[아츠앤컬쳐] 멋진 토스카나에 위치한 시에나는 이탈리아의 숨결을 느낄 수 있는 작은 도시다. 로마시대에 뿌리를 둔 고대도시로 문화, 역사, 훌륭한 음식이 완벽하게 조화를 이루고 있다. 시에나를 둘러보려면 도심 한가운데에서 시작하면 된다. 시에나 시내는 수세기 동안 손상되지 않고 그대로 남아 있어 마치 중세시대를 보는 듯하며, 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재되어 있다.

도심 중앙에 세계적으로 유명한 조개 모양의 캄포 광장이 있는데, 여기에서 유서 깊은 팔리오 경마대회가 열린다. 중세시대부터 내려온 도시의 17개 동네가 서로 경쟁하는 독특한 경마로 시에나의 가장 중요한 행사다. 이 행사는 14세기 이후로 1년에 두 번 개최되어 왔으며, 먼 옛날 동화 속으로 뛰어들 수 있는 절대 놓칠 수 없는 행사다.

광장 주변에는 도시의 중요한 기념물이 많은데, 시에나의 지붕 너머 숨막히는 전경을 만자탑 꼭대기에서 만끽할 수 있다. 인근에 시청 건물로 쓰이는 코무날레 궁전이 있고, 몇 걸음만 더 가면 두오모 광장에 이르게 된다.

광장에 자리한 산타 마리아 아순타 대성당은 이름에서 알 수 있듯 도시의 또 다른 상징이며, 날렵하고 화려하게 장식된 이탈리아 로마네스크 고딕양식의 완벽한 상징이다. 내부의 바닥은 특히 주의를 기울일 가치가 있는데, 대리석 조각작품은 마치 벽에 그림을 그려놓은 것처럼 고대 신화와 기독교 이야기를 들려주고 있다.

고대로부터 내려온 조리법의 방대한 유산과 고품질의 현지 식재료 덕분에 시에나는 요리 관광의 목적지이기도 하다. 붉은 거리(조나 로쏘)를 걷다 보면 주로 식전으로 먹는 프로슈토와 살라미 소시지 등의 햄과 치즈(예: 시에나 페코리노치즈)의 향에 매료된다.

시내에 있는 전통 선술집은 꼭 방문해야 한다. 여기에서 이 지역의 특산품인 멧돼지 라구로 유명한 피치(스파게티와 유사한 파스타 유형)를 맛볼 수 있다. 시에나 전통 과자도 매우 다양한데, 판포르테(중세에서 유래한 디저트), 카발루치(호두와 설탕에 절인 과일을 넣은 비스킷), 리치아렐리(아몬드를 넣은 과자)를 어디에서나 맛볼 수 있다. 모든 식사에는 도시에서 가까운 포도 농가에서 만든 시에나 키안티 와인을 곁들인다.

Siena

Immersed in the wonderful Tuscan countryside, Siena is a small town where you can breathe Italianity in every street. It is an ancient city, which has its roots in Roman times, where culture, history and good food come together in a perfect mix.

Without a doubt, the visit of Siena can only start from the historic center. Like a photograph of the Middle Ages, the historic center of Siena has remained intact for centuries, a factor that has earned it the inclusion by Unesco in the World Heritage Site. The Historic center includes Piazza del Campo, a shell-shaped square known throughout the world for the famous Palio di Siena. This is the most important event in the city, a one-of-a-kind horse race that sees the seventeen historic districts or neighborhoods located inside the medieval walls compete against each other. The event has normally been held twice a year since the fourteenth century and it is an unmissable opportunity to catapult into a distant and fairy-tale past.

Around Piazza del Campo, there are located numerous important monuments of the city. You can climb the Torre del Mangia, from the top of which you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the rooftops of Siena. Then visit the adjoining Palazzo Comunale completed in 1310, the heart of the city's public life. A few steps more and you will be in Piazza del Duomo, where, as the name suggests, there is another of the symbols of the city: the Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. The Cathedral, built between 1215 and 1563, is a perfect example of an Italian Romanesque-Gothic style building, with a slender and richly decorated appearance. Inside, the floor deserves particular attention, whose marble - carved in a masterly way - tells pagan and Christian stories, as if they were graffiti on the walls.

Siena is also a destination for culinary tourism, thanks to an immense heritage of ancient recipes and local ingredients of the highest quality. Walking through its red streets, you will be attracted by the scent of cold cuts (such as raw ham and salami), and cheeses (such as Sienese pecorino), with which it is customary to start the meal.

A visit to the traditional taverns is a must: here you can try the famous pici (a type of pasta like spaghetti) with wild boar ragù, a true specialty of the area. However, there are also typical sweets: everywhere you can find panforte(a dessert of medieval origin), cavallucci (biscuits with walnuts and candied fruit) and ricciarelli (sweets with almonds). Obviously, every meal is accompanied by Sienese Chianti wine, made in the vineyards nearby the city.
