[아츠앤컬쳐] 산과 언덕으로 둘러싸인 루카는 아푸아니 산자락에 자리잡은 토스카나주에서 가장 흥미로운 구경거리가 많은 도시 중 하나다. 피사와 베르시리아 사이에 위치해 있으며 도시를 구성하는 많은 수의 종교 건물들로 인해 이탈리아에서 “성당 100개의 도시”로 널리 알려져 있다. 보존 상태가 우수한 총 4km의 르네상스 시대 성곽은 루카시를 찾는 사람들에게 하나의 거대한 요새로 느끼게 한다. 초록 잔디를 둘러싼 성벽과 함께 성벽을 따라 심어진 가로수길은 도보 산책과 자전거를 타고 바람 쐬기에 좋은 코스로 알려져 있다.

성벽은 수 세기 동안 루카시의 건축 유산을 보존하는 역할을 해 왔다. 구도심지의 골목길과 회랑 그리고 탑은 중세와 르네상스 시대 모습을 훼손 없이 그대로 잘 간직하고 있어 루카는 토스카나 주에서 가장 아름다운 예술도시 중 하나로 여겨진다. 루카에서 탑은 중세 시대에 가문의 권력을 나타내는 상징물로 수 많은 탑들이 세워졌던 것으로 기록된다. 오늘날에 이르러 많은 수의 탑이 사라졌지만 여전히 루카를 대표하는 몇 개의 탑이 남아있다. 그 중 탑 꼭대기에 푸른 나무가 자라는 정원을 가진 귀니지 탑(Torre Guinigi)은 방문객에게 멋진 전경을 선사하여 여행자들의 명소로 널리 알려져 있다.

다른 명소로는 로마 시대의 원형극장 모양을 따온 안피테아트르 광장이 있다. 노을이 지는 시간대에 안피테아트르 광장을 방문한다면 곡선 모양으로 지어진 노란 건물과 일 층에 줄지어 있는 식당과 가게의 낭만적인 풍경과 분위기에 취해볼 수 있다. 광장 근처에는 루카의 상업 중심지인 피룬고(Via Filungo) 거리가 있다. 특산품 구입과 루카시만의 향토 음식을 먹어보고 싶다면 이곳을 찾아가면 된다.

루카 요리는 기본적으로 농민들의 식단에 기반을 둔다. “토르델리(tordelli)”는 루카를 방문하면 가장 많은 추천을 받는 요리로 반달 모양으로 빚은 속을 채운 반죽 요리로 우리나라의 만두와 비슷한 요리다. 하지만 루카를 대표하는 음식은 아마도 “부첼라토(buccellato)”일 것이다. 이탈리아에는 “루카에 와서 부첼라토를 먹지 않은 사람은 루카를 방문하지 않은 것이다”라는 말이 있을 정도로 루카를 대표하는 요리다. 부첼라토는 아니스 풀로 맛을 낸, 혼동할 수 없는 향을 가진 부드러운 도너츠 모양의 빵이다.

루카는 다양한 문화행사 개최지로도 다른 도시와 차별화된다. 루카는 매년 10월 이탈리아에서 가장 중요한 ‘만화와 애니메이션 축제’인 Lucca Comics & Games가 열린다. 중세 도시에 있는 듯한 느낌을 주는 루카는 Lucca Comics & Games에서처럼 SF무대 장소로도 많이 사용된다. 여름에는 ‘루카썸머페스티벌’을 열어 세계적으로 인지도 있는 아티스트들의 공연도 선보여 일년내내 활기 넘치는 도시 면모를 보이고 있다.

LUCCA

Lucca is one of the most interesting cities of Tuscany to discover. The city enjoys a natural setting, surrounded by mountains and hills, it is located at the foot of the Apuan Alps halfway between Pisa and Versilia in central Italy.

The city, also known as the City of 100 churches thanks to the many places of worship that characterize it, looks like a real fortified island with its walls. The 4-kilometer-long walls are exceptionally well preserved and nowadays have become a major pedestrian area perfect for leisurely strolls. To make the place even more pleasant, a green lawn and trees arranged along all the walls, create a park around the town where it is possible to take a nice walk or bike tour.

The walls have protected an incredible heritage for centuries. Lucca is in fact one of the most beautiful Tuscan cities. Most of the attractions have kept the medieval character with alleys, cloisters and towers. In the Middle Ages the towers were a real and true "business card" that testified to the power of a family through height and it seems that Lucca was full of them. To date, however, few towers remain, including the Guinigi Tower, symbol of the city, at the top of which you can see a garden complete with trees and from up there you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the whole territory of the plain. There are several legacies of ancient history to be admired, in particular the iconic Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, whose shape follows that of an ancient Roman amphitheater. Here the yellow buildings surprisingly follow the curvature of the amphitheater and on the ground floor we find shops and restaurants that create a romantic atmosphere especially at sunset.

Nearby we also find via Filungo, a commercial street of Lucca, where the long time presence of artisanal activities, make the city lively and where it is possible to buy local products, especially genuine local food.

As far as gastronomy is concerned, Lucca's cuisine is rooted mainly in the peasant tradition. The "tordelli" are one of the most recommended dishes for a stay in Lucca. It is a type of half-moon shaped filled pasta. However, the most representative dish of the city is the "buccellato", so famous that there is even a proverb "whoever comes to Lucca and does not eat buccellato is as if he had never been there". Buccellato is a soft donut-shaped bread flavored with aniseed and with a recognizable fragrance.

The city also stands out in several cultural events, becoming a hotbed of ideas. Thanks to the medieval character Lucca has become a real fantasy scenario. Every year in October it welcomes Lucca Comics & Games, one of the most important fairs dedicated to comics and animation, a series of festive days where one of the most awaited appointments is certainly the one with cosplayer costumes. Moreover in summer, the Lucca Summer Festival hosts some of the most famous international rock-pop band and musicians to perform.

Easily accessible by public transportation, Lucca for sure is a destination to be included as you visit Tuscany.
