[아츠앤컬쳐] 예술, 특히 음악은 인간만이 할 수 있는 특별한 활동이라고 한다. 그 중에서 합창이야말로 원초적인 목소리로 하모니를 만들고, 영혼을 울리게 하는 인간만이 할 수 있는, 가장 고귀한 창작 활동 중 하나이다.

루벤 톨마쵸프와 올레나 솔로베이는 우크라이나의 커플 음악가이다. 둘다 키이우 음악학교와 국립음악대학을 졸업하였고, 올레나 솔로베이는 10년 이상 교회 합창단을 이끌며 음악 학교 여성 합창단의 지휘자로서 활동하였으며 이를 바탕으로 자신의 프로젝트인 청소년 합창단인 ‘Kyiv Pechersk Lavra’를 창립하여 수많은 국제 대회에서 우승하였다. 또한, 루벤 톨마쵸프는 유명한 작곡가이자인 블라디슬라브 톨마쵸프의 아들로서 우크라이나 합창단의 지휘자 및 가수 및 작곡가이자 우크라이나 명예 예술가, 소년 합창단 ‘Dzvinochok’의 예술 감독 및 아카펠라 6 중주 MENSOUND, 국립 합창 지휘과 부교수 및 우크라이나 음악 아카데미, 국제 콩쿠르 심사위원이며 All-Ukrainian Society 어린이 합창단 ‘TONICA’의 책임자이고 합창단을 위한 수많은 작곡의 저자이기도 하다.

이러한 화려한 경력의 루벤과 올레나는 러시아와의 전쟁 이후 유럽 도시를 순회하고 있다. 12년 전 유명 TV 프로젝트 ‘Clash of Choirs’를 통한 만남으로 부터 시작된 그들의 인연은 현재 그들은 “뮤지컬 미팅”. “크리슴스 울림” 등의 두 개의 연례 축제와 많은 프로젝트, 그리고 연극 및 합창 공연 등을 공동으로 관리하는 것으로 이어지고 있다.

전쟁 이후 유럽 지역을 순회하며 공연을 이어가는 루벤과 올레나에게 모든 공연은 특별한 의미를 갖고 있다. 루벤과 올레나의 유럽 순회 공연은 현재 100여 회에 이르며, 공연을 통해 만난 관객은 ‘롤링 스톤즈’와의 콜라보레이션과 유럽 도시 중앙 광장에서 펼쳐진 수많은 공연을 감안하면 약 12만 명에 이른다. 그들은 공연을 통해 우크라이나 군대와 러시아 침략의 결과로 고통받는 어린이들을 위한 기금을 마련하고, 우크라이나의 민족 문화를 홍보하며, 전쟁의 부당함에 대해 음악으로 대항하고 있다.

그들의 평생에 걸친 합창과 젊은 음악가를 배출해내는데에 대한 헌신은 전세계에 걸쳐 몇천 번의 콘서트와 몇백 명의 젊은 가수들 그리고 수십명의 학생들이 그들의 창작 활동에 영감을 받아 예술의 세계에 발을 딛게 하는 결과물을 낳았다.

“어려운 시기에 우리의 주요 목표는 우리 문화와 그 가치를 알리고 그리고 어떠한 경우에도 우리가 광인의 손에 죽어서는 안 된다는 사실에 대해 이야기하는 것입니다. 우리 군인들을 위해 매일 기도하며, 그들을 통하여 우리가 우리의 일을 해낼 수 있도록 매일 기도합니다.”

Harmony for Victory: Ruben Tolmachov and Olena Solovey

Art, especially music, is said to be a unique activity that only humans can perform. Among them, choral singing is truly one of the noblest creative activities, where primitive voices come together to create harmony and touch the soul, something that only humans can do.

Ruben Tolmachov and Olena Solovey are couple musicians from Ukraine. Both received professional education at the Kyiv Music School in the class of Professor Halyna Horbatenko and the National Academy of Music, Olena Solovei worked for more than 10 years as the regent of the church choir, the second conductor of the Women's Choir of the Music School, and later created her own project - "Youth Choir" of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, with which she became the winner of numerous international competitions.

Ruben Tolmachov - son of the famous composer Vladyslav Tolmachov - Ukrainian choirmaster, singer and composer - Honored Artist of Ukraine, artistic director of the boys' choir "Dzvinochok" and a cappella sextet MENSOUND, associate professor of the department of choral conducting of the National Music Academy of Ukraine, member of the jury of international competitions, head of the All-Ukrainian Society children's choir "TONICA", author of numerous compositions for the choir.

Following the war with Russia, Ruben and Olena, with their illustrious careers, have been touring European cities. Ruben and Olena's European tour performances have now surpassed 100 shows, and considering collaborations with the 'Rolling Stones' and numerous performances on central squares of European cities, the audiences they have reached amount to around 120,000 people. Through their performances, they have been raising funds for children suffering from the consequences of the Ukrainian military and the Russian invasion. They also promote Ukrainian national culture and use music as a means to stand up against the injustice of the war.

Historically, choral music has been closely intertwined with church life, and similarly, much of the choral repertoire in Ruben and Olena's performances is connected to these precedents. They sing sacred religious music from Ukraine and Europe, spanning from Orthodoxy, Protestantism, and Catholicism to the Renaissance and modern times.

While leading the girls' choir "Vognyk" and the boys' choir "Dzvinochok", they are essentially secular groups, but many children who participate in these choirs also sing in church choirs, emphasizing the strong connection between choral music and church involvement.

Their lifelong dedication to choral music and nurturing young musicians has resulted in thousands of concerts worldwide, hundreds of young singers, and dozens of students finding inspiration in their creative activities and stepping into the world of art.

“Our main goal in this difficult time is to talk about our culture, about its value, about the fact that it should not die at the hands of madmen. We pray every day for our soldiers to enable us to do our work.”
