이 섬의 이름이기도 한 구시가지 랍은 잘 보존된 중세풍의 레이아웃, 조약돌 거리, 그리고 눈에 띄는 건축물로 수세기의 역사를 생생하게 보여준다. 랍의 파수꾼이라 불리는 상징적인 4개의 종탑은 스카이라인을 아름답게 강조하며 방문객들을 미로 같은 골목길로 안내한다. 또한, 12세기 로마네스크 건축양식의 경이로운 세인트 마리 대성당이 정신적이고 예술적인 등대 역할을 한다.

랍섬은 연중 다양한 축제를 개최하여 음악, 와인, 음식, 지역 풍습을 기념하며 방문객들을 활기찬 지역사회와 이어준다. 랍 마을의 문화 명소는 1364년부터 내려온 중세 축제 ‘랍스카 피예라’다. 2002년, 랍 마을은 현지인과 방문객 모두를 위하여 첫 중세 축제를 부활시켰다. 매년 7월에 열리는 이 중세 축제는 랍 마을을 중세를 벗어나 북적거리는 시장으로 바꾸어놓는다.

이 축제는 3일 동안 섬의 중세 생활과 주민들의 전통 공예를 선보이는 것을 목표로 한다. 여기에는 특별히 준비된 정통 음식, 지역 특산품, 중세 의상을 입고 거리를 거니는 사람들과 함께, 행사의 클라이막스로 랍스카 피예라의 마지막 날에 기사 토너먼트가 열린다. 광장 위의 대포는 랍스카 피예라의 시작과 끝을 알리며 랍의 옛 마을을 웅장한 무대로 만든다. 참가자들은 기수, 석궁병, 무용수, 귀족 등의 의상을 입고 역할을 맡는다. 기사도 경기는 1597년에 도입된 석궁을 사용하는데, 이 석궁은 부활한 랍 석궁사수협회의 공로다.

이 기념 행사는 도시의 수호자인 성 크리스토퍼의 축일 즈음에 열린다. 성 크리스토퍼의 휴일 전야 행렬은 역사 깊은 세인트 마리 대성당을 향해 도시 거리들을 휘감고 지나가며 지역사회의 사회적 유대감을 높이 표현한다.

랍스카 피예라의 보존은 어른과 아이, 현지인과 관광객 모두에게 다른 세계로 독특한 몰입을 제공하면서, 예술과 문화가 자연과 역사와 매끄럽게 얽혀있는 아름다운 장소라는 것을 보여주는 또 다른 증거다. 심지어 로마인들도 랍을 행복의 섬, 즉 ‘펠릭스 아르바(Felix Arba)’라고 불렀다. 자연, 아름다움, 사람, 그리고 풍부한 문화유산을 경험하고 나면 우리가 그를 진정으로 믿는다는 것은 의심의 여지가 없다.

The Island of Rab: Where History, Culture, and Nature Converge for Authentic Experiences

Croatia is deeply committed to sustainable tourism, preserving its cultural and natural heritage, and ensuring the well-being of its local population, providing visitors with authentic experiences and cultural immersion.

One of the best examples of such an approach to tourism in Croatia is on the Island of Rab. Nestled in the crystalline waters of the Adriatic Sea, Rab Island is famous for its beautiful beaches and stunning natural landscapes. However, beyond its picturesque shores, this Croatian gem also boasts a vibrant cultural heritage.

The picturesque old town of Rab, which gave the island its name is a living testament to centuries of history, with its well-preserved medieval layout, cobblestone streets, and striking architecture. The town's four iconic bell towers, known as Rab's sentinels, proudly punctuate the skyline, guiding visitors through the labyrinthine alleys. The Cathedral of St. Mary, a marvel of Romanesque architecture dating back to the 12th century, stands as a spiritual and artistic beacon.

Rab Island hosts diverse festivals year-round, celebrating music, wine, food, and local customs to connect visitors with the vibrant community. The central attraction in the cultural offerings of the town of Rab is the medieval festival known as the 'Rabska fjera,' which was first held in 1364. Starting in 2002, the town of Rab has revived the country's inaugural medieval festival, bringing joy to locals and visitors alike. Held each July, this medieval festival transforms Rab Town into a bustling marketplace straight out of the Middle Ages.

Over the course of three days, the aim is to showcase what life was like in the Middle Ages on the island and the traditional crafts the islanders practiced. This includes savoring specially prepared authentic food, local products, people in medieval costumes strolling the streets, and the climax of the event being a knightly tournament held on the last day of the Rabska Fjera.

A cannon above the square marks the start and end of Rabska Fjera, where the old town of Rab becomes a grand stage. Participants don costumes and roles, including standard bearers, crossbowmen, dancers, and nobility. The knightly games use crossbows, introduced in 1597, with credit to the Rab Crossbowmen's Association for their revival.

These celebrations are held around the feast of St. Christopher, the patrons of the city. The procession on the eve of the patron saint's holiday, winding through the city streets towards the old Cathedral of St. Mary, was the highest expression of the strength of social bonds within the community.

The preservation of the Rabska fjera is yet another testament to how Rab is a beautiful place where art and culture seamlessly intertwine with nature and history, providing both adults and children, locals and tourists, a unique immersion in different worlds. Even the Romans named Rab the island of happiness, i.e., 'Felix Arba.' There's no doubt that we truly believe in it once we experience its nature, beauty, people, and rich cultural heritage.
