[아츠앤컬쳐] 크로아티아 아드리아해의 기다란 해안선은 수천 개의 섬이 있는 놀라운 군도의 자랑스러운 고향이다. 또한, 많은 섬들은 이 지역의 풍부한 역사에서 중대한 사건의 배경이 되었다. 이 섬들과 작은 만의 광대한 네트워크는 외해의 치명적인 폭풍으로부터 피난처를 제공하고 있기 때문에 유럽과 아시아의 횡단 시 선호하는 해상 경로이다. 이 그림 같은 항구에서 해적들과 폭풍으로부터 피난처를 찾은 뱃사람들의 이야기가 많은데, 그중 한 특별한 인물의 이야기는 분명 로쿠룸섬 최고의 영광이라 할 만하다.

유명한 도시 두브로브니크 앞에는 작은 로쿠룸섬이 있다. 지금은 무성한 식물원과 화려한 공작의 본거지인 이곳은 1192년에 잠시 사자왕 리차드로 더 잘 알려진 영국 왕 리차드 1세의 피난처가 되기도 했다. 제3차 십자군 전쟁에서 활약하고 본국으로 돌아가는 긴 여정 중에, 그 전쟁의 폭력성은 하늘까지 뒤덮은 것처럼 보였고, 번개와 천둥의 폭풍 속에서 그의 배들은 간신히 작은 로쿠룸 섬에 이르렀다. 이튿날 아침, 해가 뜨고 이 섬의 향기로운 소나무 숲, 풍부한 동식물, 그리고 청록색 바다가 더할 나위 없는 아름다움을 드러냈을 때, 전사 왕은 이 안식처의 평화로움을 목도하고 경외감에 휩싸였다.

리차드왕의 소식을 들은 두브로브니크 공화국의 12명의 대표단이 왕을 영접하기 위해 로쿠룸에 도착했다. 그리고 리차드왕과 그의 병사들이 영국으로 안전한 귀국 준비를 하는 동안 명예로운 귀빈으로서 도시에 머물도록 초대했다. 여기에 호의를 더하여 유명한 아르고시 선박 한 척으로 이탈리아 해안에 이르러, 그들이 유럽을 계속 횡단할 수 있게 도왔다.

전설에 따르면 사자왕 리차드는 감사의 뜻으로 두브로브니크 공화국에 10,000개의 금화를 선물하여 그를 추모하는 교회를 세웠다고 한다. 따라서 이 교회는 파도에 휩쓸린 모든 선원들을 위한 피난처가 되었다. 축복받은 성모 마리아를 기리는 로마네스크 성당이 도시 성벽 안에 새로이 지어졌지만, 안타깝게도 1667년 지진으로 파괴되었다. 그 자리는 다시 두브로브니크 대성당이 세워져 유네스코에 등재되고 두브로브니크 구시가지의 문화적이고 역사적인 본보기가 되고 있다.

리차드 1세는 역사를 통틀어 로쿠룸 섬을 방문한 왕족, 세계 지도자, 그리고 중요한 인물들 중 한 명에 불과하다. 흥미롭게도, 이 섬은 엄청나게 성공을 거둔 TV 쇼 <왕좌의 게임> 시즌 2에 나오는 콰스(Qarth)시의 촬영지로서 작품 속 가상의 군주들을 초대하기도 했다. 오늘날, 로쿠룸 섬은 11세기 베네딕토 수도원의 유적, 성과 요새, 아름다운 빌라, 그리고 웅장한 지중해 식물원의 터전인 보물 창고이다.

그 중 가장 가치 있는 보석은 천 년 된 풍부한 올리브 숲인데, 지난 역사와 명성을 즐기는 방법의 하나로 방문객들이 신선한 올리브를 따 보도록 권한다. 그렇기에 자연의 고요함을 즐기든 위대한 발자취를 따라 걷든, 로쿠룸 섬은 아드리아해 왕실의 푸른 천으로 너무나 완벽하게 짜여진, 그래 영국에서 가장 유명한 십자군 군주의 심장마저 무장 해제시킨 진정 독특한 낙원이라 할 수 있다.

Lokrum Island and King Richard the Lionheart

The extensive coastline of the Croatian Adriatic is the proud home of stunning archipelagos with thousands of islands, many of which have been the settings of momentous events in the extraordinarily rich history of this area. The vast network of islands and coves also provided shelter from the deadly storms of the open seas, thus becoming a preferred sea-route traversing between Europe and Asia. Though stories of mariners finding sanctuary from pirates and tempests alike in these picturesque harbours are plentiful, the story of one particular sailor must certainly be the crowning glory.

Nestled in the shadows of its famous neighbouring City of Dubrovnik, there lies a miniscule island called Lokrum. Now home to lush botanical gardens and colourful peafowl, in the 12^th century it was also briefly the refuge of King Richard I of England, better known as Richard the Lionheart, in 1192. Whilst on the long journey home from fighting in The Third Crusade, it seemed that the violence of these wars had spread to the skies themselves, and in a storm of lightning and thunder his ships found their way to none other than little Lokrum. When the next morning’s sun had risen and uncovered the immaculate beauty of the island’s aromatic pine forest, the plethora of flora and fauna, and turquoise waters, the warrior King himself was awed by the peace of this haven.

Hearing of his arrival, a delegation of 12 members of the Dubrovnik Republic authority arrived in their dominion of Lokrum to greet the King and invited him to stay in The City as their honoured guest, while he and his soldiers prepared for their safe return to England. As a further act of goodwill, Dubrovnik commissioned one of its famous argosy ships to transport him to the Italian coast, from where he could continue his trek across Europe.

Legends say that in his gratitude, Richard Lionheart gifted 100,000 gold coins to the Dubrovnik Republic to put towards building a church in his memory, which would serve as a beacon of shelter for all sailors caught in the unruly waves. Accordingly, the new Romanesque Basilica in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built within the city walls, though it was sadly destroyed during an earthquake in 1667. Nevertheless, the still-standing Dubrovnik Cathedral was built in its place, which in addition to being under UNESCO protection, is a cultural and historical paragon of Dubrovnik’s Old City.

King Richard I is but one of the scores of royalty, world leaders, and important figures who have visited Lokrum throughout history. Interestingly, the island has even played host to fictional monarchs, as the filming location for the city of Qarth in season two of the immensely successful TV show Game of Thrones. Today, the island is a treasure trove, home to ruins of the 11^th century Benedictine monastery, castles and fortresses, beautiful villas, and the magnificent Mediterranean botanical gardens.

Perhaps the most valuable gem is the bountiful thousand-year-old olive grove where visitors are encouraged to pick fresh olives from the same trees as those enjoyed by the historical cascade of eminence before them. Thus, whether it is to bask in the tranquility of nature or to walk in the footsteps of greatness, Lokrum is a truly unique paradise woven so perfectly into the royal blue fabric of the Adriatic that it even disarmed the heart of England’s most famous crusading monarch.
