[아츠앤컬쳐] 프랑스 파리 NIKA Project Space에서 Alexander Ugay의 ‘More than Dreams, Less than Things’展이 3월 16일부터 5월 17일까지 열린다. 미술사학자이자 작가인 엘레나 소로키나가 기획한 이 전시는 소련 시대의 미래적 이미지와 광학의 역사를 바탕으로 기술 발전의 환상과 이미지 제작의 물질성에 의문을 제기한다.

알렉산더 우가이는 한국계 카자흐스탄인으로 사진작가, 비디오 아티스트다. 1937년 강제이주 된 고려인 후손으로 오랫동안 디아스포라의 불확실성, 파괴된 인물, 이주 경로의 기억과 향수에 관한 질문을 자신의 작업을 통해 탐구해 왔다. 그는 시적 과학적 세계에서 사진으로 전자기파 움직임의 스테이션과 양자역학의 역사에 대한 그의 관심을 표현한다. 그의 작품은 구 소련의 필름 카메라와 현대 디지털 녹화 장치를 결합하여 반영한 것이다.

2007년 베니스 비엔날레 이후, 퐁피두센터, 뉴욕 뉴뮤지엄, 스트라스부르 현대미술관, 모스크바 가라지 현대미술관, 스웨덴 룬드 콘스탈, 서울 아트선재센터, 부산현대미술비엔날레 등 세계적인 비엔날레와 국제 프로젝트에 참여했고, 반 아베미술관, 퐁피두센터, 스테델리크박물관, 루블린 라비린트, 카자흐스탄 아스타나와 한국 국립중앙박물관 등의 국제 컬렉션에 작품이 소장되어 있다.

Coming from a Korean diaspora in Kazakhstan, Ugay has long been attentive to the possibilities for understanding of diasporic uncertainties, disrupted figures, and pathways of migrations. In his poetically scientific world, photography can operate as a witness, as a station in the movements of electromagnetic waves, or as manifestation of his interest in the history of quantum mechanics. In his new work produced for the exhibition, the artist interrogates possible parallels between quantum physics and psychoanalysis, in particular, between Lacan’s concept of the signifier and Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle in the act of observation and interpretation. This is the first work of a photo series where the optical laws first described by Abu Ali Al-Hasan function as active structures through which perception itself is shaped.
