[아츠앤컬쳐] 헝가리는 올 여름 헝가리 역사상 가장 큰 행사를 개최한다. 2017년과 2022년 FINA 세계수영선수권대회를 개최한 바 있는 부다페스트는 오는 2023년 8월 19일부터 27일까지 열리는 2023년 세계육상선수권대회를 준비하고 있다. 세계육상선수권대회는 2년마다 열리는 육상경기로 올림픽게임과 함께, 국제 육상경기 중에 최고 수준의 선수권대회이다. 이번에 200여 개국에서 온 2,000명 이상의 선수들이 9일 동안 특별히 지어진 새로운 헝가리 국립육상센터에서 경쟁하게 된다.

헝가리는 풍부한 스포츠 문화가 있으며 헝가리인들 사이에 여러 스포츠가 인기가 있지만 축구는 역대 가장 인기 있는 스포츠였다. 헝가리는 1938년에 월드컵 결승전에 진출하여 2위를 차지했지만 헝가리 축구의 절정기는 “골든팀” 또는 “마법의 마자르인”으로 알려진 팀이 있던 1950년대였다.

이 팀은 나중에 레알 마드리드와 FC 바르셀로나에서 뛰었던 페렌츠 푸스카스, 졸탄 치보르, 산도르 코츠시스와 같은 뛰어난 선수들로 구성되어 있었다. 골든팀은 역동적이고 공격적인 플레이 스타일을 선보이며 놀라운 성공을 거두었다. 이들과 뛰어난 다른 선수들이 있던 헝가리팀은 1954년 스위스에서 열린 FIFA 월드컵 결승전에 진출했다. 그들은 박진감 넘치는 축구로 브라질과 우루과이 같은 강팀도 차례로 이겼다. 그러나 그들은 결승전에서 서독에 패했고, 세계 챔피언 자리를 아슬아슬하게 놓쳤다. 비록 헝가리가 월드컵에서 우승하지는 못했지만 이 국가대표팀은 올림픽에서 3개의 금메달을 획득하는 데 성공했다. 헝가리는 1952년 헬싱키 올림픽과 1964년 도쿄 올림픽에서 우승을 차지했으며 1968년 멕시코시티에서 트로피를 지켜냈다.

모든 선수 중에서 페렌츠 푸스카스는 단연코 헝가리에서 가장 유명한 축구 선수였다. 그는 골든팀의 성공에 중요한 역할을 했으며 역사상 가장 위대한 선수 중 한 명으로 간주된다. 푸스카스는 놀라운 골 득점 능력을 가지고 있었고 계속하여 레알 마드리드에서 놀라운 클럽 경력을 이어갔다.

헝가리인의 또 다른 큰 사랑은 하계 올림픽이다. 4년마다 개최되는 올림픽 기간에는 몇 주 동안 세상이 멈춘 듯 모두가 화면에 매달리게 된다. 헝가리는 총 메달 집계에서 꾸준히 상위권에 속하는 나라다. 1896년 아테네부터 도쿄에 이르기까지 헝가리는 하계 올림픽에서 총 523개의 메달(금 183개, 은 157개, 동 183개)을 획득했다. 이로 인해 헝가리는 인구 규모에 비해 올림픽 성공률이 높은 상위 국가에 속한다. 헝가리에서는 수상스포츠, 육상, 펜싱이 가장 인기가 있지만 무엇보다도 수구에 열광적이다. 남자 수구는 2000년 시드니, 2004년 아테네, 2008년 베이징에서 3회 연속 정상에 오른 유일한 종목이다.

위에서 알 수 있듯이 헝가리인들은 스포츠와 스포츠 행사에 열광적이다. 이것이 최근 몇 년 동안 헝가리가 가능한 한 많은 주요 스포츠 행사를 개최하는 이유이다. 헝가리는 세계육상선수권대회 부다페스트 2023를 통해 최고의 독특한 무대에서 진정한 스포츠 축제를 전 세계에 선사하고자 한다. 이번에 중부 유럽에서 처음으로 가장 중요한 육상경기가 열리는 것이며, 부다페스트는 세계문화유산과 훌륭한 파노라마로 선수와 팬들 모두에게 완벽한 무대를 제공할 것이다.

World Athletics Championships in Budapest and Hungarian sport heritage in a nutshell

Hungary hosts the biggest event in the country’s history this summer. After giving place to the FINA World Championships in 2017 and 2022, Budapest now is preparing for the 2023 World Athletics Championships that will be held between 19-27 August 2023. The World Athletics Championships are a biennial athletics competition. Alongside the Olympic Games, they represent the highest level championships of senior international outdoor athletics competition for track and field athletics globally. On this occasion more than 2,000 athletes from over 200 countries will come to Hungary for 9 days and will compete in the brand new, purpose-built National Athletics Centre.

Hungary has a rich sporting culture, and several sports are popular among Hungarians, but football (soccer) has been the most popular of all times. Hungary played in the world cup final and came in second as early as in 1938, but the greatest footballing era came in the 1950s when the country had a team known as the "Golden Team" or "Magical Magyars."

The team featured exceptional players like Ferenc Puskás, Zoltán Czibor, and Sándor Kocsis, who all played later in Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. The Golden Team showcased a dynamic and attacking style of play and achieved remarkable success. With them and other brilliant players Hungary reached the final of the FIFA World Cup in 1954, held in Switzerland. They played a thrilling brand of football and defeated strong teams like Brazil and Uruguay along the way. However, they lost to West Germany in the final, narrowly missing out on becoming World Champions. In spite of the fact that Hungary never became a world champion, the National Team has been successful in Olympic football, winning three gold medals. Hungary triumphed at the Olympic Games in 1952 in Helsinki 1952, and in Tokyo in 1964, and they defended their trophy in Mexico City in 1968. From all of the players, Ferenc Puskás was arguably Hungary's most celebrated footballer. He played a vital role in the success of the Golden Team and he is considered one of the greatest players of all time. Puskás had incredible goal-scoring ability and went on to have a remarkable club career with Real Madrid.

The other great love of Hungarians are the Summer Olympic Games. Usually, life stops for a few weeks every four years during the games and everyone hangs on the screens. Hungary has consistently ranked among the top nations in terms of total medal count. Starting to count from 1896 Athens and up to Tokyo, Hungary had won a total of 523 medals in the Summer Olympics (183 gold, 157 silver, and 183 bronze). This places Hungary among the top countries in terms of Olympic success relative to its population size. Water sports, athletics and fencing are the most popular, but first and most of all, people are obsessed with water polo in which the men’s team won Olympic gold 9 times, being the most successful nation in the sport’s Olympic history, and also the only one which reached the top 3 times in a row in Sydney, Athens, and Beijing in 2000, 2004 and 2008.

As the above shows, Hungarians are crazy about sports and sporting events. This is why the country's aim in recent years is to host as many major sporting events as possible. The World Athletics Championships Budapest 2023 are about showing the world the best that Hungary has to offer, a true celebration of sport on a unique stage. It is the first time that Central Europe will play host to the most important event of athletics, and with its world heritage sites and incredible panorama, Budapest is set to provide the perfect backdrop for athletes and fans alike.
