[아츠앤컬쳐] ‘리게트’는 헝가리 수도에서 가장 오래된 도시 공원 중 하나로 공원, 숲이라는 뜻이다. 이 공원은 주민들과 관광객 모두에게 인기 있는 휴식처이며 200년의 풍부한 역사가 있다. 전성기에 공원은 1896년 카르파티아 분지에서 헝가리 1,000주년을 기념하기 위한 밀레니엄 전시회의 장소가 되기도 했다. 밀레니엄 전시회는 예술, 산업 및 문화를 포함한 각계 분야에서 헝가리의 성과를 보여주기 위한 대규모 국제 행사로, 헝가리의 풍부한 역사, 문화 유산 및 국가 발전을 강조했다.

전시회 기간 동안 다양한 파빌리온이 건설되었는데, 미술관과 예술궁전을 비롯하여 157년 역사를 가진 부다페스트 동물원, 유명한 세체니 온천과 함께 부다페스트에서 여전히 중요한 문화 기관으로 남아있는 곳들이다.

2010년 직후, 헝가리 정부는 새로운 박물관 지구를 만들기 위해 ‘리게트 부다페스트’라는 새로운 프로젝트를 시작하기로 결정했다. 이 프로젝트는 유럽에서 가장 크고 야심찬 도시 문화 개발로, 부다페스트의 가장 상징적인 공공 공원을 완전히 새롭게 개조하면서도 200년의 역사의 온전한 존중을 목표로 한다.

리게트 부다페스트 프로젝트의 주요 목표는 새로운 박물관 건물의 건설, 역사적인 건물의 보수, 녹지 공간의 조성, 그리고 공원 인프라의 개선이다. 이 프로젝트는 문화 유산, 자연 환경 및 현대 건축의 조화로운 융합을 만들기 위한 것이며, 새로운 미술관, 민족학 박물관, 그리고 헝가리 음악의 집과 같은 여러 새로운 박물관의 건설을 포함한다. 또한 공산주의 시대에 파괴된 상징적인 건물들의 재건도 포함되어 있다. 이 새로운 박물관들은 헝가리와 국제 예술, 건축, 문화 역사 및 음악의 다양한 측면을 선보이기 위한 것이다.

이 중에 민족학 박물관과 헝가리 음악의 집은 이미 완공되었으며 국제 언론의 큰 관심을 끌고 많은 국제 상을 수상한 바 있다. 예를 들어 헝가리 음악의 집은 2022년 3월 17일 칸에서 개최된 이른바 ‘부동산 산업의 오스카’인 세계 최고 권위의 부동산 산업 전시회 MIPIM Awards에서 심사위원 대상을 수상했다. 소우 후지모토가 디자인한 음악의 집은 이전에 런던에서 개최된 국제부동산어워즈와 아메리칸뮤직시티어워즈에서 최고로 인정받은 바 있으며, CNN, World Architecture, 그리고 세계적인 이벤트 가이드 Time Out 매거진에서 세계에서 가장 기대되는 10대 건물 중 하나로 선정되기도 했다.

프랭크 게리가 디자인한 구겐하임 미술관이 빌바오에서 개관된 이후, 대부분의 도시 계획가들은 이른바 ‘빌바오 효과’를 염두에 두고 있다. 비록 두 사례를 비교할 수는 없지만, 이미 부다페스트는 70개 이상의 박물관을 보유하고 있으며 독특한 건축과 함께 2023년 트립어드바이저에서 7위로 선정된 최고의 문화 관광지다. 이 프로젝트의 창시자들은 새로운 박물관 지구가 완공된 후 독특한 건축과 문화적 혜택으로 연간 100만 명에 가까운 방문객을 창출할 것으로 보고 있다.

2023년 9월에는 리게트 부다페스트 프로젝트가 서울도시건축비엔날레에 참가하여 프로젝트에 관해 더 많이 알아볼 특별한 기회를 제공하는데, 역사적인 용산 기지 재개발을 추진하고 있는 서울시에 본보기가 될 것이다.

Liget Budapest Project – The new museum district of the Hungarian Capital

Liget means park or grove in Hungarian, and „Liget” is one of the oldest city parks of the Hungarian capital. The park is not only a popular recreational area for both locals and tourists but also has a rich 200-year-old history.

In its heyday, the park gave place to the Millennium Exhibition that took place in 1896 to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the Hungarian presence in the Carpathian Basin. The Millennium Exhibition was a grand international event held in „Liget” to showcase Hungary's achievements in various fields, including art, industry, and culture. The exhibition aimed to highlight Hungary's rich history, cultural heritage, and progress as a nation. During the exhibition, numerous pavilions were constructed including the Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace of Art, which still stand as important cultural institutions in Budapest together with the 157 years old Budapest Zoo and the famous Széchenyi Thermal Bath.

Shortly after 2010, the Hungarian government decided to initiate a new project, called „Liget Budapest”, to create a new museum district. The Liget Budapest Project, Europe’s largest and most ambitious urban cultural development envisions the complete renewal of Budapest's most iconic public park, while fully respecting the park’s 200-year-old heritage.

The main objectives of the Liget Budapest Project include the construction of new museum buildings, renovation of historic buildings, creation of green spaces, and the improvement of the park's infrastructure. The project is intended to create a harmonious blend of cultural heritage, natural surroundings, and modern architecture and involves the construction of several new museum buildings, such as a new Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Ethnography, and the House of Music Hungary. The renovation also includes the rebuilding of some iconic buildings, which were destroyed in the communist era. These new museums aim to showcase various aspects of Hungarian and international art, architecture, cultural history, and music.

Some of these buildings like the Museum of Ethnography and House of Music Hungary have already been completed and have attracted a lot of attention in the international press and have won a lot of international awards. The House of Music Hungary for example won the jury’s main prize on 17 March 2022 in Cannes at the world’s leading and most highly esteemed property industry exhibition, MIPIM Awards, also called the „Oscar of property industry”. The Sou Fujimoto-designed House of Music had previously been recognized among the best at the high-ranking International Property Awards in London and the American Music Cities Awards, while CNN, World Architecture, and the leading international event guide, Time Out magazine, named it one of the world’s ten most anticipated buildings.

Since the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum was inaugurated in Bilbao most urban planners bear in mind the so-called „Bilbao Effect”. Even if the two cases cannot be compared, since Budapest already gives place to more than 70 museums, unique architecture and is also ranked the 7th best cultural destination (Tripadvisor 2023), the initiators of the project calculate that the new museum district after its completion will generate close to a million more visitors annually thanks to its unique architecture and cultural offer.

In September 2023, the Liget Budapest Project will be one of the guests at the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism which provides a special opportunity to learn more about the project and perhaps set an example for the city of Seoul, which is now ahead of redeveloping its historic Yongsan base.
