[아츠앤컬쳐] 아드리아해 연안을 따라 아름답게 펼쳐진 지중해 국가 크로아티아는 다양한 산맥의 줄기가 뻗어있는 독특한 유럽 국가 중 하나이다. 크로아티아산 중에서도 가장 긴 벨레빗산은 아드리아 해안선을 따라 145km에 걸쳐 펼쳐지며 매우 다른 국지기후가 형성되어 아드리아해와 내륙 두 지역을 완전 다른 세계로 나누어 놓는다. 이로 인해 일부 지역에서는 산을 통과하는 5.5km의 터널을 건너면 10도의 온도 차를 경험하게 된다. 이렇게 되면 내륙에서 눈 덮인 겨울 풍경을 떠난 불과 5분 후에 따뜻한 봄바람을 맞으며 해안가 테라스에서 점심을 즐길 수 있는 것이다. 겨울에는 스키를 타고 한 시간 안에 바다로 건너와 수영을 즐길 수 있는 꿈 같은 이야기이다.

벨레빗산은 크로아티아에서 가장 흥미롭고 풍부한 자연경관을 가진 국립공원으로, 1978년부터는 ‘인간과 생물권’ 유네스코 프로그램에서 생물권 보호구역으로 지정되었다. 자연의 고귀한 아름다움 외에도 해발 1,480m의 벨레빗산에서만 볼 수 있는 고유식물들을 한곳에 모은 독특한 식물원이 있는데 유럽에서 가장 높은 곳에 위치한 식물원 중 하나가 아닐까 싶다.

산 정상을 따라 이루어지는 하이킹과 트레킹은 크로아티아에서 큰 인기가 있다. 산 정상의 트레일은 접근하기 쉽고 관리가 매우 잘되어 있어 평화롭게 걸으며 자연을 즐기기엔 아주 안성맞춤이다. 해발 1,500m의 등산로를 걷노라면 한쪽은 아드리아해를 가로질러 흩어져 있는 수백 개의 섬의 파노라마를 즐길 수 있고 또 다른 쪽은 겹겹이 이루어진 수많은 산봉우리들이 어울려 자아내는 웅장함을 사계절 내내 감상할 수 있다.

그중 가장 인기있는 트레일은 자비쟌느에서 바쉬케 오쉬타리예까지 산 능선을 따라 길게 뻗어있는 프레무쥐츠 트레일이다. 이 트레일은 1일 정도 소요되는 거리로 고도 1,500~1,700m에서 초원과 소나무숲, 풀이 무성한 계곡과 겹겹이 자아내는 산 능선의아름다움을 볼 수 있다. 이 트레일은 1931~1933년 사이에 만들어졌는데, 조직화된 산악 트레킹의 오래된 전통과 크로아티아인들의 산에 대한 사랑을 느낄 수 있다.

벨레빗산에서 더 긴 트레킹을 즐기고자 한다면 산 정상의 능선을 따라 잘 닦인 100km의 트레일을 경험해 보기를 권한다. 전 구역이 비교적 쉬운 산책로 또는 산악 자전거 트레일로 이루어진 이 트레킹 투어는 중간중간 트레일을 따라 특이한 통나무집과 오두막에서 숙박을 하며 최장 9일 동안 진행되며 자연을 만끽할 수 있다.

오늘날 잘 설계된 모바일 산악 가이드 앱과 전체 산맥 간 연결이 잘 되어 있어 크로아티아 벨레빗 산악 트레일은 이제 그 어느 때보다 안전하고 접근하기 쉬워졌다. 그러나 눈이 많이 내리는 겨울산행은 아직도 일반인들에게는 어려운 코스다. 대신 겨울 방문객은 장엄한 산들의 언덕에 있는 동화 속 그림 같은 마을과 산악리조트에서 즐기다가 추위에 지칠 때 즈음 산 아래로 내려와 끝없이 펼쳐진 아드리아해 위에서 반사되는 햇빛 속 아름다운 봄의 따뜻함을 단 몇 분 안에 만끽할 수 있는 특혜를 누릴 수 있다.

A Gorgeous View of the Croatian Adriatic Archipelago

Along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, lies the beautifully picturesque Mediterranean country of Croatia, a unique European country with a wide range of mountains. Velebit Mountain, the longest of the Croatian mountains, extends 145 km along the Adriatic coastline and separates two regions with very different microclimates, Adriatic and continental, as if dividing two different worlds. In some parts of the year, crossing the 5.5 km tunnel through the mountain can bring you across a temperature difference of 10 degrees. On one side of the mountain, you can leave behind a snowy winter landscape and, just 5 minutes later, be welcomed by a warm spring breeze and enjoy lunch on a seafront terrace. You could ski and then swim in the sea within an hour.

But there is also much more to Velebit Mountain. It is one of Croatia’s most interesting and richest natural landscapes, declared and protected as a national park. Since 1978, Velebit Mountain was also listed as a biosphere reserve within the "Man and the Biosphere" UNESCO programme. In addition to the immense natural beauty, Velebit is home to a unique botanical garden with many endemic plants and located at an altitude of 1480 m above sea level, making it one of the highest botanic gardens in Europe.

It is no surprise that hiking and trekking along the mountain top is so popular in Croatia. The main trails along the top of Velebit Mountain are easy approachable and very well maintained, providing breathtaking views – a panorama of hundreds of islands scattered across the Adriatic Sea on one side, and a magnificent interplay of numerous mountain peaks, ranged in many layers on the other.

The most popular trail is the Premužić trail, a longitudinal path by foot stretching along the mountain ridge from Zavižanj to Baške Oštarije. This beautiful oneday trail weaves through meadows and pine forests, grassy valleys, to mountain peaks, all at an altitude between 1,500 and 1,700 m. This trail was built from 1931-1933, suggesting an old tradition of organized mountain-trekking and public love for mountains in Croatia. For those who enjoy longer treks, Velebit mountain also boasts a relatively easy walking or mountain biking trail along the top ridge spanning 100 km. The advised trekking tour lasts 9 days, with accommodations in quaint log cabins and huts along the way.

Today, with well-designed mobile mountain guide apps and connectivity across the whole mountain range, the Croatian mountain trails are now safer and more approachable than ever. However, the winter months bring an abundance of snow, making many of the high mountain trails hardly crossable. Instead, a winter visitor is advised to enjoy the fairy-tale-like picturesque villages and mountain resorts at the hills of these majestic mountains. And don’t forget, if you get tired of the winter chill, the lovely spring warmth is just a few minutes away, across the tunnel below these mountains, at the coast of the Adriatic Sea.
