Valentine’s Day is a worldwide recognized event celebrating romantic love, and it takes place on February the 14th. Every year couples celebrate their love giving each other roses, chocolate and other romantic gifts.

In Italy, Valentine’s day is a very old tradition. In the past, Valentine’s day was a fest to celebrate the death of the Bishop Saint Valentine from Terni who celebrated a Christian wedding between Sabino and Serapia. Sabino was a pagan Roman soldier who fell in love with Serapia, a devout Christian. Sabino converted to Christianity with Valentine’s guidance. Their story symbolizes eternal love and sacrifice.

In XVII century the reliquia of Saint Valentine was located inside the Basilica of San Valentino in Terni, which nowadays has become a very important spot for love related tourism. Terni hosts several romantic events throughout February, particularly around February 14 with celebrations like concerts or exhibitions dedicated to love.

Couples from all over the world visit Terni to pray to Saint Valentine and ask for his blessing on their love. The Church of San Valentino is an important destination for couples. It’s believed that couples who visit and pray together here are blessed with lasting love. The city even holds a "Valentine's Week", where lovers exchange affection and participate in various romantic events.

Verona, as the city of Romeo and Juliet, is connected to romantic love tradition is, where every year thousands of couples go visiting the house of Juliet, the female protagonist, and write letters asking her to protect their love.

Also Gradara is considered to be the city of love, being the theatre of the romantic tale of Paolo and Francesca. The tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca, immortalized in Dante's Inferno, tells of a love affair between Francesca da Rimini and her brother-in-law Paolo Malatesta. Their affair was discovered by Francesca’s husband, Gianciotto, who murdered them both.
