[아츠앤컬쳐] 헝가리는 100년이 넘는 풍부한 재즈 전통을 자랑한다. 헝가리는 제1차 세계대전 이전부터 이미 국제적 흐름, 특히 래그타임을 빠르게 수용했는데, 당시에 소규모 앙상블 래그타임(후에 스윙으로 발전)이 주로 집시 음악가들에 의해 커피하우스에서 연주되었고, 오스트리아-헝가리 제국의 군악대는 관악기로 래그타임 편곡을 연주했다.

헝가리의 현대 재즈 교육은 1965년 9월, 저명한 재즈 피아니스트 야노쉬 곤다의 지도 아래 벨라 바르토크 음악원에 재즈 학과가 설립되면서 크게 발전했다. 이 프로그램은 1980년대 후반까지 헝가리에서 수준 높은 재즈 교육을 제공했으며, 곤다의 또 다른 노력으로 리스트 페렌츠 음악원에도 자체 재즈 학과가 개설되었다. 한편, 페렌츠 에르켈 음악학교, 이후 바르토크 음악원에서도 중급 재즈 교육이 이어져 헝가리 재즈 음악가들을 잇따라 양성하는 데 기여했다.

최근 들어 한국, 특히 서울은 세계적으로 주목받는 음악 축제의 중심지로 부상했으며, 자라섬재즈페스티벌은 그중에서도 가장 권위 있는 문화 행사로 손꼽힌다. 헝가리 연주자들은 잔다리페스타, DMZ 피스트레인 페스티벌 등 한국 축제에 꾸준히 참여하며 명성을 쌓았고, 이에 따라 양국 재즈 커뮤니티 간에 긴밀한 협력의 토대가 마련되었다. 이러한 협력은 2024년 재즈페스트 부다페스트가 자라섬 재즈 페스티벌, 한국문화원, 그리고 서울 리스트 헝가리문화원과 협력하여 문화 교류 프로그램과 상호 공연을 기획하면서 구체화되었다. 이러한 협력의 결실은 헝가리가 중점 국가로 선정된 2025년 페스티벌에서 잘 드러난다.

올해 헝가리 출연진은 헝가리 재즈계를 대표하는 최고의 음악가들로 구성되었다. 코슈트상과 리스트상을 수상한 색소폰 연주자 미하이 드레쉬가 이끄는 드레쉬 콰르텟은 헝가리 민속음악을 프리 재즈와 결합해 전설적 위치에 올랐다. 세계에서 가장 다재다능한 침발롬 연주자로 손꼽히는 미클로시 루카치는 현대 재즈 속에서 악기의 놀라운 확장성을 선보인다. 빅토르 토트가 이끄는 스카이락 메트로폴리탄은 역동적이고 즉흥적인 에너지로 주목받으며, 헝가리 재즈의 떠오르는 신예로 평가받고 있다. 또한 헝가리 최고의 재즈 기타리스트 중 한 명으로 꼽히는 발린트 지에먼트가 이끄는 지에먼트 트리오는 서정적 우아함과 신선한 해석을 무대에 더한다.

2025 자라섬재즈페스티벌은 헝가리 재즈를 전 세계 관객에게 선보이는 동시에 헝가리와 한국, 나아가 세계 재즈 커뮤니티 간의 깊은 문화적 유대감을 형성할 것이다. 관객들은 헝가리 재즈의 미래를 열어가는 신예들과 전설적 음악가들의 연주를 한자리에서 감상할 수 있는 특별한 기회를 갖게 될 것이다.

Hungarian Jazz Bands at Jarasum Jazz Festival

Hungary has a long and rich jazz tradition that stretches back over a century. Even before World War I, the country was quick to embrace international influences, particularly ragtime. During this period, small ensemble ragtime—later evolving into swing—was preserved largely by gypsy musicians performing in coffee houses, while military bands in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy played ragtime arrangements on wind instruments.

Modern jazz education in Hungary took a significant step forward in September 1965 with the establishment of the jazz department at the Béla Bartók Conservatory under the guidance of János Gonda, renowned jazz pianist. This program provided the highest level of jazz instruction in Hungary until the late 1980s, when, again through Gonda’s efforts, the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music inaugurated its own jazz department. Meanwhile, intermediate-level jazz education continued at the Ferenc Erkel Music School and later at Bartók Conservatory, helping cultivate successive generations of Hungarian jazz musicians.

In recent years, Korea—particularly Seoul—has emerged as a hub for internationally recognized music festivals, with the Jarasum Jazz Festival standing out as one of the country’s most prestigious cultural events. Hungarian performers have been consistently present at such Korean festivals, including Zandari Festa, the DMZ Peace Train Festival etc., earning recognition that has paved the way for deeper collaboration between the two nations’ jazz communities.

This growing connection took concrete form in 2024, when Jazzfest Budapest partnered with the Jarasum Jazz Festival, the Korean Cultural Center, and Liszt Institute Seoul to create cultural exchange programs and reciprocal performances. The fruits of this collaboration are evident in the 2025 edition of the festival, where Hungary has been selected as the Focus Country.

This year’s Hungarian lineup showcases some of the finest talents in the country’s jazz scene. The Dresch Quartet, led by Mihály Dresch—a Kossuth and Liszt Prize-winning saxophonist celebrating his 70th birthday in 2025—blends Hungarian folk motifs with free jazz, earning him legendary status. Miklós Lukács, recognized as the world’s most versatile cimbalom player, demonstrates the instrument’s remarkable adaptability in a contemporary jazz context. Viktor Tóth’s Skylark Metropolitan brings a dynamic, improvisational energy that marks him as one of Hungary’s most exciting emerging voices. Meanwhile, the Bálint Gyémánt Trio, featuring one of the country’s leading jazz guitarists, offers lyrical elegance and a fresh perspective to the festival’s program.

The 2025 Jarasum Jazz Festival will not only showcase Hungarian jazz to an international audience but also foster deeper cultural connections between Hungary, Korea, and the global jazz community. Attendees will have the rare opportunity to enjoy performances by both legendary Hungarian musicians and emerging artists who are shaping the future of the country’s jazz scene.

• Saturday, 18 October: Viktor Tóth with Skylark Metropolitan, presenting a set characterized by vibrant improvisation and contemporary jazz energy.

In celebrating Hungary’s exceptional jazz traditions, the 2025 Jarasum Jazz Festival highlights the nation’s enduring influence and contribution to the worldwide jazz landscape.
