Est!! Est!!!

Lacryma Christi

Italian wines sometimes have unusual names, such as the already known Est! Est!! Est!!! Names that recall stories so ancient that they get lost in the mists of time, as it happens for the wine we are introducing now.

A legend tells that when Jesus Christ chased Lucifer away from Heaven for his misdeeds, the disobedient angel stole a piece of Heaven taking it with him. Once he fell to Hell, Lucifer created a chasm where Mount Vesuvius later originated.

Jesus Christ recognized the piece of Heaven stolen by Lucifer in the Gulf of Napoli and He cried so much in pain that His tears gave rise to some beautiful vineyards on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. The wine made with the grapes of those vineyards was called Lacryma Christi, “The tears of Christ”.

According to Aristotle, the great Greek philosopher, some peoples had already planted vines right in the Mount Vesuvius area in the fifth century BCE and later, in Roman times, the poet Marcus Valerius Martialis wrote in his verses that Bacchus, the god of wine, had so loved those luxuriant hilly vines around the volcano.

Beyond what legends claim and what Greek philosophers or Roman poets say, there is something true in their words. The vineyards around Mount Vesuvius rise on a land that has always been known to be very fertile, not so much for the fascinating idea of Jesus Christ’s tears, but for the constant eruptions of the Vesuvius itself that took place over the millennia.

In the so-called House of the Centenary, one of the best-preserved dwellings of ancient Pompeii, a fresco depicting the god Bacchus and the Mount Vesuvius behind him with its top covered with vineyards is still visible, as evidence of how both vines and wines of these places were already renowned at that time.

During the Middle Ages it was the Catholic monks who took care of the vines of Vesuvius and produced Lacryma Christi wine, preserving over the centuries the secret of the extraordinary taste of this wine that has come down to the present day.

Lacryma Christi white wine is made from Coda di Volpe and Falanghina grapes, straw yellow in color with golden hues, intense aroma reminiscent of Vesuvian broom flowers, fruity notes of quince, pineapple and peach. The taste is dry, slightly acid, fullbodied, with pleasant fruity and floral scents. It matches with shellfish, fish soups, seafood risottos, savory pies, fresh cheeses.

Lacryma Christi red wine is made from Piedirosso and Aglianico grapes, with a nice ruby color, a pleasant scent of ripe fruit andspices. The taste is dry, harmonious, full- bodied. Pasta with meat sauces, roasted and game meats, aged cheeses pair with this wine.
