[아츠앤컬쳐] 폴란드에서는 10세기부터 현재까지 부활절을 매우 중요하게 여기며 오래된 가톨릭 명절로 기리고 있다. 이 명절은 종교적 의식 외에도 가정에서 다양한 전통을 지켜 나가며 가족과 함께 소중한 시간을 보내는 특별한 날이다. 아래 몇 가지의 부활절 전통을 소개해 보려 한다.

먼저, 종려주일은 종려나무 가지를 교회로 가져가는 날이다. 폴란드 부활절에 사용되는 종려나무 가지는 가늘고 키가 크며, 길쭉한 꽃다발 모양을 하고 있다. 종려나무에는 전통적으로 버드나무 가지도 함께 장식되며, 다양한 색의 리본과 티슈 종이, 종이꽃 등으로 꾸며진다.

몇몇 폴란드 도시에서는 가장 아름다운 종려나무를 가려내는 대회가 열리기도 한다. 또한, 많은 교구에서 예수님이 나귀를 타고 예루살렘에 입성하신 것을 기념하기 위해 특별한 행렬이 열리며, 이때 어린이들은 종려나무 가지를 들고 소리 높여 행렬을 맞이하며 즐거운 시간을 보낸다.

다음으로, 부활절 바구니는 부활절의 상징 중 하나이다. 고리버들로 만들어진 이 바구니에는 성 토요일에 축복을 받은 음식들이 가득 담겨 있는데, 빵, 달걀, 고기, 소금, 홀스래디쉬, 양 모형이 포함된다. 특히 다양한 무늬와 기술로 장식된 부활절 달걀은 자연의 소생과 기독교의 부활에 대한 믿음에서 비롯된 희망을 상징한다.

성주일 아침에는 온 가족이 식탁에 둘러앉아 아침 식사를 즐긴다. 전통적인 부활절 요리인 흰 소시지, 냉육, 마주렉 케이크, 부활절 케이크, 그리고 쥬렉 수프로 식탁을 차리며, 식사 전에는 달걀을 나누며 서로 부활절 소원을 기원한다.

마지막으로, 성 월요일에는 서로에게 물을 뿌리는 전통이 이어지고 있다. 예전에는 총각만이 소녀들에게 물을 뿌릴 수 있었지만, 요즘에는 가족, 친구, 누구에게나 물을 뿌릴 수 있어 어린이와 청소년들에게 큰 즐거움을 선사한다.

이러한 전통 덕분에 폴란드의 부활절은 독특하고, 매우 맛있는 음식에, 즐겁고 다채로운 날이다!

Easter traditions in Poland

Easter is the most important and the oldest Christian celebration, celebrated in Poland since the 10th century. It is a special time spent with family, which, in addition to religious rituals, is also accompanied by numerous traditions cultivated in every home. Below are some of them.

The first one is Palm Sunday. On this day, believers bring palms to churches. Polish Easter palms are most often slim, quite tall, vertical bouquets. According to tradition, the palm should also contain willow branches. Palms are additionally decorated with colorful ribbons and artificial flowers made of tissue paper or paper. Many cities organized competitions for the most beautiful and tallest palm. Many parishes hold special processions to commemorate Jesus' entry into Jerusalem on a donkey, when children greeted him with palm twigs and joyful shouts.

The Easter basket is one of the basic symbols of Easter. It consists of a wicker basket filled with foods that are blessed in the church on Holy Saturday. The Easter basket should include: bread, eggs, meat, salt, a lamb figurine and horseradish. Easter eggs are colorful eggs decorated with various techniques and patterns. They are intended to symbolize nature coming to life, and in Christianity, they additionally mean hope resulting from faith in the resurrection of Christ.

On Holy Sunday, all household members gather at the table in the morning to sit down for a ceremonial breakfast. According to tradition, all dishes should be tasted during this festive meal. The table must include soup żurek with white sausage, cold meats, mazurek cake and Easter cake. Before starting the meal, everyone share the egg with their loved ones and wish each other Easter wishes.

Lastly there is Holy Monday, the second day of Easter. It is a tradition to throw water on each other on this day. In the past, only bachelors could throw water on girls. But nowadays, you can pour water on anyone, especially family members and friends, which is great fun for children and teenagers. 

Thanks to this traditions, Easter in Poland is unique, and also very tasty, cheerful and colorful!
