[아츠앤컬쳐] 매년 여름에 거행되는 베스키디 산악지방 문화 주간 행사에는, 100여 개의 민속 공연단이 수천 명의 관객들에게 공연을 선보인다. 민속 문화를 사랑하는 사람들은 9일 동안 5개 마을(비스와, 슈치르크, 지비에츠, 마쿠프 포드할란스키, 오시비엥침)에서 폴란드 및 외국 참가 팀의 야외콘서트를 감상할 수 있다. 모두 독특한 분위기를 갖고 있는 이 행사들을 다 경험하기에는 한계가 있다. 그러니 욕심내기보다는 한 곳에서 이틀 이상 길게 머무르는 것을 추천한다. 공연은 무료이며, 본 공연이 시작되기 전에는 전 관객이 베스키디 산악지방의 민요를 제창하는 모습도 볼 수 있다. 이 축제의 현장으로 여러분을 초대한다.
‘폴란드 산악지방 민속 축제’는 1970년대 이래로 베스키디 산악지방 문화 주간을 대표해온 주요 행사이다. 폴란드 산악지방 문화만이 가진 독특한 아름다움을 보여주는 축제이기에 해당 지역을 보다 깊게 이해할 수 있다. 축제 팀들은 자신의 민족과 마을의 전통을 소개하는 이 행사를 1년 전부터 열심히 준비하고, 의식과 관습의 맥락에서 그들만의 노래와 춤을 선보임으로써 옛 민족정신을 되찾고자 한다. 심사위원들은 원형극장에서 열리는 각 공연에서 의상, 음악, 안무, 의식 등을 평가하는데 그중 심사위원단이 가장 중요하게 여기는 것은 ‘진정성’이다. 주최 측이 원하는 것은 관객들이 축제를 통해 문화유산의 소중함을 다시금 기억하는 것이기 때문이다.
해당 축제의 일환으로서 지비에츠 지역에서도 가수 및 민속 악기 연주자들 간의 경연이 열린다. 폴란드 산악지방 민속 음악 거장들의 음악을 마음껏 감상할 수 있다. 동시에 지비에츠 광장에서 개최되는 ‘민속 아트 페어’는 수공예 민속품을 구매할 수 있는 기회이다.
이국적이고 잘 알려지지 않은 것은 관객들의 관심을 끌기 마련이라 외국 참가팀들은 늘 주목의 대상이다. 외국 팀들은 모든 무대에 참여하지만, 그중 두 번째 경연인 ‘국제 민속 모임’에 가장 중점을 둔다. 국제 민속 모임은 1990년도부터 비스와와 지비에츠 지역을 번갈아가며 나라별 민속 무대를 선보여온 행사다. 이 경연의 평가단은 전문가, 민족 음악학자, 민족지학자들로 구성된 ‘국제 예술 의회’이다. 공연가들은 곡, 안무, 노래, 의식과 전통 등을 포함해 그들의 국가와 지역을 대표하는 공연을 선보인다. 대상은 그중 지역 주민들의 삶을 가장 잘 표현했다고 여겨지는 팀에게 돌아간다. 평가 위원단은 전통이 보존되도록 하고자, 각 팀이 무대를 통해 의례와 관습을 어떻게 표현했는지를 중요하게 확인한다. 공연의 관객들은 공연가들을 향해 열광적인 환호를 보내고, 공연 중에서 가장 인상 깊었던 부분들을 따라하며 즐기기도 한다.

Beskidy Highlanders’ Week of Culture
Every year on the occasion of Beskidy Highlanders’ Week of Culture, several thousand performers from almost one hundred folk groups are watched by an audience of a few thousand people. This huge event is always organized in the middle of the summer. One of the most important events organized since 1970 during the Beskidy Highlanders’ Week of Culture is the Festival of Polish Highlanders’ Folklore competition presents the beauty and variety of Polish highlanders’ culture. It is a perfect opportunity for regional education. The groups prepare their performances the whole year before the final. The main idea of the competition is to present traditions of one’s own village and ethnic group. All the ensembles, try to bring back the spirit of the old world by presenting their songs and dances always in the context of rites and customs.
The Jury responsible for making sure that the main premise of the festival is followed, appraises this most important performance in the amphitheatre. Its members pay attention to the detail in costumes, music, dances, and rites. The key word is authenticity. The organizers wish to contribute to reminding people of their heritage. Another event, also organized as part of Festival of Polish Highlanders’ Folklore, in Żywiec main square, is the competition of music and singing groups, solo singers, and folk instrumentalists. It is much more intimate. This is the place where the real masters of Polish highlanders’ folklore music can be heard. It is worth mentioning that simultaneously the Folk Art Fair is organized in the Żywiec square. It is the perfect occasion to buy some genuine folk handicraft.
The exotic and the unknown are usually the most interesting for the viewers. Therefore the foreign groups are big attraction. They appear on all the festival stages, but they mainly participate in the second festival competition, International Folk Meetings. It has been organized since 1990, alternately in Wisła and Żywiec. The performers are appraised by the International Art Council, which is composed of distinguished specialists, ethnomusicologists, and ethnographers. The artists present their programmes including music, dances, songs, rites and customs typical of their countries and regions. The main prize goes to the group that best shows some scenes from the life of the given community. The jury pays the greatest attention to the manner in which rites and customs are presented to make sure that their traditional character is preserved. During the final concert, crowds of viewers enthusiastically applaud the performers. They come out several times presenting the most interesting excerpts from their shows.
