COVID-19 전염병의 영향을 가장 많이 받은 산업이 관광이 아닐까 싶다. 전 세계적으로 여행이 어려워 짐에 따라 다음 휴가를 계획하는 것이 어쩌면 대단한 도전인지도 모른다. 이런 생각을 하던 중 크로아티아가 COVID-19 위기를 효과적으로 관리한 모든 국가에 대해 국경을 개방하고 그 나라의 시민들을 환영한다는 뉴스를 접하게 되었다. 2020년 초부터 지금까지 크로아티아는 300만 명 이상의 관광객을 유치하고 4,160만 숙박일을 기록하고 있지만, 그 중 COVID-19 확진 사례가 없었다는 건 정말 놀라운 일이다. 우리가 겪는 이 힘든 시기에 진정으로 필요한 긍정적인 뉴스이지 않을까!

크로아티아가 단 5,500여 건의 확진자로 유럽의 주변 국가들보다 1/50로 적은 사례를 가질 수 있었던 이유는 낮은 인구 밀도와 전염병에 관한 효율적인 대응 시스템에 있다. 비교적 작은 나라이긴 하지만 이미 두 명의 노벨 화학상 수상자를 배출해냈고 또한 저명한 사회의학 학자로서 세계보건기구(WHO)의 창립 회원이자 1948년 WHO 총회 초대 회장이었던 안드리야 스템파(Andrija Stampar) 박사의 기여로 우수한 공중 보건 시스템을 자랑하는 나라로 성장한 것이다.

이번 크로아티아 방문은 어려운 시기에 이루어진 만큼 일천 개의 섬들, 고대로마시대까지 거슬러 올라가는 풍부한 문화유산과 함께 아드리아해의 아름다움을 다시 한번 둘러보고 싶었다. 그 중에 도시 오파티야를 방문으로 크로아티아 관광의 역사에 관해 배우는 기회를 갖게 되었다. 오파티야 리비에라(Opatija Riviera)를 따라 그림 같은 언덕에 자리한 웅장하고 오래된 빌라들은 19세기 후반에 합스부르크 제국의 엘리트들과 오스트리아 귀족들이 아드리아해에 휴가를 오기 시작하면서 건축된 저택들로 크로아티아 관광의 시초가 되었다고 한다.

1891년으로 거슬러 올라가서 유럽의 왕자와 총독, 백작과 남작 부인, 그리고 그 당시 주요 과학자 및 의사들을 포함하는 VIP들의 방명록을 보는 것은 참으로 흥미로운 재미다. 그 중, 1894 년 3월, 독일 황제 빌헬름 2세와 함께 합스부르크 황제 프란츠 조셉의 방문 노트는 아주 특별한 기록이다.

19세기에 들어서면서 오파티야의 관광은 한층 붐을 타고 스웨덴, 노르웨이, 루마니아, 불가리아 및 여러 주변 국가에서 온 수많은 유럽 왕과 여왕을 손님으로 맞이하게 되었다. 아드리아 해안을 내려다보는 멋드러진 옛 빌라들은 오늘날 부티크 호텔로 변모되어 고유한 당당함을 유지한 채로 여전히 손님들을 귀족처럼 모신다.

웅장한 아마드리아 파크 호텔 밀레니움(Amadria Park Hotel Millenium)도 그 중 하나다. 빈의 유명한 건축가 칼 시들(Carl Seidl)이 설계한 이 호텔은 19세기 왕족을 포함한 유명 인사들의 게스트 목록이 단연 인상적이다. 이 호텔은 오스트리아 예술가 칼 루드비그 하스만(Karl Ludwig Hassman)의 원본 그림을 보존, 전시하고 있는데 대부분이 다른 많은 예술가들의 소재와 마찬가지로 이 지역의 아름다움에서 영감을 받은 그림들이다.

크바르네르(Kvarner) 만의 탁 트인 전망을 감상하며 호텔의 지중해 정원에 앉아 있노라면 이 천하의 아름다움이 단순한 꿈이 아닌가 의심을 하게 될 정도로 황홀하다. 이 고급스러운 5성급 호텔은 COVID-19 확산이 한창인 시기에도 관광의 오아시스 역할을 잘 수행해 냈다.

크로아티아의 수도인 자그레브에 위치한 자매 호텔인 아마드리아 파크 호텔 캐피탈(Amadria Park Hotel Capital)은 아마드리아 파크 밀레니움에서 차로 단 2시간 거리에 위치해 있다. 오파티아에서와 마찬가지로 투숙객들은 동일한 우아함과 왕실 대우를 받을 뿐만 아니라 자그레브 시내 중심에서 중앙 유럽 역사 또한 함께 느낄 수 있다. 역시 5성급인 이 호텔은 원래 20세기 초에 웅장한 아르데코 건축 양식의 오스트리아 은행으로 건축되었는데 최근에 이 고급스러운 장소를 활용하기 위해 호텔로 복원되었다.

이 호텔에서 내가 가장 좋아하는 지하 ‘비밀’장소는 원래의 이중 강철 구조의 금고문을 통과해 들어가는 옛 금고 자리에 지어진 독특한 바/라운지다. 신사들이 주로 모이던 시가 클럽은 이른바 역사의 중요한 결정이 내려진 곳이 아니던가. 그래서 나는 이 비밀 장소에 앉아 크로아티아의 초기 관광에 대한 글을 쓰기로 작정하고, 예전 웅장한 빌라의 본래 건축 미학이 고급 명품 호텔로 변모되면서 어떻게 유지되었는지 독자들과 함께 나누고 싶었다.

COVID-19 기간 동안 국경을 열고 외국인 방문객을 맞이한 곳은 그리 많지 않다. 고맙게도 크로아티아는 국경을 오픈하여 관광객들을 환대하는 전통을 어김없이 이어가고 있다. 늘 그렇듯이, 나의 크로아티아 여행은 주변국들의 고대 황제와 귀족들에게 널리 인정되어 오늘날까지 남아있는 크로아티아 관광 역사의 마법을 관찰할 수 있는 뜻깊은 여행이었다.

오늘날 크로아티아가 코로나로부터 안전한 피난처임을 몸소 느끼면서 이 지역의 속담을 상기했다. 하나님이 천지 창조를 마치셨을 때 휴식을 위해 정원을 꾸려 놓으셨다는 곳이 바로 이곳이구나!

Croatia as a Safe-Haven: Historical and Heritage Hotels

Tourism is an industry that has arguably been most heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With global travel disruptions, planning your next holiday has proven to be a true challenge. In that regard, I was thrilled to learn that the ever-hospitable Croatia has opened its borders for all the countries that have managed the COVID-19 crisis effectively, welcoming their citizens with open arms. I recently learned that since the beginning of this year, there have been more than 6 million tourists and 41.6 million overnight stays in Croatia with no registered increases in COVID-19-positive cases among them.

This good news is exactly the dose of optimism needed during this trying time. As a country with a low population density, Croatia’s efficient pandemic response system managed to contain the number of cases to approximately 5500 - fifty times less than in many European countries.

Some regions circumvented even a single case. Whilst reading about this pandemic response, I found out that although it is a relatively small country, Croatia boasts two Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry and a good public health system, which can be heavily attributed to Dr Andrija Stampar.

As a distinguished scholar of social medicine, he was one of the founding members of the World Health Organization, as well as the first president of the WHO Assembly in 1948. While visiting Croatia, I was once again reminded of the Adriatic’s beauty, with thousands of islands and a rich cultural heritage spanning back to Ancient Roman times. This time, I was also fascinated by the history of the tourism Croatia is famous for. The magnificent old villas covering the picturesque hills along the Opatija Riviera are reminders of how tourism in the Adriatic actually started: with the Imperial Habsburg Monarchyelite and Austrian nobility, who began vacationing here in the late 19th century.

It is truly astonishing to see the Golden Book of guests, which includes European princes and viceroys, countesses and baronesses, as well as leading scientists and medical doctors, dating back to 1891. A special entry from March 1894 notes the visit of Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph himself along with German Emperor Wilhelm II. 19th Century Opatija also welcomed numerous European kings and queens, such as from Sweden and Norway, Romania, Bulgaria and other countries.

Nowadays, these unique old-villa boutique hotels have retained their regal atmosphere and still treat their guests like royalty. The magnificent Amadria Park Hotel Millenium is among them. Designed by the famous Viennese architect Carl Seidl, it boasts an impressive list of guests, including 19th century royalty. The hotel maintains and displays the original paintings by Austrian artist Karl Ludwig Hassman who was, like many others, inspired by the beauty of this area. Sitting in the Hotel’s Mediterranean garden with the panoramic view of the Kvarner bay makes you wonder whether such beauty is real and not simply a dream.

Likewise, this luxurious 5-star hotel acts as an oasis during the COVID-19 pandemic Just a two-hour drive away is its sister hotel, the Amadria Park Hotel Capital, situated in Zagreb, Croatia’s capital city. Like in Opatija, guests experience the same elegance and royal treatment, but can also discover Central European history in the very centre of town. As a 5-star hotel, it is located in the magnificent Art Deco building, originally build in the early 20th century as an Austrian bank, and recently restored to house this luxurious venue.

My favourite “secret” place in this hotel is a unique bar built into the old main bank vault, still with the original security door. The gentlemen’s cigar-club was where many important decisions were made, so it seemed fitting that this is where I decided to write about Croatia’s early tourism and how its original aesthetic has been retained in elite Heritage hotels.

During COVID-19, very few destinations have opened their borders and welcomed foreign visitors. Croatia is, thankfully, among those that have, continuing its hospitable tradition. As always, I observed something truly magical in this country, which has been widely recognised by emperors and nobility, and remains today.

With Croatia as a safe-haven nowadays, I am able to better understand this area’s common saying – that when God finished creating the world, he kept one place for himself. I’m more than inclined to agree.
