[아츠앤컬쳐] 두기 오톡(Dugi Otok, “긴 섬”이라는 뜻)은 크로아티아 달마티아 해안 앞바다, 아드리아해의 자다르 군도 가장 바깥쪽에 위치해 있다. 길이가 44km에 달하며 북부 달마티아에서 가장 큰 섬이다. 섬은 자다르 항구에서 브르비니(Brbinj), 보자바(Božava), 혹은 섬의 행정 중심지인 살리(Sali)까지 정기 운항하는 페리나 쾌속선으로 쉽게 갈 수 있다. 섬에 도착하면 아름다운 해안 도로가 11개의 마을을 연결하며, 그 길에서 바다와 주변 군도의 탁 트인 풍경을 감상할 수 있다.

두기 오톡에는 구석기 시대 블락노 동굴(Vlakno Cave) 유적, 일리리아 시대의 언덕 요새, 로마 시대 저택 등 다양한 고고학적 유물이 발견되어 있어 선사시대부터 사람이 거주해온 역사를 보여준다. 섬의 깊이 있는 역사는 텔라쉬치짜(Telašćica)의 성 빅토르 교회(St. Victor), 살리(Sali)의 성 요한 교회(St. John) 등 5세기까지 거슬러 올라가는 초기 기독교 교회들에서 엿볼 수 있다. 살리는 글라골 문자 비문과 승천 성모 교회의 바로크식 제단으로도 유명하며, 풍부한 종교적·건축적 유산을 간직하고 있다. 또한 전통 축제를 통해 활기찬 문화가 이어지고 있는데, 특히 ‘살리스케 우쟌쩨(Saljske užance)’라는 축제가 유명하다. 이 축제는 당나귀 경주, 전통 음악, 해산물 잔치로 이어지는 3일간의 큰 행사다. 여름철에는 섬의 11개 마을 각각에서 마을 수호 성인을 기리는 축제가 열리며, 음악과 음식, 따뜻한 공동체가 어우러져 지역 문화를 생생하게 느낄 수 있다.

섬의 남동쪽에는 두기 오톡의 가장 상징적인 풍경으로 꼽히는 텔라쉬치짜 자연공원(Nature Park Telašćica)이 자리한다. 이곳에는 높이 약 200미터에 달하는 장엄한 해식 절벽이 펼쳐지며, 고요한 내륙 분지에는 치유 효과가 있다고 알려진 염호 미르 호수(Lake Mir)가 자리한다. 텔라쉬치짜 만은 아드리아해에서 가장 안전하고 경치가 아름다우며 규모가 큰 천연 항구로 꼽힌다. 만의 69km에 이르는 구불구불한 해안선에는 6개의 작은 섬, 절벽, 25개의 작고 아늑한 만이 있어 요트 여행자들에게 인기 있는 정박지다. 이 지역은 희귀 식물, 매(Falcon), 그리고 자유롭게 돌아다니는 당나귀 등 다양한 생물들이 서식하는 생태 보고이기도 하다.

섬 북서쪽에는 새하얀 모래와 에메랄드빛 얕은 바다, 소나무 숲 그늘이 어우러져 가족 여행객이나 일광욕객에게 인기 있는 사카룬 해변(Sakarun)이 있다. 인근 보쟈바 마을(Božava)은 조용한 바닷가 풍경으로 매력을 더하며, 벨리 랏(Veli Rat)에는 아드리아해에서 가장 높은 등대가 있다. 높이 42미터의 푼타 비얀짜(Punta Bjanca) 등대에서는 숙박도 가능해, 바다 곁에서 고요함을 만끽하고자 하는 이들에게 특별한 경험을 선사한다.

살리스코 폴례(Saljsko Polje)의 올리브 숲에는 수령 700년이 넘는 올리브 나무들이 자생하며, 그 규모와 나이에서 오는 독특함으로 지역의 중요한 생태·역사 유산으로 꼽힌다. 이 숲은 역사적 가치와 원예학적 가치 모두를 인정받아 아드리아 해안의 식물 보호구역으로 지정되어 있다.

두기 오톡의 다채로운 지형은 탐험과 모험을 즐기기에 더없이 좋다. 잔잔한 만과 탁 트인 바다는 요트와 카약 타기에 적합하며, 다이빙 스쿨에서는 메쟌(Mežanj)과 브르빈슈치짜(Brbinjšćica) 인근의 해저 동굴이나 난파선을 탐험할 기회를 제공한다. 보다 느긋한 여행을 원하는 이들은 눈부신 자연 풍광 속에서 해안가 낚시를 즐길 수 있다. 또, 가이드와 함께 등산, 야생 동물 관찰, 코르나티 국립공원(Kornati National Park)으로 떠나는 섬 투어도 가능하다. 자전거 코스는 올리브 숲과 포도밭, 고대 유적지를 누비며 이어진다.

Discovering Dugi Otok 

Dugi Otok (meaning “Long Island”) is situated on the outer edge of the Zadar archipelago in the Adriatic Sea, off Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. Stretching over 44 km, it is the largest island in northern Dalmatia. The island is easily accessible by ferry or catamaran, with regular departures from Zadar’s port to Brbinj, Božava, or Sali, the island’s administrative centre. Once there, a scenic road links all eleven villages, offering sweeping views of the sea and surrounding archipelago.

Dugi Otok has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by archaeological findings from the Paleolithic Vlakno Cave, Illyrian hillforts, and Roman estates. The island’s layered history is reflected in early Christian churches such as St. Victor in Telašćica and St. John in Sali, some dating as far back as the 5th century. Sali, with its Glagolitic inscriptions and baroque altar in the Church of the Assumption, preserves a rich spiritual and architectural legacy. Cultural life thrives through traditional festivals, most famously Saljske užance, a three-day celebration featuring donkey races, folk music, and seafood feasts. During the summer months, each of the island’s eleven villages hosts lively festivals, often held in honour of their local patron saint. These celebrations bring local customs to life through music, food, and the warmth of community gatherings.

The southeastern part of the island is home to Nature Park Telašćica, a protected area often regarded as Dugi Otok’s most iconic landscape. Here, dramatic sea cliffs soar nearly 200 meters above the waves, while Lake Mir, a saltwater lake with healing properties, rests in a quiet inland basin. Telašćica Bay is considered one of the Adriatic’s safest, most scenic, and largest natural harbours. Its deeply indented 69-kilometre coastline includes six islets, striking cliffs, and 25 sheltered coves, making it a popular anchorage for sailors. The area is rich in biodiversity, home to rare plants, falcons, and roaming donkeys.

To the northwest, the famous beach of Sakarun invites tourists with its white sand, turquoise shallows, and pine-fringed shade, perfect for families and sun-seekers alike. Nearby, the village of Božava offers tranquil seafront charm, while Veli Rat is home to the tallest lighthouse in the Adriatic. The 42-metre-high Punta Bjanca Lighthouse even offers exclusive accommodation, a dream for those seeking solitude by the sea.

The olive grove of Saljsko Polje is home to olive trees over 700 years old, whose remarkable age and size make it a unique ecological site in the region. Recognized for both its historical significance and horticultural value, the grove has been designated a botanical reserve along the Adriatic coast.

The diverse terrain of Dugi Otok offers endless opportunities for outdoor exploration and adventure.
