[아츠앤컬쳐] 폴란드 쿠야프스코-포모로스키에주에 위치한 마을 그루지옹츠에는 10만 명에 가까운 주민들이 살고 있다. 이 곳의 독특한 기념비적 건축물에 700년이 넘는 격동의 역사가 새겨져 있다. 방문객들은 그루지옹츠의 비스툴라 강 다리에 올라 고딕 양식으로 지어진 곡물 창고가 펼쳐진 특별한 광경을 볼 수 있다.

그루지옹츠의 곡물 창고는 이 도시의 랜드마크로, 관광객들을 불러들이는 역할을 한다. 절벽에 위치하고 있어 외부에서 봤을 때는 높이가 20m에 달하지만, 도시 안에서 보면 1층 또는 2층 높이의 건물에 불과하다. 과거에는 곡물 저장 창고일 뿐만 아니라 도시의 방어벽 역할도 했다. 이 곳에는 나무로 된 배수로가 물가에 바로 연결되어 있어 작은 보트나 배로 곡물을 직접 실어 나를 수 있었다. 현재는 총 26개의 곡물 창고가 약 300m 정도 줄지어 서있다.

이 독특한 건물은 2017년에 역사적 기념물(Historical Monument)이라는 칭호를 수여받았는데, 폴란드 대통령이 특별한 역사적 가치를 지닌 기념물들에만 수여하는 칭호이다. 또한 인기 여행 매거진인 “내셔널 지오그래픽 트래블러”가 주최한 여론 조사에서 “폴란드의 새로운 7대 불가사의” 중 하나로 선정된 바 있다.

이 도시의 스피흐쇼바 스트리트는 아주 분위기 있고 친밀한 느낌을 자아낸다. 서쪽 면 전체가 창고들로 가로막혀 있는데 이곳에서는 창고들은 작고 아늑한 연립주택처럼 보인다. 비스툴라 강둑 절벽에서 우뚝 솟은 건물들처럼 보이는 바와 완전히 다른 느낌이다. 자갈이 깔린 거리는 비스툴라 강둑에서 수문까지는 가파르게 이어지고, 수문부터 캐슬 힐까지는 완만하게 이어진다. 캐슬 힐에서는 노천카페에서 커피 한 잔의 여유를 즐기거나 클리멕 타워(Klimek Tower)에 오를 수 있는데, 클리멕 타워에서는 잊을 수 없는 풍광을 보여준다.

도시의 주력 행사는 ‘그래너리 페어(Granary Fair)’로 그루지옹츠가 도시로 인정된 기념일에 열린다. 그루지옹츠의 독특한 기후와 특유의 친밀한 분위기는 그래너리 페어를 더 특별하게 한다. 수일간 마켓이 열리는 거리는 마임을 하는 사람들과 동화 속 주인공으로 변장을 한 사람들, 음악가 등으로 가득하다. 예술 행사 이벤트로는 아이들을 위한 다양한 퍼포먼스와 애니메이션, 워크샵 등이 있다.

유럽 다른 곳에서는 찾아볼 수 없는 기념비적 장소인 그루지옹츠를 방문하여 타 도시들도 부러워할 만한 비스툴라 강의 전망을 바라본다면 아주 좋은 추억이 될 것이다.

Grudziądz

Grudziądz is a town of almost 100 thousand residents located in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province in Poland. 

Over 700 years of turbulent history has left its mark on the city in the form of unique monuments. All visitors arriving in Grudziądz on the bridge on the Vistula River are greeted by a unique panorama of Gothic granaries.

Grudziądz granaries are certainly the city’s showpiece and the most important magnet attracting tourists to the area. Situated on an escarpment, from the outside they are as much as 20 m tall, while seen from the city they are only one- or two-floor high. In the past, they served not only as grain stores, but also as the city’s defense walls. They were connected to the waterfront with wooden drop gutters that were used to pour grain directly onto boats and ships. At present, there are twenty-six granaries in total and they form a 300-meter-long line.

These unique buildings were awarded the title of Historical Monument in 2017. This prestigious distinction is awarded by the President of the Republic of Poland to monuments of particular historical value. They were also awarded the title of “One of the 7 New Wonders of Poland” in a poll organized by the popular travel magazine “National Geographic Traveler”.

Today, Spichrzowa Street is one of the most atmospheric and intimate streets in the city. The western frontage is built up entirely by granaries. In this place, they look more like small cozy tenement houses and do not resemble at all the towering buildings visible from the escarpment on the bank of Vistula. The cobblestone street rises steeply from the bank of Vistula to the Water Gate and then gently to the Castle Hill, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee in an open-air cafe and climb the Klimek Tower, which offers an unforgettable view of the river.

The city's flagship event and cultural showpiece is the Granary Fair, held on the anniversary of Grudziądz gaining its city rights. The unique nature of the Granary Fair is due to the unique climate, intimacy, and atmosphere of the city. For many days, the market streets are filled with mimes, fairy tale characters, musicians, and stilt walkers. Art events are accompanied by plenty of attractions for children in the form of performances, animations, and workshops.

Visiting Grudziądz is a good idea because the city’s monuments are the only ones of this type in Europe and many cities can envy its panoramic view of Vistula.
