[아츠앤컬쳐] 체자르 마키에비치의 곡 ‘므롱고보로 향하는 길’은 1997년부터 컨트리 피크닉의 주제곡이다.

므롱고보는 다양한 축제와 예술 행사를 적극적으로 주최하는 폴란드의 도시다. 이 행사는 도시의 명소이기도 한 초스강 유역의 므롱고보 원형 경기장에서 열린다. 1982년에 시작된 역사 깊은 컨트리 피크닉은 폴란드에서 가장 오래되고 규모가 큰 포크 음악 축제인데, 유럽 전체에서도 큰 규모에 속하며 2024년에도 역시 제43회 므롱고보 컨트리 피크닉이 개최될 예정이다.

처음 두 차례의 컨트리 피크닉은 1982년 8월 23일부터 4일간 옐레니아 구라 지역과 카르파치 지역에서 열렸다. 당시 출연한 외국 스타로는 체코슬로바키아의 미렉 노박과 Greenhorns, 그리고 헝가리의 100 Folk Celsius가 있다. 그리고 이러한 세계적인 게스트의 출연은 컨트리 피크닉의 하이라이트를 장식했다. 므롱고보에서의 축제를 제안한 사람은 폴란드 TV 채널의 감독이었던 즈비셰크 프로쇼프스키이며, 그는 컨트리 음악 홍보로 유명한 음악 비평가와 함께 1983년 1월 말 처음으로 므롱고보 지역 당국을 찾아 이에 대해 논의했다. 이후 위치를 선정하고 군의 도움을 받아 순식간에 원형 경기장을 지었으며 이 덕분에 축제는 1983년부터 초스강 유역에서 꾸준히 자리 잡을 수 있었다.

피크닉을 즐기려는 관광객의 수가 매년 증가하면서 므롱고보는 폴란드와 해외의 컨트리 밴드에게 꿈의 무대로 자리 잡았다. 이곳에서 공연을 선보인 세계 유명 아티스트들도 다시 찾아오고 싶어 하는 곳이 되었다. 므롱고보는 또한 토마시 슈베트, 론스타, 파베우 봉치코프스키, 스트레파 컨트리(의역: 컨트리 존)와 같은 폴란드 유명 밴드 및 컨트리음악가들에게 등용문이 되기도 했다. 미국 가수로는 1986년에는 레이틀레스네크 애니가 처음으로 원형 경기장에서 공연을 선보였고, 그 이후로 조지 해밀턴 4세, 프레디 웰러, 데이비드 앨런, 헤더 마일스, 캐시 마티아가 그 뒤를 이었다. 1995년부터는 ‘도시에서의 피크닉’ 행사를 통해 자동차와 마차 퍼레이드가 함께 열렸고, 이와 관련된 명소들도 함께 등장했다. 축제는 도시에 활기를 불어넣어 므롱고보의 주민들도 점차 행사에 적극적으로 참여하기 시작했다.

4일간의 축제는 페스티벌 원형 경기장, EU 광장 내 작은 원형극장, 요한 바오로 2세 광장, 므롱고보 웨스턴 타운 등 4곳의 특색 있는 무대를 중심으로 펼쳐진다. 일요일에는 모터사이클 참가자들과 그들의 경주 루트를 따라 모인 관객들을 위해 컨트리 퍼레이드가 펼쳐진다. 이 행사를 즐기기 위해 므롱고보를 찾는 수천 명의 관광객들은 서부식 복장을 하고 카우보이 모자를 쓴 채 7월의 마지막 주말 동안 므롱고보에 활기를 불어넣는다.

All roads lead to Mrągowo

Mrągowo stands out among other cities with the number of festivals and artistic events it hosts. The events take place in the urban space and in the famous Mrągowo amphitheatre, beautifully located by Lake Czos. One of the legendary events is the Country Picnic, organised since 1982. It is the oldest and largest country and folk music festival in Poland and one of the largest in Europe. The 43rd Mrągowo Country Picnic will be held in 2024.

The first two editions of the Country Picnic were held in Jelenia Góra and Karpacz from 23-26 August 1982. The foreign stars at that time were Mirek Novák & “Greenhorns” (Czechoslovakia), and “100 Folk Celsius” (Hungary). It was already known back then that international guests are an important element of the Country Picnics. In autumn of 1982, Zbyszek Proszowski, the director of TV Channel 2, was shooting a report in the Masurian region. Upon his return, he met with colleagues from the Country Music Association and suggested organising the next Picnic in Mrągowo. At the turn of January and February 1983, Proszowski, together with Korneliusz Pacuda, a well-known promoter of country music, came to Mrągowo to discuss the festival's organisation with the local authorities. They chose the location, and with the invaluable help of the military, an amphitheatre was built in no time, and since 1983 the Picnic has settled permanently by Lake Czos.

Year by year, the Picnic attracted an increasingly large audience. Country bands from home and abroad wanted to perform on the Mrągowo stage. Many artists were eager to return after their first visit, such as Western Union & Larry Schuba (West Germany), Jim Craig (Scotland), Wilk und Friends (East Germany), Kukuruza (Russia), and others. Polish bands gained wider public recognition through Mrągowo. Performers like Tomasz Szwed, Lonstar, Paweł Bączkowski, and Strefa Country captivated the audience. In 1986, the first American star, Rattlesnake Annie, performed in the amphitheatre. Subsequent acts included George Hamilton IV, Freddy Weller, David Allen, Heather Myles, and Kathy Mattea. Since 1995, a parallel event, “Picnic in the City,” has been organised, featuring concerts, a parade of attractive vehicles, horse-drawn carriages, and many other attractions. The city began to come alive with the festival, and residents started participating in the open events.

Currently, the four-day event revolves around four diverse stages located in the urban space: the Festival Amphitheatre, the small amphitheatre at European Union Square, John Paul II Square, and the Western Town Mrongoville. Additionally, on Sunday, there is a country parade, which is a picnic attraction for both motorised participants and the audience gathered along the route. Annually, thousands of tourists from Poland and abroad come to Mrągowo to take part in this legendary event. It is the guests in western attire and cowboy hats who transform the city's character on the last weekend of July.
