크로아티아의 수천 개의 섬들로 이루어진 아드리아해는 항해 및 해상 휴가를 즐기는 사람들에겐 천국이며 또한 오염되지 않은 자연의 아름다움으로 많은 자연 애호가의사랑을 받는다. 파란색의 무궁한 변화, 푸른 소나무 숲, 하얀 석회암의 산, 고대 성벽으로 둘러싸인 도시, 아름답고 잘 보호된 항구와 숨어있는 그림 같은 어촌 마을을 발견하는 재미가 쏠쏠한 까닭이다.
크로아티아의 스포츠 항해 역사는 최초의 세일링 클럽이 설립된 19세기로 거슬러 올라간다. 독특한 아름다움을 가진 수천 개의 섬 중에서 아드리아해에서 가장 먼 섬으로 흥미로운 역사와 완벽하리만치 아름다운 자연의 비스섬을 먼저 찾아보자. 비스섬은 할리우드 영화 ‘맘마미아2’를 촬영한 장소이기도 하다. 오래전 비스섬은 온화한 기후로 풍부한 와인과 올리브 등 다양한 농산물이 나는 고대 그리스 도시였으며 수 세기 동안 베네치아와 성지 사이의 주요 해상 노선에 자리하여 전략적 위치로 아주 매력적인 섬이었다.
이 시기의 풍부한 역사를 증언하듯이 비스섬 인근에는 수많은 무역선들이 침몰해 있음을 볼 수 있다. 세계대전 동안에도 비스섬은 군사 기지로 수많은 전투가 벌어져 격추된 영국 조종사들의 묘지가 있으며 해마다 영국 정부가 크로아티아 및 동맹국과 함께 희생된 모든 이들을 위한 추모식을 거행하고 있다.
비스섬에서 유람선을 타고 몇 분이면 도착하는 비쉐보섬의 블루 케이브는 놓쳐서는 안 될 희귀한 볼거리다. 이곳은 하루 중 일정한 시간 동안 바닷물이 마법의 푸른 빛으로 변해 동굴 안이 축복을 받은 듯 신성한 아름다움을 선사한다.
돌아오는 길에 또 다른 국립 공원인 믈레트섬을 방문해 보자. 믈레트섬은 섬 전체의 아름다움을 보존하기 위해 정부가 엄격한 제재로 보호하고 있다. 섬의 중앙에는 두 개의 바닷물 호수가 있으며 큰 호수 한가운데의 작은 섬에는 12세기에 건립된 성 메리 베네딕토회 수도원이 있는데, 수상 택시나 카약으로 방문이 가능하다. 수도원의 놀라운 역사뿐만 아니라 맛있는 현지 음식과 와인은 오랫동안 추억에 남을 것이다.
믈레트섬 남쪽에는 매혹적인 사파이어색 물이 가득찬 오디세우스 동굴이 있다. 이타카의 유명한 고대 그리스 왕이자 호머의 서사시 속 오디세우스의 난파선이 이 섬에 도착한 후 요정 칼립소에 의해 갇히게 됐다는 전설 속 동굴이다. 그러나 지역 주민들은 오디세우스가 칼립소와 함께 아름다운 자연에 빠져 7년 동안 이 아름다운 섬에 머물기로 스스로 결정했다는 숨겨진 진실을 귀띔해준다. 아름다운 섬을 보면 주민들의 말을 믿지 않을 수 없다.
이어서 배를 고대로마 황제 디오크레시안 성이 있는 스플리트의 멋진 군도로 향해 흐바르섬의 숨 막힐 듯 아름다운 라벤더밭을 건너 수천 년 된 올리브나무를 지나 브라치섬의 세계적으로 유명한 모래 해변인 골든 혼을 따라 항해해 보자. 뭐니 뭐니 해도 자다르 군도에 위치하는 유네스코 지정 국립 공원 코르나티제도가 여행객에게는 가장 인기 있는 크로아티아 항해 투어일 것이다.
많은 예술가와 시인들이 이 지상낙원에서 영감을 받아 훌륭한 작품을 남겼다. 조지 버나드 쇼는 “하나님께서 이 세상을 창조한 마지막날, 축하의 기념으로 눈물과 별과 숨결로 코르나티군도를 창조하셨다”고 표현하기도 했다.
이 군도는 약 150개의 크고 작은 섬과 암초로 구성되어 있는데 진정한 마음의 평화를 얻기 위해 자연에 완전히 몰입하고 싶다면 코르나티섬을 선택하기를 권한다. 코르나티섬을 찾는다면 하나님이야말로 최고의 예술가인 이유를 분명히 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
Sailing through the cultural heritages of the Croatian islands
Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea, with thousands of islands is really a paradise for all who like sailing and nautical holidays. But it is also the place for all real nature-lovers, due to its stunningly beautiful and unspoiled nature. It is the colourful interplay between turquoise and azure-blue sea, pine-tree green forests, white lime-stone range of mountains and the castle-like ancient cities surrendered by the strong stone-walls. You will discover many tiny fishing villages hidden in their own bays and well-protected tiny harbours.
History of sport-sailing in Croatia goes back to the 19th Century when the first sailing clubs have been established. Among the thousands of islands with their own unique loveliness, I have picked up for my story the Island Vis, that is not only one of the most remoted islands in the Croatian Adriatic but also one with amazing history and impeccable native beauty. The other reason, that is supposed to be my secret, is that Vis Island was a place of filming the Hollywood movie “Mama Mia 2”.
Long ago in the history, Vis was an Old Greek city with the rich wine, olives, and agriculture production due to the fine mild climate. For many centuries, Vis was a strategic island attractive to all who tried to control the major maritime routes between Venice and Holy Land. The numerous sunk vessels in the vicinity of Vis area are the silent witnesses of that history-rich period. During the World Wars, Vis Island was a strategic military base and there are the numerous battles and several military graveyards with mainly British war-pilots shot down in this area. Every year the British dignitaries, together with the Croatian government and all countries organize the commemorations to pay respect to all of them who died for democracy, freedom of Europe and the better World.
Few minutes by a tour-boat from the Vis Island there is a must-see - an absolutely supernatural phenomenon – the Blue Cave – a magic cave in the heart of a small island Biševo, that in the certain part of a day seawater in the cave being blessed with the fascinating blue light, making the scene in the cave divinely stunning.
On the way back, it is highly advisable to visit the Island Mljet, another magnificent national park of Croatia. The whole island is under strict protection regime to preserve this immense natural allure. In the centre of the island there are two amazing saltwater-lakes and at the small island , St. Mary located in the centre of the bigger lake is a 12th Century Benedictine Monastery which can be visited either by an electric water-taxi or, if you prefer, by kayak. The Monastery offers, not only its amazing history, but also delicious local food and memorable wine experience.
On the south side of the island Mljet you can find the Odysseus’s Cave with the mesmerising sapphire-blue water. There is a legend, saying that famous ancient Greek King of Ithaca and a hero of the Homer’s epic poem Odysseus, after a shipwreck ended up at this island, trapped by the nymph Calypso. The local people will rather reveal the “real” story behind his 7 years “imprisonment” at this island. When you see the island, it is indeed easy to believe that he was not imprisoned, but in love with the natural beauty of this enchanted island and he had just decided to stay there for seven years. Surely, not alone.
And when you turn your boat back to the opulent archipelago of the Old Roman Emperor’s Diocletian town of Split, you will cross along the breathtaking and healing-power lavender fields on the Island Hvar, sail along the uncountable thousand years old olive trees, and beside the Golden horn world-wide famous sandy beach at the Island of Barč.
Many sailing tours offer the Kornati Islands, located in Zadar’s archipelago and one of the numerous Croatian national parks protected by UNESCO. Many artists and poets were inspired by this pure paradise. George Bernard Shaw said that “On the last day of Creation, God desired to crown his work and thus created the Kornati islands out of tears, stars and breath”. Archipelago is made of around 150 islands, islets and reefs. If you like to be completely immersed in nature and in real peace of mind, the Kornati islands are just for you. Here you can clearly understand why the God is indeed the best artist.
