[아츠앤컬쳐] 바라즈딘은 크로아티아 북서부 드라바강을 따라 위치한 그림 같은 마을로 문화, 교육, 경제의 중심지다. 도시의 역사는 1181년으로 거슬러 올라가며 1209년에 자유로운 왕실 도시가 되었다. 18세기 중반까지 잠시 크로아티아의 수도 역할을 하며 왕실과 크로아티아 의회를 개최했다. 크로아티아에서 가장 잘 보존된 바로크 도시이며, 이른바 ‘리틀 빈’으로 불린다.

1776년, 파괴적인 화재가 바라즈딘을 휩쓴 이후 바로크 양식과 로코코 양식으로 재건되었다. 그 중심에는 르네상스 바세르부르크 양식의 14세기 요새인 스타리 그라드 성이 있으며, 현재 시립 박물관과 경치 좋은 공원에 둘러싸여 있고, 가까이 16세기 시청이 있는 주 광장 코르조와 우아한 종탑, 드라슈코비치, 파타치치, 헤르체르와 같은 귀족 궁전이 있어 작고 걷기 좋은 역사적인 중심지다.

바라즈딘의 올드 타운에는 11개의 종탑, 6개의 교회, 1641년 프란치스코회 소속 수도원을 비롯하여 3개의 수도원이 있다. 이 도시의 수호 성인은 성 니콜라스로, 1761년에 재건된 본당 교회는 문장과 희귀한 고딕 양식의 탑을 보유하고 있다. 주목할 만한 장소로 크로아티아에서 가장 큰 제단과 주요 음악 행사가 열리는 바라즈딘 대성당, 프란치스코 수도원, 성 삼위일체 카푸친 교회, 성 플로리안 교회 등은 수세기에 걸친 종교 및 문화 유산을 반영한다.

이 도시는 예술, 건축, 축제, 음악의 도시로 널리 알려져 있다. 매년 여름, 슈판시르페스트 축제는 거리를 콘서트, 워크숍, 거리 공연을 위한 야외 공연장으로 탈바꿈시키며 매년 25만 명 이상의 방문객을 끌어들인다. 2023년에는 역동적인 음악의 장소로 유네스코 창의적인 음악 도시라는 칭호를 받고, 창의성, 교육, 국제 협력에 대한 헌신을 인정받았다.

바라즈딘 바로크 이브닝스는 크로아티아에서 가장 오래되고 권위 있는 클래식 음악 축제로, 매년 9월에 개최되며 연중 주요 문화 행사로 인정받고 있다. 1971년에 설립된 이 축제는 바흐, 헨델, 비발디, 코렐리 등 작곡가들의 황금기인 바로크 시대를 기념하며, 종종 그 시대 악기로 연주되는 정통 공연을 한다. 대부분의 콘서트는 바라즈딘의 화려한 바로크 양식의 교회와 뛰어난 음향을 자랑하는 역사적인 장소에서 열리며, 일부 행사는 트라코쉬찬 성과 같은 도시 외곽 지역에서도 개최된다.

2024년, 바라즈딘은 한국 합창단인 카메라타 보칼레 대전의 공연을 주최할 수 있는 특권을 누렸다. 이 행사에서 바라즈딘 챔버 오케스트라와 한국 솔리스트들이 함께 헨델의 ‘이집트의 이스라엘(Israel in Egypt)’을 선보였다. 이 축제는 음악 프로그램 외에도 미술 전시, 요리 체험, 학술 심포지엄 등으로 구성되어 있어 바로크 문화를 종합적으로 기념하는 자리다. 지난 축제 중 바로크 음악 해석의 대가인 조르디 사발의 공연, 2012년 개막식의 빈 소년 합창단, 지휘자 에르베 니케가 이끄는 오케스트라 ‘르 콩쉐르 스피리튀엘’, 그리고 재미있고 웅장한 바로크 음악의 스페인 앙상블 ‘르 텐드레 아무르’의 공연 등이 주목을 받았다.

바라즈딘의 바로크적 우아함, 음악적 유산, 꽃의 아름다움은 활기찬 축제 시즌과 유네스코 창의 음악 도시로서의 위상과 잘 어울린다. 따뜻한 커뮤니티와 강변 풍경은 자전거 타기, 산책 및 기타 야외 활동을 위한 매력적인 장소이기도 하다. 이곳에서는 음악, 자연, 문화가 모든 방문객에게 완벽한 조화를 이룬다.

Varaždin – A City of Baroque Beauty, Festivals, and Music

The picturesque town of Varaždin is located in the northwestern part of Croatia, along the Drava River, and serves as the cultural, educational, and economic centre of Varaždin County. Its history dates back to 1181, and it gained the status of a free royal city in 1209. By the mid-18th century, it briefly served as the capital of Croatia, hosting the royal court and the Croatian Parliament. Widely regarded as the best-preserved baroque city in continental Croatia, it is also known as “Little Vienna.”

In 1776, a devastating fire swept through Varaždin, after which it was rebuilt in the baroque and rococo styles that define its charm today. At its heart stands Stari Grad Castle, a 14th-century fortress turned Renaissance-style Wasserburg, now housing the City Museum and surrounded by scenic parks. Nearby lies Korzo, the lively main square with its 16th-century Town Hall, elegant bell tower, and aristocratic palaces such as Drašković, Patačić, and Herzer, forming a compact, walkable historic centre.

Varaždin’s old town has 11 bell towers, 6 churches, and 3 monasteries, with the tallest belonging to the 1641 Franciscan Church. The city’s patron saint is St. Nicholas, whose parish church, rebuilt in 1761, holds the coat of arms and a rare Gothic tower. Notable sites include the Varaždin Cathedral, home to Croatia’s largest altar and a venue for major music events, the Franciscan Monastery, the Capuchin Church of the Holy Trinity, and the Church of St. Florian. This sacred architecture reflects centuries of religious and cultural heritage.

The town is widely recognised as a city of art, architecture, festivals, and music. Each summer, the Špancirfest festival transforms its streets into an open-air venue for concerts, workshops, and street performances, attracting more than 250,000 visitors annually. In 2023, its dynamic musical scene earned Varaždin the title of UNESCO Creative City of Music, recognising its dedication to creativity, education, and international collaboration.

Varaždin Baroque Evenings is Croatia’s oldest and most prestigious classical music festival, held every September and recognised as the city’s main cultural event of the year. Established in 1971, it celebrates the baroque era, the golden age of composers such as Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Corelli, through authentic performances often played on period instruments. Most concerts take place in Varaždin’s ornate baroque churches and other historic venues with exceptional acoustics, while some events are also hosted at locations beyond the city, such as Trakošćan Castle.

In 2024, Varaždin had the privilege of hosting a performance by Camerata Vocale Daejeon, a South Korean choir, which joined the Varaždin Chamber Orchestra and Korean soloists in presenting Handel’s Israel in Egypt. In addition to its musical programme, the festival features art exhibitions, culinary experiences, and academic symposia, making it a comprehensive celebration of baroque culture.

Memorable moments from past editions of the festival include performances by Jordi Savall, a doyen of baroque music interpretation; the Vienna Boys’ Choir at the 2012 opening; the orchestra Le Concert Spirituel under conductor Hervé Niquet; and numerous appearances by the Spanish ensemble Le Tendre Amour, whose concerts prove that baroque music can be both entertaining and grand in scale.

Varaždin’s Baroque elegance, musical heritage, and floral beauty are matched by its lively festival seasons and UNESCO Creative City of Music status. Its warm community and riverside landscapes also make it an inviting destination for cycling, strolling, and other outdoor activities. Here, music, nature, and culture come together in perfect harmony for every visitor.
