자코파네 사람들은 거의 대부분 오스치펙(oscypek) 치즈나 젠트차(żentyca)와 같이 양의 우유로 만들어진 제품을 먹는데, 이는 한번 경험해 볼 만한 진정 색다른 민속 문화이다. 화려하고 다채로운 자코파네는 관광 리조트로서 많은 혜택을 제공한다.

마을 경계 안쪽으로는 수족관, 박물관, 미술관을 비롯하여 레스토랑과 영화관이 자리잡고 있다. 또한 자코파네는 산의 기후를 고려한 자연식 온천 수영장을 개방하고 있다. 스포츠 애호가들은 트레킹, 산악 자전거 및 등산을 할 수 있으며 겨울 스포츠로는 수많은 스키 슬로프를 포함하여 스키 점프가 가능한 장소까지 개방되어 있다. 스노우보드 및 다양한 익스트림 스포츠와 경연대회가 벌어지는 겨울 액티비티들을 고려해 볼 때, 여러분은 자코파네에서의 활동에 대해 큰 그림을 그려볼 수 있을 것이다.

산맥이라는 이름에 맞게, 자코파네에는 거대한 산들이 자리잡고 있다. 시인들과 스포츠맨 모두를 고무시키는 타트라의 기념비는 실제로 유럽 산맥의 보물이라 해도 과언이 아니다. 타트리 자호드니에(Tatry Zachodnie_타트라 서쪽산맥)의 아름다운 산등성이로부터 가장 높은 타트리 비소키에(Tatry Wysokie_타트라 거대 산맥)까지 이어지는 타트라산맥은 250km가 넘는 다양한 트레일을 보유하고 있다. 천천히 즐기며 타는 바이크를 하든, 속도를 필요로 하는 고난도의 바이크를 타든 여러분에게 달려있다. 웅장한 광경을 제공하는 타트라산맥은 관광객 모두에게 열려 있다.

Zakopane – what’s so hot about winter capital?
Tatra mountains, the only alpine mountain range in Central Europe, are truly a sight to behold. However, before we land our feet on the peaks of one of the most attractive tourist regions of Poland, we might first consider its accessibility. To get to Zakopane, central point in Tatra, a town located right underneath its feet, we must first appreciate its closeness to Kraków - former capital, and one of the largest cities in Poland. Kraków, being 100km away, offers transportation to Podhale region in around 2,5 hours.

Some consider Zakopane as pure eye-candy. The others seek knowledge and inspiration in its art. Many pursue a natural struggle, testing their limits in sports and recreation. Every one of them regard of it as legend. Starting as humble highlander village, it simply exploded with popularity during the period of one hundred years. It all began with efforts of valuable physicians and art scholars, thanks to which Zakopane grew not only as medical resort but also as cultural center. A true beginning, however, was after building a railway line in year 1899, opening town’s border for evergrowing amounts of newcomers. At this point, Zakopane draws millions of tourists from all around the world, every year. Adjusted for both summer and winter seasons, the town is basically open for visitors in any time of year.

But why such an influx? Where does this popularity come from? We certainly have many hill resorts all around the world, right? It seems that Zakopane stands out not only because of its proximity of mountains, but also because of its unique atmosphere. It’s noticeable nearly everywhere in Podhale region. Specific, wooden architecture, the design, curiosities and at least, but not last – the outfits. Zakopane is more than a trend, it’s a spirit.

Highlander folk culture is so strong in here, that it is visible in everyday life. We see fiacres on cabs, dressed in highlander clothes. We are surrounded with distinctive “Zakopane style” architecture and design, available not only in numerous museums, but also inside pubs, shops, info points and other structures. And of course – we eat, mostly sheep milk products like oscypek cheese and zentyca. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience, full of colorful folk exposure.

As glamorous and vivid, Zakopane is still a tourist resort, with all its benefits. Inside town’s borders we have aquaparks, museums, galleries, restaurants and cinemas. Exclusively for mountain climates, Zakopane offers natural, thermal swimming pools. For sports enthusiasts, there are many trekking, biking and climbing opportunities. The winter sports, however, are in central spot, with numerous ski slopes with lifts, skitour trails even ski jump objects. Add other winter activities like snowboard, extreme sports and competitions, and you will get a vast picture of what’s happening in Zakopane.

On the literal tip of town’s plan are enormous mountains. Inspiring poets and sportsmen alike, monumental stones of Tatra are indeed jewels of European mountain ranges. Extending from beautiful ridges of Tatry Zachodnie (Western Tatras) to far and gigantic Tatry Wysokie (High Tatras), Tatra offers over 250 km of marked trails of various difficulties. It doesn’t matter if you’re into slow, recreational hike or advanced, demanding course of expedition. With its magnificent sights, Tatras are open for every kind of visitor.
