[아츠앤컬쳐] 지난 5월 9일, 런던의 상징 로열 앨버트 홀에서 크로아티아 출신의 세계적인 첼리스트인 스테판 하우저가 로버트 지글러가 지휘하는 로열 필하모닉 오케스트라와 함께 화려한 클래식 음악의 밤을 선보였다.

이 웅장한 콘서트는 “Rebel with a Cello” 투어의 일환으로, 그의 “Classic II” 앨범의 초연이었다. 콘서트에는 세 명의 주목할 만한 디바로, 미국 바이올리니스트 캐롤라인 캠벨, 소프라노 아이다 가리풀리나, 벨기에 가수 라라 파비안이 특별 게스트로 참여하여 열정과 감동, 에너지가 넘치는 놀라운 공연으로 잊지 못할 밤을 선사했다. 하우저는 지난 2022년에 서울에서 공연한 바 있다.

하우저는 클래식 II 앨범에서 바로크 시대부터 현대에 이르기까지 성악, 피아노, 오보에에 전체 교향악단을 위해 작곡된 멜로디를 선곡했다. 그는 이러한 멜로디를 첼로를 통해 재해석하여 새로운 울림을 선사하고자 하였다.

하우저의 “클래식 II”에 수록된 곡 중 두 곡은 그의 커리어에 깊은 영향을 미쳤다. 첫 번째 곡인 드보르자크의 오페라 ‘루살카’ 중 ‘달의 노래’는 당시 런던에서 첼로를 전공하던 하우저가 찰스 3세(당시 찰스 왕세자)를 위한 버킹엄궁 행사에서 오케스트라 반주로 소프라노 르네 플레밍과 함께 연주하면서 중요한 의미를 갖게 되었다. 이날의 경험은 하우저에게 큰 전환점이 되어 이 곡을 첼로를 위해 편곡하도록 영감을 주었고 악기의 표현 잠재력에 대한 이해를 깊이 하게 되었다.

2CELLOS를 결성하기 전, 하우저는 알비노니의 ‘아다지오’에 감동을 받아 솔로 첼로를 위한 편곡을 하고 유튜브에 동영상을 올렸다. 예상외로 이 영상은 9,100만 조회수를 기록하며 인기를 끌었다. “클래식 II”에서는 이 작품들을 재해석하여 하우저의 세련된 예술성과 런던 심포니 오케스트라의 풍부한 사운드를 선보이고 있다.

Hauser: Magician of the Cello at the Royal Albert Hall

On May 9th, in the iconic Royal Albert Hall in London, the world-renowned Croatian cellist Stjepan Hauser, known professionally as HAUSER staged a spectacular night of classical music with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Robert Ziegler.

This magnificent concert was part of his "Rebel with a Cello" tour, on which he premiered his "Classic II" album. Special guest artists at the concert were three remarkable divas: American violinist Caroline Campbell, soprano Aida Garifullina, and Belgian singer Lara Fabian. It was truly an unforgettable night with an amazing performance full of passion, emotion, and energy. Hauser's last performance in Seoul was in 2022.

In the Classic II album, Hauser selected melodies originally composed for voice, piano, oboe, or even entire symphony orchestras, spanning from the Baroque period to modern times. His objective was to reinterpret these melodies through the cello, allowing them to resonate anew.

Two pieces from Hauser's "Classic II" were profoundly impactful in his career. The first, "Song of the Moon" from Dvořák's opera Rusalka, became significant when Hauser, then a young cello student in London, performed it in an orchestra accompanying soprano Renée Fleming at a Buckingham Palace event for King Charles III (then Prince Charles). This experience was transformative for Hauser, inspiring him to arrange the piece for cello and deepening his understanding of the instrument's expressive potential.

Before forming 2CELLOS, Hauser was moved by the "Adagio" by Albinoni, arranging it for solo cello and launching a video on YouTube. Unexpectedly, the video went viral, amassing 91 million views. In "Classic II," these pieces are reinterpreted, showcasing Hauser's refined artistry and the rich sound of the London Symphony Orchestra.
