크로아티아 전역에 찾아볼 수 있는 수십 개의 성들은 오랜 세월을 거치며 잘 보전되어 우리에게 아름다운 유럽의 풍부한 문화와 역사를 떠올리게 한다. 대부분의 성들은 언덕 꼭대기에 군사 거점이 되는 성벽으로 둘러싸여 신중하게 설계됨을 볼 수 있는데 이 지역 역사의 큰 부분을 차지한 빈번하고 잔인했던 오토만 군사의 침략에도불구하고 잘 보호되었음은 놀라운 일이다.

오늘날 크로아티아 성들은 박물관으로, 또는 문화 유산으로 지정되어 일반인들에게 공개되고 있다. 모든 성들은 제각기 화려했던 시대의 흥미로운 이야기와 전설을 간직하고 있다. 기사와 전쟁 장군의 영웅담, 왕족, 귀족의 전설, 수많은 비밀 방과 탑이 가진 신비한 이야기들, 마술과 비밀의 사랑 이야기 중 하나가 아닐까 싶다.

지역의 전설을 따라, 이 성들에 살고 있던 요정들의 재미난 이야기 중 하나를 전할까 한다. 자그레브 인근 오키츠산 언덕에 지어진 성 (1193 년)과 주민들을 오스만 터키 제국의 공격으로부터 구해낸 놀라운 요정의 이야기를 들어보자.

3 년간 지역주민들이 용감하게 방어한 탓에 성을 정복하지 못한 터키 군대는 성을 둘러싸고 성 주민들을 굶겨서 점령하려는 계획을 세웠다. 오키츠의 요정은 성 수비수들에게 마지막 남은 음식을 가방에 넣고 모두 굴려 내려 보내라고 말했다. 푸짐한 곡물과 음식이 굴러오는 것을 본 터키군은 성 주민들이 절대 항복하지 않을 것을 알고 깊은 공격을 포기하고 전장을 떠났다고 한다.

스플리트(Split)와 가까운 중세 시대의 클리스 요새와 성은 1242년 유럽의 몽골 침공 당시 헝가리-크로아티아 왕 벨라 4세의 고향이었다. 16 세기 클리스 성은 오스만 역사에서 가장 강력한 제국 오스만 술탄(황제) 쉴레이만의 공주였던 미리마흐(Mihrimah) 공주의 집이었다. 클리스 성은 오스만의 잦은 침공으로부터 600년 이상이나 유럽을 성공적으로 방어해냈다. 이 지역 주민들의 놀라운 용기는 관광객의 끝없는 방문으로 세상에 알려지게 되었고 2013 년 “왕좌의 게임”을 포함한 수많은 할리우드 영화가 제작되면서 사랑을 받는 관광지로 소개되었다.

리예카시 위쪽 가파른 언덕위에 위치한 트르사트 성(13 세기)은 기독교의 비밀을 유지하고 있는 신비로운 곳이기도 하다. 오래 전, 1291년에 총독이자 이 땅의 주인인 니콜라 프란코판이 나사렛에 있는 성모 마리아 탄생지가 언덕 꼭대기에 묘하게 나타나는 신비한 기적을 목격했다고 한다. 그는 팔레스타인에 전문가들을 파견하여 추가 연구를 하고 이 현상을 설명하려 노렸했다.

전설에 따르면, 성모 마리아의 집은 수천 일 동안 트르사트Trsat의 언덕에 있었고, 그 후 천사의 날개로 가톨릭 순례지인 이탈리아 마을 로레토Loreto로 옮겨졌다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 이 전설에 의거하여 1453 년에 총독 마틴 프란코판은 성모 마리아 집이 있던 곳에 교회를 세웠다. 수많은 이들의 병이 완치되고 회복의 기적이 일어나면서 트르사트 성은 카톨릭 공식 순례 장소로 명명되고, 또한 2003년 교황 요한 바오로 2 세가 방문하기도 한 장소이다.

필자가 자그레브에서 약 80km 떨어진 그림 같은 언덕에 녹지로 둘러싸인 트라코스챤 성(Trakoscan Castle)을 방문했을 때 비로소 그저 역사속의 로맨스에 연연할 필요가 없음을 깨달았다. 성 주변에 펼쳐진 아름다운 호수는 모든 방문객이 자신만의 이야기를 만들어 낼 수 있을 정도로 로맨틱한 분위기를 자아내고 있었다. 호수 주변 공기안에는 사랑이 이미 듬뿍 들어있었음을 느꼈는데 지금도 그에 대한 추억이 생생하다. 매혹적인 나라 크로아티아를 방문할 때 트라코스챤 성과 청록빛 가득한 호수 주변의 산책을 반드시 경험해 보기를 권유하고 싶다.

Legends and romantic histories of the Croatian medieval Castles

More than dozens of well-preserved castles all around Croatia remind us of the rich cultural, social and political history of this stunningly beautiful part of Europe. Some of these castles go far back in history and were built even in the 12th Century. However, the majority of the castles were carefully designed and constructed as military strongholds at the tops of hills with surrounding stone-walls to protect against frequent and severe Ottoman military attacks and invasions that have marked a large part of the history of that area.

Croatian castles today are mainly museums and are listed as the cultural heritage, open to visitors. Every castle hides some remarkable stories and legends from its glory days. Ranging from the legends of bravery of knights and war heroes, peculiar stories about the royalty, local viceroys or nobility of the time, some mysteries of the numerous secret rooms and towers, to some magic and secret love stories and romances.

According to the local legends, there were many fairies that had lived in these castles and marked them with their incredible stories. In the vicinity to Zagreb there was the Okic’s mountain fairy that managed to save the Okic Hill Castle (built in 1193) and its people from the Ottoman Turkish Empire’s attack, simply by her incredible intellect.

After three years of brave defense of the Castle, the Turkish army decided to starve them to the death by surrounding the hill where the castle is located. The Okic fairy told the Castle defenders to pack in the bags the last grains and food they had and slide these bags down to the Turkish army. The Turkish army felt deep disappointment, believing that the Castle defenders had food in abundance and would never surrender. Consequently, they gave up with attacks and simply left the battlefield.

Close to Split, the medieval Klis Fortress and Castle has been a home of kings and many famous figures throughout history. In 1242, it was home of Hungarian-Croatian King Bela IV during the Mongolian invasion in Europe. It was also a home of Templars for many years. In the 16th Century the Klis Castle was a home of the daughter of famous Ottoman Sultan (Emperor) Suleiman the Magnificent - princess Mihrimah, who was the most powerful imperial princesses in Ottoman history.

The Klis Castle today is the must-visited place for all of those who would like to learn more about this amazing bravery of the local people who have successfully defended Europe from the Ottoman invasions and attacks for more than 600 years. The remarkable history of the castle was recognized by numerous Hollywood productions, including “Game of Thrones”, filmed at the Klis Castle location in 2013.

Trsat Castle (13th Century), rising sharply above the City of Rijeka is a mysterious place that still keeps one of the most mystic secrets of Christianity. Long ago, in 1291 the viceroy and owner of the land Nikola Frankopan witnessed a mysterious miracle of the Holy Mary’s birth house from Nazareth is said to have appeared one day, in unexplainable way, at the top of the hill. To find an answer, he sent an expert delegation to Palestine to conduct further research and explain this phenomenon.

The Holy Mary’s house was there at the hill of Trsat for a thousand days and then, according to the legend, at the wings of the angels was removed to the Italian town of Loreto - today one of the most visited Catholic places of pilgrimage. In respect to this legend, in 1453 viceroy Martin Frankopan built a church right at the place where the Holy Mary’s house was located. As an official pilgrimage place marked with numerous health cures and recovery miracles happened there, the Castle and the Church Our Lady of Trsat was visited by Pope John Paul II in 2003.

When I visited the beautiful Trakoscan Castle, some 80 km from Zagreb, in the picturesque hilly and green area, I found out that visitors do not need some special legends about the romantic love stories from the past because the whole atmosphere with the castle and the beautiful lake is romantic enough that every visitor could have her or his own romantic story. There is love in this air. I experienced in a memorable way. The visit of Trakoscan Castle and a walk around this magnificent turquoise-colored lake is a must when you visit this magic country of Croatia.
