[아츠앤컬쳐] 헝가리에는 약 2천 개의 성이 있으며, 이는 모두 한때 헝가리 귀족들의 거주지였다. 각 성은 저마다의 풍부한 역사를 지니고 있으며, 그중 몇몇 성은 성주, 거주자, 그리고 매혹적인 역사로 다른 성보다 더욱 인기가 많다. 헝가리에서 가장 크고 아름다운 바로크 양식의 성으로 ‘헝가리의 베르사유’라고도 불리는 에스테르하자는 헝가리 서부 페르토드에 있다. 가장 인기 있는 명소는 300ha 규모의 공원과 126개의 방이 있는 바로크 양식의 복합 단지다. 이 나라의 위대한 귀족은 물론, 유명한 작가와 국가대표 축구선수를 배출한 에스테르하지 가문의 저택은 아마도 가장 호화로운 저택이었을 것이다.

유명 작곡가 요제프 하이든은 후원자인 미클로스 에스테르하지를 위해 거의 20년을 이곳에서 보냈다. 이 성의 문화적 역할은 여전히 중요하며, 음악적 전통을 이어가고 흥미로운 클래식 음악 콘서트와 행사 장소로 쓰인다. 전성기에는 성에 자체 오페라하우스가 있었을 뿐만 아니라 오스트리아의 여제이자 헝가리의 여왕 마리아 테레지아도 수시로 이곳을 방문했다. 그녀는 “좋은 오페라를 듣고 싶을 때면 에스테르하자로 간다”고 말한 바 있다.

역사적으로 중요한 또 다른 성은 부다페스트 바로 옆의 괴될뢰성이다. 이 성은 헝가리 국가가 프란츠 요제프 1세와 시시라고도 불리는 엘리자베스 여왕에게 대관식 선물로 주었다. 이 성은 주로 봄가을에 괴될뢰에 머물렀던 왕실 부부의 휴식처가 되었다. 엘리자베스는 헝가리 혁명가이며 훗날 헝가리 총리이자 오스트리아-헝가리 왕정의 외무장관인 안드라시 백작과 이곳에서 여러 차례 만났다는 소문이 있었다. 둘 사이에 로맨틱한 관계가 발전했다고 하는데, 엘리자베스가 유럽에서 가장 아름다운 여인이었고 안드라시도 당대 최고의 미남이었다고 하니 그다지 놀랄 일도 아니다.

헝가리를 계속 여행하다 보면 곧 역사주의 시대 헝가리에서 가장 아름다운 건물 중 하나인 나다스디 성에 도착한다. 네오 고딕 튜더 양식의 나다스디 성은 중부 유럽에서 보기 드문 건축물이다. 현지인들에 따르면 성 공원의 철문은 케이트 베킨세일 주연의 할리우드 시리즈 ‘언더월드’를 위해 만들어졌으며, 성 안 좌석의 덮개와 그랜드 살롱의 커튼은 호평을 받은 ‘더 보르지아’ 시리즈를 촬영하는 동안 새롭게 단장되었다고 한다.

오늘날 우리는 이 성들의 제2의 전성기를 목격하고 있지만, 제2차 세계대전과 그 후의 사회주의 시대에는 고통스러운 운명을 겪었다. 전쟁에서 파괴되지 않은 성들은 약탈당했고, 대부분은 60년~70년대에 부적절한 기능을 부여받았다. 헝가리는 역사와 건축 유산을 보존하기 위해 30개의 성과 요새를 개조하여 관광 및 문화 목적으로 사용하기로 결정했다. 현재 성의 기능은 박물관, 문화 센터, 심지어는 귀족의 삶을 체험할 수 있는 일류 호텔까지 다양하다.

투라성은 1883년에 지어져 루아르성을 연상시키는 네오 르네상스 양식이며, 티스도브의 언드라시성은 프랑스 루아르 강변의 중세 기사 성을 모델로 하여 헝가리 엘리자베스 여왕을 기리기 위해 지은 로마네스크 양식의 성이다. 바로크 양식의 카롤리이 성, 루이리에-코부르크성 등과 함께 19세기 귀족 생활의 분위기를 경험하고 싶은 여행객들에게 수준 높은 관광 서비스를 제공하고 있다.

Hidden Castles in the Hungarian countryside

There are nearly two thousand castles in Hungary, all of which were once the homes of the Hungarian aristocracy. Although each has its own rich history, some of these are more popular with tourists than others, mostly because of their owners, dwellers and captivating history. Hungary's largest and most beautiful Baroque castle, also known as the "Hungarian Versailles", is located in Fertőd, Western Hungary, but is also called Esterháza. One of the most popular attractions is a 126-room baroque complex with a 300-hectare park. The home of the former Esterházy family, which gave the country not only great nobles but also famous contemporary writers and national soccer players, was probably the most luxurious residence.

Famous composer Joseph Haydn spent almost two decades here in the service of Miklós Esterházy, who was a patron of the arts. The cultural role of the castle is still significant, continuing the musical tradition and providing a venue for exciting classical music concerts and events. In its heyday, the castle not only had its own opera house, but even Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, visited from time to time. She once said, "When I want to hear good opera, I go to Eszterháza.”

The other, probably the most historically significant castle is located in Gödöllő, right next to Budapest. The castle was a coronation gift from the Hungarian state to Franz Joseph I and Queen Elisabeth, also known as Sissi. The castle became the resting place of the royal couple, who stayed in Gödöllő mainly in spring and fall. It is rumored that Elisabeth met here several times with Count Andrássy, who was a Hungarian revolutionary, later prime minister of Hungary and foreign minister of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. It is said that a romantic relationship developed between the two of them, which is not surprising since it was said that Andrássy was the most handsome man of his time, just as Elisabeth was the most beautiful woman in Europe.

Continuing our journey through Hungary, we soon arrive at Nádasdy Castle, one of the most beautiful Hungarian buildings of the Historicism period. Its neo-Gothic Tudor style is a rarity in Central Europe. According to the locals, the iron gates of the castle park were made for Underworld, the Hollywood series starring Kate Beckinsale, filmed here, while the upholstery of the seats in the castle and the curtains in the grand salon were renewed during the filming of the highly acclamied The Borgias series.

Although today we are witnessing the second heyday of these castles, their fate was agony during the Second World War and the following socialist era. Those that were not destroyed in the battles were plundered and most of them were given inappropriate functions in the 60s and 70s. In order to preserve our history and architectural heritage, the Hungarian state decided to renovate 30 castles and fortresses and use them for tourist and cultural purposes. The mix of the current functions of the castles widely ranges from museums, cultural centers or some of them even first class hotels where you can experience what the life of the nobility was like.

Castles such as Tura, a neo-Renaissance castle built in 1883 and reminiscent of Loire castles, and Andrássy Castle in Tiszdob, a Romanesque castle said to have been built in honor of Queen Elisabeth of Hungary and modeled after the medieval knightly castles along the Loire in France, were part of the renovation program. Together with the baroque Károlyi and L'Huillier-Coburg castles and many others, they are now at the service of quality tourism for those who want to experience the atmosphere of 19th century aristocratic life.
