[아츠앤컬쳐] 베네치아는 살아 약동하는 도시이며 동시에 그 전체가 열린 박물관이다. 베네치아를 구성하는 100여개 이상의 섬들은 다리로 연결되어 있으며 또 섬 사이사이에 있는 운하는 보트와 곤돌라가 다니는 수상 도로의 역할을 한다. 베네치아의 가장 독특한 양상은 자동차가 다닐 수가 없기 때문에 시내 중심가에서는 걸어 다니거나 옛 사적지를 일주하고 대운하를 왕래하는 수상 버스나 모터보트를 타야 한다는 점이다.
이탈리아 반도에서 가장 로맨틱한 도시로 무한한 매력이 넘쳐나는 베네치아와 그 운하 지역은 오늘날 이탈리아에서 관광객이 가장 많이 찾는 곳 중 하나다. 또 몽환적 분위기를 지닌 도시로서 카니발과 베니스 영화제 및 비엔날레를 비롯한 많은 유명 행사가 열리는 곳이기도 하다. 그리고 카르파초, 벨리니, 조르조네, 티치아노, 틴토레토, 베로네세, 티에폴로, 과르디 등 수많은 유명 화가들의 작품과 박물관, 성당, 궁전, 회랑, 운하 위 다리를 가로지르는 풍경들로 가득한 곳이다.
배네치아의 심장부는 산 마르코 광장이다. 산 마르코 광장은 뛰어난 다문화성을 보여주는 베네치아의 상징이다. 사다리꼴 형태의 광장 주변으로는 바실리카(산마르코대성당), 종탑, 두칼레 궁전 등 온통 가치를 헤아릴 수 없는 건축물들로 즐비하다. 그중 로마, 비잔틴, 베네치아 문명의 유산인 바실리카는 머나먼 동방에서 온 예술품들로 장식되어 있다. 특히 바실리카 내부에 놓여 있는 산 마르코(성 마가)의 네 마리 말 조각상은 콘스탄티노플에서 가져온 것으로 원래 테라스 위에 위치하던 것이다. 산 마르코 광장의 또 다른 유명한 볼거리인 시계탑은 쇼핑을 위한 상점들이 즐비한 세 개의 상점가 메르체리에로 연결된다. 광장에는 역사 깊은 두칼레 궁전의 비밀스런 공간들을 엿볼 수 있는 관람 프로그램도 있다.
베네치아를 여행할 때는 유리 가공으로 명성을 자랑하는 무라노와 아름답게 채색된 건물들이 즐비한 유명한 레이스 생산지 부라노도 절대 놓쳐서는 안 된다.
놀라운 예술품들 외에도 베네치아는 일년 내내 다양한 행사들로 가득한 곳이다. 2월의 베네치아 카니발은 가장 중요하고 오래된 축제 중 하나다. 이 축제는 수세기 전 시민들의 여흥을 위해 탄생했다. 카니발 기간 중 베네치아를 방문한다면 그 기회를 빌어 18세기 귀족 여인이나 유명했던 예술가 카사노바의 의상을 입어볼 수도 있다. 카니발 의상은 무척이나 아름다워서 우아하고 사치스러운 분위기에 흠뻑 젖어볼 수 있다. 카니발 다음으로는 가장 중요한 국제 행사 중 하나인 베네치아 예술 비엔날레가 열린다. 비엔날레는 원래 조형예술품 전시를 위해 탄생했으나 오늘날에는 음악, 연극, 건축, 무용, 영화에 이르기까지 모든 형태의 표현 예술을 위한 축제가 되었다. 특히 베네치아 국제 영화제는 세계에서 가장 역사가 오래된 영화제로서 지금은 매년 서울에서도 베니스 영화제에서 수상한 우수한 이탈리아 영화들을 ‘베니스 인 서울’이라는 타이틀로 한국 관객에게 소개하고 있다.
먹거리와 관련해서 베네치아는 항구 도시인만큼 바칼라(건조한 대구) 등 해산물 요리를 쉽게 맛볼 수 있고, 또한 이 지역이 유명한 전통적 와인 생산지이기 때문에 최고 품질의 와인을 함께 곁들이기도 한다. 최고의 베네치아 요리를 맛보려면 바카로(bàcaro)라는 오래된 전통 식당 겸 와인바에 가서 치케티(cicchetti)로 불리는 핑거 푸드를 먹어봐야 한다. 이런 식당은 도시 어디에나 있기 때문에 관광 중에 잠시 쉴 수 있는 장소로도 이상적이다.
Venice, the city on the water
Venice is a lively and vibrant city as well as an immense open-air museum. It is an incredible city, built on over 100 islands joined by bridges and separated by canals that serve as roads, crossed by boats and gondolas. The most peculiar aspect of the city is that in the center cars are not allowed: people have to go on foot, or use motorboats and vaporetto (water buses), which circumnavigate the historic center or travel along the Grand Canal.
The city of Venice and its entire lagoon constitute a suggestive territory. Known as the most romantic city on the peninsula, it is one of the most visited places in Italy to this day. The city's dreamy atmosphere is also the backdrop for well-known events, including the Carnival, the Biennale Film and Art Festival and many others. The art of this city that bears the names of Carpaccio, Bellini, Giorgione and Tiziano, Tintoretto and Veronese, Tiepolo and Guardi is filled with museums, churches, palaces, loggias, and breath-taking views on the lagoon.
The heart of Venice is Piazza San Marco, a symbol of Venice and a multicultural environment par excellence. A square with a trapezoidal shape with priceless artworks all around: from the Basilica, to the bell tower, to the Doge's Palace. The Basilica represents the legacy of Roman, Byzantine and Venetian culture, embellished and adorned with artifacts from the farthest lands of the East. Inside the basilica are the Four Horses of San Marco, sculptures from Constantinople originally positioned on the terrace. Another tourist attraction is the Clock Tower, in the central square, which leads to the three shopping streets known as the "mercerie". Palazzo Ducale is located in Piazza San Marco, and it contains the entire history of the city and also offers some secret itineraries.
In addition, you cannot visit Venice without going to Murano, a famous island for its renowned glass-making and Burano, with its colorful houses, a famous place for the production of lace.
In addition to the artistic wonders, Venice is a city full of activities all year round. In the month of February one of the most important and ancient festivals takes place, the Carnival of Venice. The festival was born many centuries ago to give the population a moment of fun. Visiting Venice at Carnival is a unique opportunity to wear the clothes of an eighteenth-century lady or of the famous Casanova. Venetian Carnival dresses are wonderful and manage to catapult you into an atmosphere of luxury and elegance. After the Carnival, one of the most important international events in the world is the Venice Biennale of both Art and Film. Born to welcome works of figurative art, today the Biennale is dedicated to every artistic expression: from music to theatre, through architecture and dance, up to the cinema, with the Venice International Film Festival, the oldest world film festival. It is yearly presented in Seoul, where the best Italian films are acknowledged and rewarded.
As for gastronomy, being a seaside city, it is easy to find fish-based dishes such as cod, accompanied by excellent wines since the region is also renowned for its winemaking traditions. To better enjoy the true Venetian cuisine it is typical to go to the "bàcari", ancient taverns where you eat cicchetti, small snacks. These places are scattered throughout the city and become an ideal place for a break between one visit and another.
