[아츠앤컬쳐] 헝가리 화가 Tibor Simon-Mazula의 작품을 선보이는 현대회화 전시가 4월 30일 리스트 헝가리 화원에서 개막했다. 예술의전당에서 4개월간 열렸던 ‘빅토르 바자렐리’전에서 헝가리국립미술관의 소장품 200여 점의 전시회를 마친 후 일주일 만에 열리는 것이다.

헝가리 회화는 수세기에 걸쳐 여러 예술사조의 영향을 받아 풍부하고 다양한 역사를 가지고 있다. 중세 프레스코화부터 현대 아방가르드 작품에 이르기까지 헝가리 예술가들은 유럽미술에 큰 공헌을 해왔다. 헝가리 회화에서 가장 두드러진 시기 중 하나는 헝가리 낭만주의 시대로 알려진 19세기로, Mihály Munkácsy, Pál Szinyei Merse와 같은 예술가들이 헝가리 풍경의 아름다움과 헝가리 국민의 정신을 담아내며 중요한 역할을 했다.

20세기 초, 헝가리 회화는 표현주의와 입체파와 같은 운동의 출현으로 혁신과 실험의 시기를 거쳤다. 헝가리 화가이자 사진작가인 László Moholy-Nagy는 예술, 공예, 기술의 통합을 강조한 바우하우스 운동의 발전에 중추적인 역할을 했다.

전쟁 기간에 헝가리 회화는 야외 회화와 자연으로의 회귀를 강조한 Nagybánya 예술가 집단이 등장하면서 계속 발전했으며, István Szőnyi와 Béla Czóbel 같은 예술가들이 여기에 속한다. 제2차 세계대전 이후 헝가리 회화는 공산주의 통치하에 어려움을 겪었고, 예술가들은 종종 사회주의 리얼리즘의 범위 내에서 작업했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 예술적 표현의 한계를 뛰어넘은 주목할 만한 인물들이 여전히 존재했다. 추상화는 1960년대부터 1980년대까지 인기를 끌었고, 수십 년이 지난 후 2022년 FRIEZE 아트페어의 부대 행사로 헝가리 추상화가들이 서울에 소개되면서 다시금 인기를 끌기 시작했다.

20세기 말과 21세기 초, 헝가리 회화는 예술가들이 여러 스타일과 주제를 탐구하면서 점점 더 다양해졌다. István Sándorfi와 István Felsmann과 같은 현대 헝가리 화가들은 매체에 대한 혁신적인 접근 방식으로 계속해서 국제적인 호평을 받고 있다.

국제적으로 활발히 활동 중인 신예 아티스트 중 한 명인 Tibor Simon-Mazula도 헝가리 문화원에서 6월 말까지 개인전을 개최한다. 그의 작품은 독특한 예술 철학과 뚜렷한 예술적 비전으로 주목받고 있는데, 깊은 철학적 사유와 풍부한 감성을 결합하여 현실과 초현실주의 사이의 섬세한 균형을 추구한다. 이러한 접근 방식은 그의 예술적 경험을 더욱 특별하고 뚜렷하게 만들고 있다.

Simon-Mazula의 예술 작품은 기억과 꿈, 의식과 무의식 사이의 경계를 탐구하면서 다양한 색상, 질감, 형태를 통해 인간 경험의 복잡성을 표현한다. 그의 작품은 정서적 깊이를 표현하는 동시에 인간 존재의 의미와 본질에 대한 질문을 관객에게 던진다. 이러한 접근 방식은 단순한 시각 예술을 넘어 인간의 경험과 사고에 대한 탐구로 확장하여 관객의 지속적인 공감을 이끌어내고 있다.

Simon-Mazula는 대만 아트페어에서 3년 연속 매진을 기록했으며, 지난해 한국 시장에 그의 작품이 소개되면서 큰 주목을 받았다. 이러한 성공은 그의 작품이 국제적 인지도가 좋음을 보여준다.

Permanent presence of Hungarian contemporary painting in Seoul

A new contemporary painting exhibition opened at Liszt Institute – Hungarian Cultural Center on April 30, featuring the works of Hungarian painter Tibor Simon-Mazula. It opened only after a week of closure the four-month-long Victor Vasarely exhibition at the Seoul Arts Center, which showcased nearly 200 pieces from the Hungarian Museum of Fine Arts.

Hungarian painting has a rich and diverse history, influenced by various artistic movements throughout the centuries. From medieval frescoes to contemporary avant-garde works, Hungarian artists have made significant contributions to European art. One of the most prominent periods in Hungarian painting is the 19th century, known as the Hungarian Romantic Era. Artists such as Mihály Munkácsy and Pál Szinyei Merse played key roles during this time, capturing the beauty of the Hungarian landscape and the spirit of its people.

In the early 20th century, Hungarian painting underwent a period of innovation and experimentation, with the emergence of movements such as Expressionism and Cubism. László Moholy-Nagy, a Hungarian painter and photographer, played a pivotal role in the development of the Bauhaus movement, which emphasized the integration of art, craft, and technology.

During the interwar period, Hungarian painting continued to evolve with the emergence of the Nagybánya artists' colony, which emphasized plein air painting and a return to nature. Artists such as István Szőnyi and Béla Czóbel were associated with this movement. After World War II, Hungarian painting faced challenges under communist rule, with artists often working within the confines of socialist realism. Nevertheless, there were still notable figures who pushed the boundaries of artistic expression. Abstract painting became popular from the 1960s to the 1980s and after a few decades, it shows a growing popularity again as we could see in 2022 when the Hungarian abstract painters were introduced in Seoul as a side event of the FRIEZE art fair.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Hungarian painting has become increasingly diverse, with artists exploring a wide range of styles and themes. Contemporary Hungarian painters like István Sándorfi and István Felsmann continue to garner international acclaim for their innovative approaches to the medium.

One of the upcoming and internationally active artists is Tibor Simon-Mazula, whose solo exhibition takes place at the Hungarian Cultural Center until late June. Simon-Mazula's works are notable for their unique artistic philosophy and distinct artistic vision. His art seeks a delicate balance between reality and surrealism, incorporating deep philosophical thought and rich emotion. This approach renders his artistic experiences even more special and distinct.

Simon-Mazula's artistic oeuvre primarily concerns itself with the exploration of the essence of the human psyche. He expresses the complexities of human experience through a variety of colors, textures, and forms, exploring the boundaries between memory and dreams, consciousness and the subconscious. His works simultaneously express emotional depth while challenging the audience with questions about the meaning and essence of human existence. This approach expands his art beyond mere visual art to an exploration of human experience and thought, eliciting lasting resonance in the audience.

Simon-Mazula has achieved sell-out success for three consecutive years at the Taiwan Art Fair and garnered significant attention when his works were introduced in the Korean market last year. This success serves to demonstrate the extent of the international recognition that his works have achieved.
