[아츠앤컬쳐] 나는 수도 자그레브 중심의 아름다운 커피숍에 앉아 지나가는 사람들의 행복한 표정, 멋드러진 옷차림새, 느긋한 모습을 바라보는 것을 좋아한다. 주로 유명한 프란코판 거리에 있는 즈린스키 카페의 작은 테이블을 즐겨 찾는데, 주위에서 이야기하는 주제에 귀를 기울이고 있노라면 마치 카페가 작은 우주로 변한 듯 느껴진다.
최근에 나는 옥스포드 세계사 교수 피터 프란코판 실크로드 세계사 <The Silk Roads>를 구입했는데, 이 책은 서양과 동양, 특히 중국을 연결하는 고대 무역로의 중요성을 소개하고 있다. 아시아계 미국인이자 유럽을 자주 방문하는 나는 이 적절한 연결 고리와 도로가 얼마나 중요한지 쉽게 이해할 수 있었다. 그 당시 세계를 더 가깝게 만드는데 이 옛 길 자체가 결정적이었음은 확실하다. 이 책은 서양뿐 아니라 중국에서도 베스트셀러가 되고 영국에서 올해의 책으로 선정되어 높은 평가를 받았다.
나는 프란코판 교수가 자그레브에 있는 이 유명한 거리의 이름과 같은 성을 갖고 있는 것에 주목했다. 크로아티아 친구들과 “Who is Who 2021”의 도움으로 프란코판 가문이 크로아티아 역사와 정치, 문화 발전에 중요한 역할을 했다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 프란코판 가문은 현재까지 자선 및 인도주의 활동에 깊이 관여하고, 교육과 문화 진흥에 지속적으로 지원하였다. 또한, 역사적으로 크로아티아 귀족을 교황청 및 여러 국가 지도층과 연결할 뿐만 아니라 크로아티아의 자유와 전 공산국가 유고슬라비아로부터의 독립을 위해 지칠 줄 모르고 로비를 벌여 왔다.
저명한 학문적 업적을 쌓은 피터 프란코판과 그의 아내 제시카는 크로아티아에서 가장 큰 사립 장학금 프로그램을 운영하며 수년간 유망한 젊은 크로아티아인에게 370개, 100만 달러 이상의 보조금을 제공함으로써 크로아티아의 학술 및 문학의 촉진에 힘써왔다. 그들이 개발한 기술로 더 나은 크로아티아를 건립하자는 것이 그들의 희망이다.
그의 형 니콜라스 프란코판은 영국에서 크로아티아 세계의회를 운영하고 영국 거주 크로아티아인들의 정체성 유지를 돕고 있다. 그는 조정 국제 챔피언이자 금메달리스트이며, 최근에는 자선을 위해 무려 305km 노젓기에 동의했다.
그들의 누이 파올라 프란코판은 엘리자베스 2세 여왕의 사촌인 니콜라스 윈저 경과 결혼했으며, 고(故) 필립 대공이 그녀의 아들의 대부였다. 그녀는 크로아티아 전쟁 중에 고아원을 설립하고 1990년대 황폐해진 크로아티아 대성당을 위해 기금을 모금하는 등 크로아티아 대의에 참여해 왔다.
이 뛰어난 가문의 수장은 14권의 책을 저술한 국제법 명예 교수이자 교황 요한 바오로 2세의 고문인 고 루이스 프란코판의 아내, 잉그리드 데터 드 프란코판이다. 다른 많은 나라에도 그 나라의 역사에서 중요한 역할을 한 가족의 놀라운 이야기가 많을 것이다. 피터의 세계적인 베스트셀러가 된 세계사 이야기를 통해 프란코판 가문은 그들의 세계가 곧 전 세계이며, 업적 또한 사랑스러운 크로아티아를 훨씬 뛰어넘는다는 것을 분명히 보여주었다.
Croatia and the Frankopans
I always enjoy sitting in the charming coffee shops of the very centre of Zagreb, observing how people seem happy, well dressed, and hardly in a hurry. My favourite spot is at a small table in the cafe bar Zrinski in the well-known Frankopan Street. By listening to the topics discussed by people around me, this small cafe easily turns into a whole universe and envelops me in an amazing story-telling experience.
I just recently purchased the book The Silk Roads, written by Oxford professor of Global History, Peter Frankopan, about the importance of the ancient trade routes linking the West with Asia, and China in particular. As an Asian-American and a very frequent visitor to Europe, I can easily understand how important these proper links and roads were – like arteries connecting the whole organism that is the world. Certainly, there were not only goods that traversed these roads, but the roads themselves were crucial in bringing the world closer together. The book is a bestseller in both the West and in China, and was proclaimed Book of the Year by a number of leading British newspapers and magazines, with countless positive reviews.
I found myself wondering whether it is a coincidence that Professor Frankopan bears the same surname as the name of this famous street in Zagreb. And indeed, with the help of my Croatian friends and “Who is Who 2021”, I learned that the Frankopan family has played a crucial role in Croatian history, as well as in its political and cultural
development.
In modern times, they are part of an amazing, film-worthy family story deeply integrated with charity and humanitarian work, particularly with their permanent support of education and cultural promotion. The Frankopan family not only connects the Croatian nobility to the Holy See and other state leaderships through deeply rooted, historical connections, but also tirelessly lobbied for Croatian freedom and independence from former Communist Yugoslavia.
Alongside his prestigious academic career, Peter Frankopan and his wife Jessica run the biggest private scholarship programme in Croatia. Over the years, it has given over 370 grants to promising young Croatians worth over $1 million to promote academic and cultural dialogue. The hope is that the skills that they develop can be deployed to better Croatia.
His brother, Nicholas Frankopan, runs the Croatia World Congress in the UK, again hoping to keep the Croatian identity alive for Croatians who live and work in the UK. Nicholas Frankopan is also an international champion and gold medalist in rowing – recently agreeing to row a whopping 305 kilometres on an ergo for charity.
Their sister, Paola Frankopan, Lady Nicholas Windsor, is married to Lord Nicholas Windsor, a member of the royal family and a cousin of HM Queen Elizabeth II, and the late Prince Philip was godfather to her son. Paola has long been involved in Croatian causes, having instituted an orphanage during the war in Croatia, and raised money for a cathedral in Croatia devastated by the 1990s war.
The head of this unique family is Ingrid Detter de Frankopan, wife of the late Louis Frankopan and a remarkable lady, who is a Professor Emeritus of International Law, author of 14 books and was an advisor to Pope John Paul II.
I believe that many other countries also have similar amazing stories of the families that have played a crucial role in the countries’ histories. With Peter’s book the New Silk Road, the Frankopan family have clearly shown that their world is the World, and that their overall achievements go far beyond just my lovely Croatia.
