[아츠앤컬쳐] 아드리아해가 내려다보이는 아름다운 우치카 Učka 산 기슭에 매력적인 엘리트 관광 도시 오파티아 Opatija가 있다. 오파티아에서 강림절 Advent을 지내노라니 동화 같은 풍경이 멋스럽게 눈 앞에 펼쳐진다. 마치 자체 보호의 마법이 작동된 듯 오파티아는 COVID-19 사례가 거의 없이 상당히 안정되어 있다.

필자는 현대무용의 어머니이자 19세기 말과 20세기 초의 여성 문화 아이콘인 이사도라 던컨이 쓴 자서전 ‘My Life’를 손에 들고 그녀가 여러 해 여름을 보냈던 스위트의 발코니에 앉아보았다. 그리고 그녀가 남편인 유명한 러시아 시인 세르게이 알렉산드로비치 예세닌과 함께 야자수를 바라보면서 바람에 부드럽게 흔들리는 잎사귀들의 춤이 그녀의 삶에 영감을 준다고 말했던 이유를 쉽게 이해할 수 있었다.

강림절의 마법 같은 분위기 속에서 던컨의 우아한 조각상이 눈 앞에서 실상으로 춤을 추고 있는 듯하다. 아말리아빌라 Remisens Premium Villa Amalia 앞에 위치한 이 조각품은 “무용수의 몸은 영혼의 빛나는 표현이다.”라는 그녀의 유명한 말을 생각나게 한다. 그녀가 남편 예세닌과의 사이에 주고받은 영감은 이 시대에 가장 창의적인 예술을 만들어내고 수백만 명의 사람들에게 예술과 무용, 시를 감상하도록 영향을 미치지 않았던가!

세계적으로 유명한 이사도라 던컨, 하면 떠오르는 독특한 이미지는 빨간색 실크스카프다. 그를 연상시키는 생생한 붉은 장미색으로 채색된 이사도라와 예세닌의 진실한 삶과 사랑 이야기는 지금 닿을 수 없는 깊은 슬픔에 싸여 있는지도 모른다.

강림절의 저녁, 오파티아의 거리를 장식하는 조명이 하나둘씩 켜지고 크리스마스 분위기를 상징하는 붉은 스카프가 도처에 장식된다. 왜 이 낭만의 도시 오파티아가 매력적인 결혼식이나 신혼여행지로 널리 알려지고 있는지, 삶에서 로맨스와 르네상스를 느끼고자 하는 사람들을 위한 장소가 되는지 그 이유를 쉽게 짐작할 수 있다.

오파티아 음식은 풍미가 근사하다. 와인 또한 매끄럽게 넘어가며 그윽하고 풍성하여 오파티아의 우아함을 잘 반영하고 있다. 펀치를 우려내어 만든 mulled wine은 독특한 향으로 따스하게 감돌며 감각을 자극한다. 현지의 크고 통통한 밤 마루니maruni는 풍부한 향으로 거리를 가득 채우고 현지 별미에 다양하게 쓰인다. 고소한 군밤은 가족과 함께한 어린 시절 사랑하는 친구들과 함께 보낸 훈훈한 크리스마스를 상기시키는 특별한 추억거리이기도 하다.

리부르니아 리베라 Liburnia Rivera 호텔 그룹이 운영하는 호텔 중 하나인 아말리아 빌라의 웰빙 사우나에서 몸과 마음을 완전히 이완시키고 행복한 파라다이스의 기분을 만끽하며 하루를 마감해본다. 필자는 던컨과 예세닌의 유명한 러브스토리를 되새기며 즐긴 이 시간을 통해 오파티아를 다시금 방문하고 싶은 여행지로 오래도록 추억하게 될 것 같다.

Romantic Advent in Opatija

Opatija, a charming elite-tourist Croatian city, sits at the foothills of Učka Mountain, overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Spending Advent in Opatija feels almost like stepping into a fairy tale, and the beauty of the city is a much-needed scenic haven providing a very promising backdrop that can be utilized by the numerous fairy-tales and reality-based stories that we such desperately need, especially now in these troubled corona times. Almost as if under its own protection spell, this city has hardly had any cases of COVID-19 and seems quite protected and safe.

I have in my hand the autobiographical book “My Life” written by Isadora Duncan, the mother of modern dance and a female cultural-icon of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. As I sit on the balcony of the suite named on her behalf, I look across at the palm trees, trying to imagine how she had spent her numerous summer vacations here with her husband, famous Russian poet Sergei Aleksandrovich Yesenin. Watching the fronds sway gently in the wind, it is easy to understand why she used to say that the dance of the palms was her life inspiration.

Amidst the magical atmosphere of Advent, the elegant sculpture of Isadora Duncan virtually dances in front of your eyes. Located in front of the Remisens Premium Villa Amalia, the sculpture brings to life her famous saying: “The dancer's body is simply the luminous manifestation of the soul.” The mutual inspiration that she apparently had with the brilliant Russian love-poet Yesenin has produced the most creative art of this time and influenced millions of other people to appreciate art, dance and poetry. But also, the power of honest love. Maybe there is some truth in the saying that all real loves are wrapped by deep sadness, as Isadora and Yesenin life story suggests. However, it is common wisdom that hearts are made of soft satin and gentle delicate silk, colored the same vibrant red-rose color as the famous red silk scarf that globally profiled Isadora’s astonishing life.

Evenings in Opatija during the Advent shine festively as lights decorating the streets flicker on one by one, and red scarves symbolizing the warmth of Christmas joy appear everywhere. There is an abundance of romanticism in Opatija, and it is easy to see why the city has a widely known image as a highly attractive wedding or honeymoon destination, or just a place for those looking for romance and feeling of renaissance in their life.

It is quite easy to put aside even the most interesting book in the hotel room and soak up this magic atmosphere. The local food is delicious, the wine is silky and opulent, the flavors mirroring the elegance of the whole Opatija Riviera. The scent of the punch and locally famous mulled wine flood your senses with a very special feeling of warmth. The rich aroma of maruni, the plump famous local chestnuts, fills the streets, appearing in many local delicacies or simply roasted, reminding us of our childhood and the warm and soul-touching Christmases spent with our families and dearest friends.
