[아츠앤컬쳐] 디자인은 어디에서 나오는 것인가. 아름다움의 기준과 새로운 것을 창작하는 디자인의 원천은 어디에서 비롯되는가. 디자이너는 저마다의 감성과 디자인 철학을 가지고 창작물을 통해 세상과 소통하고, 자신의 이야기를 들려준다.

YAKUSHA 스튜디오와 라이브 디자인 컬렉션 FAINA의 창립자인 빅토리아 야쿠샤는 우크라이나 출신의 건축가이자 디자이너로서 간결하면서도 감각적인 접근으로 우크라이나 고유의 전통과 공예기법, 그리고 땅의 상징들을 사용하여 새로운 컬렉션을 탄생시킨다. “라이브 미니멀리즘”이라고 불리우는 그녀만의 독특한 스타일은 우크라이나의 문화 유산과 상징을 작품에 반영하며, 역사와 신화, 예술과 철학 등에서 영감을 받아 탄생된다.

우크라이나의 토양을 상징하는 2미터 길이의 수공예 테이프스트리 Zemlia, 버드나무 덩굴을 사용하는 우크라이나 전통가옥의 지붕에서 영감을 받은 STRIKHA 시리즈 Loza, 풍요로운 우크라이나 땅의 상징으로 땅에서 뻗어나와 줄기가 하늘까지 쭉 뻗어나간 Soniah(우크라이나어 해바라기) 플로어 램프를 통해 그녀만의 세상을 만날 수 있다.

또한 그녀는 사라져가는 우크라이나의 공예기술과 문화유산에 주목하기 위해 “Land inspires”라는 디자인 원정을 통해 우크라이나의 여러 지역을 탐색하며 고대 장인들과 협력하여 새로운 디자인을 창조한다. “라이브 미니멀리즘”이라고 불리우는 그녀의 이러한 디자인 작업과 철학은 우크라이나의 전통 의식과 풍습을 현대적인 기법으로 재창조하고 세계와 공유한다.

그녀는 흙, 나무, 양모 등의 재료를 사용하여 우크라이나의 오랜 유산을 바탕으로 간결하지만 감각적인 접근으로 새로운 컬렉션으로 재탄생시켰다. 그녀는 지속 가능하고 재활용 가능한 재료를 사용함으로써 각각의 물체에 생명력과 이야기를 담는다. 결국 그녀의 디자인 작업은 사용자와 감성적인 연결을 만들어 내면의 자아와 재결합을 보여주는 것이다. 그녀의 건축과 인테리어 디자인 철학은 Collectible Fair, Milan Design Week, Venice Biennale, Dutch design week 등에 발표되었다. 2019년에 우크라이나에서 올해의 인테리어 디자이너의 영예를 안고, 그녀의 인테리어도 세계 5대 오피스 중 하나로 선정되었다.

“우리는 우리가 사는 곳에서 영감을 받습니다. 우리는 우리가 사랑하는 것들을 만듭니다. 우리는 우리가 만든 것들을 사랑합니다.” 그녀는 우크라이나의 역사, 신화, 예술, 철학 등에서 영감을 받고, 우크라이나의 전설적인 영웅, 상징, 풍습 등을 현대적으로 재해석하여 새로운 의미와 가치를 부여하며, 사라져가는 우크라이나의 공예기술과 문화유산에 주목하고 보존하기 위해 여러 지역의 전문가들과 협력하며 새로운 디자인을 창조한다.

디자인은 어디에서 나오는 것인가. 그것은 현재 살고 있는 삶에 주목하고, 뿌리를 알며, 그 안에 숨쉬는 문화에 깊은 경외감을 바탕으로 할 것이다. 결국 디자인의 원천은 우크라이나의 오랜 역사를 바탕으로 하는 시간속의 사람들, 그 안에서의 이야기, 그것을 원천으로 하는 삶에 대한 열정과 사랑이 아름다움을 창조해내는 것이 아닌가 싶다.

Creating from the land, roots and heritage

Where does design originate? What is the source of the standards for beauty and the creation of new designs? Designers each have their own sensibilities and design philosophies, and they communicate with the world and share their stories through their creations.

Victoria Yakusha is Ukrainian architect and designer, the founder of a multidisciplinary studio YAKUSHA and a brand of furniture, décor and lightning FAINA. She approaches her work with a simple but sensuous style, incorporating Ukraine's unique traditions, craftsmanship, and the symbolism of the land into her new collections.

Her distinctive style, often referred to as "live minimalism," incorporates elements of Ukraine's cultural heritage and symbolism, drawing inspiration from history, mythology, art, and philosophy. We can meet her world through her creations including a 2-meter handmade tapestry named Zemlia, symbolizing Ukraine's soil, and LOZA which is the STRIKHA series inspired by the roofs of ancestral Ukraininan dwellings made by the tradition of working with willow-vine, also a symbol of prolific Ukrainian earth, primitive Soniah floor lamps stem from the ground stretching their tall sculptural stalks up to the sky.

For the purpose to preserve vanishing Ukrainian craftsmanship and cultural heritage, Victoria embarks on a design expedition called "Land Inspires." This initiative involves exploring various regions of Ukraine, collaborating with ancient craftsmen, and creating new designs.

Her "live minimalism" style and philosophy aim to reinterpret Ukrainian traditions and rituals with modern techniques, sharing them with the world. She sues materials like soil, wood and wool, creating from Ukraine's old heritage to breathe new life into her collections with a straightforward sensuous approach. By using sustainable and recyclable materials, she infuses each object with vitality and narrative. Ultimately, her design work seeks to establish an emotional connection between people and their inside, promoting a reconnection with their essence.

Her architectural and interior design philosophy, which encourages a minimal but sensuous approach, is designed to make people feel the soul of each creations. Her works have been showcased at various prestigious events such as the Collectible Fair, Milan Design Week, Venice Biennale, and Dutch Design Week. In 2019, she was honored as Ukraine's Interior Designer of the Year, and her interior designs have been recognized as among the world's top five offices.

She creates inspiration from Ukraine's history, mythology, art, and philosophy, incorporating these elements into her work. She reinterprets Ukraine's legendary heroes, symbols, and traditions in a contemporary context, imparting new meanings and values. Additionally, she focuses on preserving Ukraine's craftsmanship and cultural heritage by collaborating with artisans from different regions to create innovative designs.

Where does design originate?

It would be based on paying attention to the life we ​​currently live, knowing our roots, and a deep sense of reverence for the culture that lives within it. Ultimately, it is the passion and love for life, the land, the people within, and the stories that originate from them, which form the source of beauty in design.
